No I.D. Yet on Body Recovered in Barnegat Bay Tuesday

State Police waiting for Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office make identification, conduct autopsy

There has been no official identification of the body discovered by a boater in Barnegat Bay off Berkeley Island County Park this morning, a State Police spokesman said.
"We are just waiting at this point," Sgt. Brian Polite said this afternoon.
State Police boats retrieved the body from the bay around 10 a.m. this morning and brought it into Berkeley Island County Park. Authorities believe the body, a male, may be Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicholas Holmes (http://berkeley-nj.patch.com/articles/new-jersey-state-police-coast-guard-focus-search-off-island-beach-state-park), who was ejected from a powerboat into Barnegat Bay early Saturday evening.
The body was discovered about two miles from the northeast corner of Berkeley Island County Park, Polite said.
Ocean County Security Chief Robert Farenga was directing visitors away from the park at the end of Brennan Concourse this morning so authorities could process the scene.
"The island is going to be closed for a little while," he told a man.
Polite wasn't sure if the autopsy would be performed today or tomorrow.
Holmes, 25, was a passenger on a a 23-foot scarab boat near Tices Shoal early Saturday evening when the accident occurred around 6 p.m.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the boat hit the wake of another boat. Four people were on board. Two went into the water, Polite has said.
"It caused the driver to lose control of the boat and in turn ejected the two passengers," he said.
The other man, identified as Michael Cavanaugh, was able to make it back onto the boat. He received minor injuries and was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment.
No charges have been filed, but the accident is still under investigation, Polite said.
A good Samaritan notified the U.S. Coast Guard and State Police earlier this morning after he saw something in the water, Petty Officer Michael Lutz said this morning.
Holmes is a Petty Officer First Class with the Coast Guard. He is an active duty member stationed at Air Station Atlantic City as a machinery technician, according to information released by the Coast Guard yesterday. He had been in the Coast Guard for six years, Lutz said.
