It's a pretty involved process - but he's been painting and staining with me for many years, so the sanding and staining and varnishing he's got down.
It was a little scary for him when he started drilling holes in the shells to receive the hardware - after spending all his savings on them (over $1000) - but they turned out perfect!
He's so stoked, and enjoyed building them so much, he says he might start building them for other drummers!

:clapping::clapping:That is pretty neat. I don't know a lot about drums but heard that a set like that by a quality maker can go for $2-3000. Is that about right?
So he at least saved himself half of the cost if he bought them at a store. kudos to him for making it happen

Awesome creations Jon. :HappyWave:
How did he bend the wood, had to soak it for awhile?
That must be a nerve-wracking process, hoping nothing will split and it will all come out within the tolerances you need it to be at. I'd say he did a great job and sounds like a helluva drummer.
Congrats to Daniel for putting together such a sweet set! :clapping::clapping:
You must be one proud Dad too.

Thanks guys!
Rich, he bought the unfinished (maple) shells pre-bent and laminated. That's the big expense.
He bought them from the same manufacturer that makes the uber-expensive custom drum sets that the big name pros use.
They are the real deal!
