There are a lot of guys here that make fantastic plugs, speedy, surfstix, rip plugger, just ed. I noticed that all of these are made on a lathe. You guys all have great talent. I was searching youtube and wondering if anyone else is making small batches of plugs in a simple style. I found this guy, BmB, and wondered what you experienced guys thought of his work. These look like he cast them or something like that, some kind of plastic? Hardened to withstand abuse, heavy epoxy or etex coating. Any thoughts on this and how he made them, fellas?

Anything works hand carving is a skill or you could clamp down a drill and shape a plug w/sandpaper lathes are good for quick precision work when you want to make multiples of the same plug they make quick work of it.

Nice job rob. Nothing wrong with being thrifty. Looks the same to me. All you have to do is drill and through wire. You can put screw eyes in for smaller fish to start, but if you are going to get into it seriously I would through wire them. Be sure to let us know what it looks like when you're finished. Lots of small bait around now those things should present the flys well.

Thanks BassBuddah- I need to get some tools for through wire- should be the same stuf for plugs. Right now I just put 100# mono through it with beads and swivels. As I get more knowledge I will start learning how to do the through wire. Actually my plan is to build my own and make them more cigar shaped.

the egg feels about 1-1/2 oz. I though the color was for visibility- I will give the eggs a try this weekend. Thanks for all the feedback!

I am scared of using plugs with screw eyes because there is always that fear they will come out with a big bluefish. I think if there was a way to develop a scew eye that expanded as you put it into the body of the plug it might work well. That would be pretty hard to engineer though. Your way or through wiring is definitely better engineered.

Toggle bolts, steve I think that is a good idea in concept but the design of toggles is such that the opening pieces are designed to open in an unencumbered empty space. I thought about what you suggested and they could work if you were willing to take the time and drill out a cavity in the unfinished plug by manipulating the drill at different angles whole keeping the pilot hole relatively small. This could make the cavity big enough to put the toggle in and manipulate it so that it opened and sat against the bottom of the wood. I also thought about how you would make the hook eye. I did find one that could work in theory here is a pic.

The ones in the top left or bottom middle could be used for the purpose you were talking about, with the added step of bending the hook into an eye after inserting the hook when everything is completed. It would have to be made much smaller than the ones I have used in construction. That would be such a pita though. So complicated. to do something like that, through drilling through the center, and using wire, just seems to be less complicated and would guarantee a better balanced plug. As they say balance is everything. Lots of guys out there making unbalanced plugs that don't swim right.

Maybe speedy madcaster or surfstix would have further feedback?

Here is a 2oz custom canal jig with 8/0 Forged Mustad that I powder painted yesterday using a heat gun for the first time. I found the heat gun was much better than my prior experiences of using a propane torch. With the propane torch its hard to get the temperature right...too often I would burn the paint or not get it hot enough the first time.

Tied up a few this morning, zap a gap glue under and during the wrapping process so the hair wont pull out. Put a coat of hard as nails over the wraps for extra durability and will seal the wraps and head with 30min waterproof epoxy for extra durability.

Now all I need is some fish.

Well you know where to get the jig heads...it's not like I haven't offered. I only have about 30 different molds to pick from. :HappyWave:

Pouring lead is no joke, it is very dangerous when done wrong. A few drops of water can empty a 20lb pot of lead. Just search on YouTube for "lead steam explosion".

Definitely spend some time researching the safety aspect of it.

I was at a friends house the other day pouring jig heads, bucktails, and diamond jigs and I caught glimpse of the ugliest bucktail I have ever seen.
I tried to get a picture of it but he quickly grabbed it and threw it in the hot lead pot destroying all the evidence. He claims to have been tying drunk one night :plastered:

The 1.5, 2, 2.5, & 3oz banana jigs with heavy duty hooks will be fished in the deep and fast moving water found in some of the rivers and inlets. I might also try trolling this style head from the kayak when moving from one spot to another.

The lighter diameter "ultra point" hook bucktails are destined to target fluke in the surf. Just add GULP :banghead2:

I wouldn't want to hook a large bass or bluefish on the ultra point hooks but they are perfect for fluke & weakfish.

Tried a few this morning for the first time. Fish were busting out of range so no takers.

Really digging this setup but will probably cut off the swivel as it was meant for a tube tail.

^^^ I don't usually endorse stuff unless I've hung some fish on them, but I have to say that JB is pretty compulsive about how he makes things.......puts a lot of detail and quality into his work.....For example his bucktails are pretty solid and should hold up well to bigger fish....tins might require less work than bucktails......but you can tell when you see em they're a quality product......:thumbsup:

The sizes and prices for now
1.5oz = $4.50
2.1oz = $5.50
2.7oz = $6.50

These prices are for TINS with NO tube or hook, just the stainless steel swivel as shown in the picture. Almost every local tackle shop carries open eye tubes. You choose whatever brand hook, style, size, color tube, bucktail, ect that you want (cost hook + tube is usually about .25-.50).

Remember, TIN is about 12x the cost of lead.

However, when the sand eels show up you can drag these tins through the sand and over the bars and they will only keep getting shinier and shinier. I love the tubes, with a good swivel they give off vibration as they spin in the water.

Sometimes you need extra distance and in that case its good to have a lead one in the bag without the tube.

So I've been doing a bit more wreck/reef fishing the past two weeks and loosing a bunch of jigs every trip.

I tied up a dozen beautiful fluke jigs and I applied the final top coat last night. I set them to spin on my homemade drying wheel.

It looks like I did a poor job of balancing the weight because in the time it took for me to use the bathroom and come back one of the jigs came loose and was banging around on the others as the wheel spun. So I have chartreuse bucktails with white paint on them and white bucktails with chartreuse paint on them and bumpy uneven surfaces. :(

Its not like the fish care what they look like but this candy chartreuse paint job I've been playing with was pretty sick!

It will make donating them to the bottom that much easier ~.~

Don't worry about ones that got a little color mixed in with the others. Or the finished product. Think of the lead part as a delivery system for a teaser above or a trailer or piece of rubber or gulp at the end. The fish are not that picky. If action is slow it is usually because less fish are in that area. Good luck.

Since those bucktails are no longer perfect....they are probably of no use to you....
Once the colors run together and the finish is no longer absolutely smooth....fish just won't want them anymore....:rolleyes:

Sometimes you just get bored with tying the plain old fish catching white bucktail & red thread ultra minnow combo...and what you end up with is a 1.5oz Ultra Minnow in Electric Chicken or as some like to call it now Tutti Frutti.

This was a 4oz Ultra Minnow jig head that had been sitting on my tying bench for well over a year. I absolutely hated the way the pink paint job came out and out of the 5 or so shades of pink bucktails that I had none matched it even remotely. I was showing some friends how to tie bucktails and one of them loved the color so I said what the heck I bet I can make it work.

The end result was a mixture of blue, chartreuse and white hackles along with blue, purple, chartreuse, white, salmon pink, and fluorescent pink bucktails. Its a possibility over the winter, I always said I would sell a few here and there to offset the cost of getting new molds. Most of these molds are not cheap :(
