I knew of the pier from stories told to me by old-timers. Recently one of our members, ShoreLady, sent me an article they printed about her family's sporting goods store in Asbury Park. I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about stories of the Asbury Park fishing pier and related stories.
We already have a thread on Asbury, Asbury Park Memories.
I'll link that here, in case anyone wants to stroll down memory lane and see how things used to be....
http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/showthread.php?958-Asbury-Park-memories&highlight=asbury+park+memories
We have another thread on the Long Branch Fishing Pier, in which Finchaser and others have graciously provided many fine memories....
http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/showthread.php?5550-Long-Branch...back-in-time&highlight=long+branch+fishing+pier
I thought this thread could be specifically about the
Asbury Park Fishing Pier(destroyed by a fire in 1944)
the Asbury Fishing club connected with the pier,
and any memories or references to early fishing in that area. :fishing:
Lately I've been a bit tied up with other things and haven't had a chance to post as much. If any of you folks could provide us with some memories or stories on this topic (please remember to post the links if to published content) feel free. Thanks! :HappyWave:

ShoreLady has been gracious enough to provide a little of the history of her family's store, opened by her Great-Grandfather on Cookman Ave.

Here are some additional pics she sent me. I believe that is her Great-Grandfather in the pic above.
Thanks for the chance to show others a glimpse back in NJ's history, ShoreLady. :HappyWave:

When I was younger my grandfather used to talk about fishing the asbury pier. I had no other knowledge of it and had never seen pictures of it. To me it was one of those things the old guys used to talk about that you just couldn't relate to. Thanks for sharing these with us shorelady.

I remember the pier also bababooey. My father would fish there when he was young. They had some nice striped bass and bluefish. They also used to catch ling and whiting there. In essence it was similar to the Long Branch pier, I was told. It was not as big or extensive as the Long Branch one, though. Back then, you didn't need to get out that far, and as the story in the other thread shows, the fish were very abundant.

Some pics I found of the Asbury Park fish pier.

In this last one it looks like it could be the Segers Sporting goods shack that you guys were talking about at the front of the pier, or maybe it isn't?

Wish I could go back in time to fish there. The blitzes must have been awesome.

These pictures are Great! Asbury in its hay-day.
I will be meeting with Bill Finberg (Asbury historian and long time fisherman) sometime in June and he will be sharing some photos and info with me. He will make copies of what he has. He also has a Seger rod. When I get the photos I will share them.

Just going through the old posts and found this. Don't usually travel up that far north but when I do I want to check out the Asbury jetties and will try to reference the places there to this thread. Thanks for sharing the memories fellas.
