My friend who I fished with yesterday works in LE. He has his vacation this week and was at the beach fishing when he got the call a little before I met up with him....
I hope they find this scumbag who shot Mike.
IMO the harshest possible justice should be meted out.
If it was up to me, the shooter wouldn't even get a long trial. Proof that he did it would be enough. Then IMO he should be tortured like they do in the Middle East, and then shot so as not to have us taxpayers pay for his incarceration for the next 30 years, at $25k/year.
Animals like this deserve to be exterminated, whether they shoot a cop or an ordinary citizen.....and I hope the shooter has a big enough mouth that he eventually brags that he did this cowardly act.....http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/images/icons/icon13.png

A Newark police detective was shot and killed early Monday morning during an attempted robbery in Paterson, according to officials with the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
Michael Morgan, 32, apparently was outside Sunrise Lounge, a go-go bar near Straight Street and Getty Avenue, when he was shot around 3 a.m. He was transported to St. Joseph's hospital in Paterson, where he died.
John Latoracca, the chief assistant prosecutor in Passaic County, did not mention Morgan by name, but Newark police officials released details identifying the officer.
Latoracca said Morgan and a woman were approached outside the strip club by "a tall, thin black man" who brandished a gun and demanded cash.
It's unclear what happened next because the prosecutor declined to comment on specifics, citing the ongoing investigation. "The officer was shot once in the torso," he said.
The woman, whose name, age and relation to Morgan were not released, was not shot, according to Latoracca.
In Newark, Mayor Cory Booker and Police Director Samuel DeMaio, released a joint statement Monday morning about the officer's murder.
"Our condolences go out to the family of Detective Michael Morgan. Detective Morgan was a proud and courageous servant of our city," Booker said. "His loss is tragic and the circumstances of his death make it all the more painful. Our prayers are with his family and all who knew and loved this great man."
DeMaio said Morgan was a six-and-a-half-year veteran of the force who worked in the special investigations unit at the time of his death.
Derrick Hatcher, president of Newark's Fraternal Order of Police, called Morgan a "good" officer.
"Mike was a helluva good cop," said Hatcher. "(He) had lots of friends in the police department."
As of Monday morning, no suspects had been identified or arrested, according to Latoracca.
The state patrolmen's benevolent association is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
Morgan is the second Newark police officer to be killed this year.
In May, off-duty officer William C. Johnson was gunned down (http://southward.patch.com/articles/newark-police-officer-shot) while apparently ordering pizza at a restaurant in Newark. Johnson, who authorities said was not the target, later died at University Hospital in the city.

$25,000 Reward to Catch Cop Killer
Joe Malinconico
Monday, November 7, 2011 • 7:44am
PATERSON, NJ - Authorities identified the off-duty Newark police officer who was shot and killed during a robbery in Paterson eary Monday morning as Det. Michael Morgan Jr. and said rewards totalling $25,000 have been offered for the capture of his killer.
Morgan was talking with a dancer outside a 2nd Ward go-go bar, the Sunrise Gentlemen's Club at 3:10 am, just after closing time, when the gunman approached them and demanded their money, said Lt. Ron Humphrey. The gunman took cash from the woman and fired one shot that killed Morgan, police said.
Morgan, 32, was armed but it was not clear whether he attempted to stop the robbery or identified himself as a police officer. Officials said there had not been a scuffle between the officer and the victim, despite earlier reports that there had been.
Paterson police were investigating another robbery three blocks away at Getty and Elizabeth Street when they received reports of the shooting, officials said. The Paterson police found the wounded officer and rushed him to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, which is just across the street, where he was pronounced dead. The woman, who some reports identified as a dancer at the club, was unhurt.
Authorities believe the killer had also committed the first robbery, in which his victim was a woman, saying the descriptions of the suspect in the two incidents matched.
Authorities have described the suspect as a tall black male wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie. Brown said the officer was at the strip club with some friends.
Humphrey said detectives are reviewing police security cameras in the area for clues in the case. The State Policemen's Benevolent Association and the Essex County Crimestoppers each has offered a $10,000 reward in the case while the Newark crimestoppers has offered a $5,000 reward.
Morgan was at the strip club with several other Newark police officers celebrating a friend's birthday, police said. At the time of the shooting, the other Newark police officers already had left in their own vehicles, according to Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio. Morgan remained behind, talking to the dancer.
Morgan, a six-year Newark police veteran, was single. He recently had gotten a promotion from Newark's gang and narcotics squad to its special investigations unit - an assignment he was scheduled to begin on Monday, DeMaio said.
Demaio described Morgan as one of Newark's "most productive" officers.
"He was a real, outstanding cop. He had a nose for police work. He was always in good jobs," Jimmy Stewart, vice president of the Newark Fraternal Order of Police said in an interview with nj.com (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/11/newark_police_officer_fatally_1.html). Stewart said the officer was a regular on the FOP bus trips to Washington D.C. every year for police memorials.
Authorities quickly combed the area around the go-go bar looking for the shooter as well as for clues.
The fatal shooting has put Paterson in regional news reports on a day city officials hoped to make headlines for something positive - a press conference featuring the of a an agreement to creat the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park.

Paint his body with battery acid from a paintbrush. Then have him run around the ghetto with dollar bills stapled to his skin. Then, shoot him with one bullet at a time, starting with the legs and arms, working the way to his organs, keeping him alive as long as possible. I would take that job for free.
Sorry to hear that dark, hope they get the bastard.

Update: Paterson Man Arrested Near Philly and Charged with Cop Killing; Police Say His Use of Stolen Credit Card Helped Track Him Down
Joe Malinconico
Wednesday, November 9, 2011 • 3:09pm
PATERSON, NJ – Police arrested 24-year-old Jerome Wright and his girlfriend in a hotel room outside Philadelphia at about 3 am Wednesday morning, almost 48 hours after he allegedly shot and killed an off-duty Newark detective outside a Paterson go-go bar.
Authorities said Wright’s use of a credit card he had stolen from another robbery victim moments before the fatal shooting, along with a tip from a member of the public providing them with Wright’s name, helped them track down the fugitive couple.
A security camera at a Foot Locker in downtown Newark recorded Wright making a purchase late Monday morning using the stolen credit card about eight hours after he allegedly Newark Det. Michaell Morgan Jr. near the corner of Straight Street and Getty Avenue, authorities said.
Wright, who police said lived at various addresses in Paterson and Newark, has been charged with felony murder, armed robbery and weapons offenses. He is being held on $1.5 million bail in Pennsylvania. Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said authorities expect to charge Wright with murder as well. Bail has not been set for Gladson.
Wright’s girlfriend, 19-year-old Nashali Gadson of Newark, faces the same charges. Police would not say whether she was with Wright in his car while he allegedly committed the two armed robberies early Monday morning, including the one that resulted in Morgan’s death.
Morgan’s wake starts on Thursday and authorities said they were grateful to make the arrest before the services began. “To stand there at the funeral and not have someone in custody is a very tough thing for a law enforcement agency,’’ said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
Investigators believe Morgan had reached for his off-duty weapon during the robbery when they say Wright shot him. “He was a very heroic young man,’’ said Paterson Deputy Police Chief William Fraher. “He did not have his life taken from him. He gave it.’’
Fraher said the authorities already had gathered strong evidence in the case: “We are very confident in our ability to get a conviction.’’
Police say Wright’s first robbery happened at about 2:45 am Monday at Getty Avenue and Elizabeth Street when he put his gun to the head of a 32-year-old woman, forced her to lie on the ground and robbed her of her cell phone, credit card and cash.
Valdes said surveillance video showed a man matching the description provided by the victim fleeing in a dark four-door vehicle.
About 20 minutes later, Morgan was escorting a dancer from Sunrise Gentlemen’s Club to her car when a man matching the description from the earlier robbery approached them and demanded their money, police said.
“During the robbery, the assailant, later identified as 24 year old Jerome Wright shot Detective Morgan in the torso, fatally wounding him,’’ Valdes said. “After shooting Detective Morgan, Wright continued to rob the female. He stole her purse, which contained money. Wright also stole the wallet of Detective Morgan, which contained his police identification, before fleeing on foot.’’
Authorities said surveillance video also showed Wright fleeing the scene in the same dark car.
More than 100 law enforcement officers jumped on the case. Detectives caught their first break when the credit card stolen in the first robbery was used at the Newark sneaker store. “Video surveillance showed the purchaser, and he matched the description of the man who robbed the two females and shot Detective Morgan,’’ Valdes said. “The first robbery victim positively identified the male in the Foot Locker video as the man who robbed her earlier that morning at gun point.”
On November 8, authorities released copies of the Foot Looker photo to the media, identifying Wright and another man as “persons of interest” in the investigation. Sometime on November 8, Paterson police “received information from an individual who indicated he/she knew the identity of the killer,’’ Valdes said.
Authorties would not say whether the tipster had seen the publicized video images, or knew Wright’s identity some other way.
Fraher said Paterson residents don’t get enough credit for their willingness to help authorities make their city safer. “They’re law-abiding people and they have a stake in their community,’’ he said.
It was not clear whether the tipster was in line to receive the $25,000 in reward money that had been offered in the case.
At about 3 am on Wednesday, Wright and Gadson were arrested by Paterson police officers and Passaic County prosecutor’s officers in a hotel outside Philadelphia, Valdes said. Authorities have not yet recovered the gun used to kill Morgan, nor have they found the money stolen from the dancer who was with him.
Police say they are stilling putting together details of where Wright and Gadson were between the Foot Locker purchase on Monday and their arrest on Wednesday.
Fraher said police were still looking to question the other man whose photo was released on Tuesday. They said he had been next to Wright in the Foot Locker, but they are not sure whether he was involved in the crime.
“We are not done,’’ Valdes said.
Mayor Jeffrey Jones said Paterson’s police did a “yeoman’s job” on the investigation and said the quick arrest sent a message. “This sort of heinous crime will not go without a swift response,’’ he said.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker called Wright the “manifestation of evil” - a “two-bit criminal” who killed a hero for “chump change.’’ Booker said Morgan’s mother had told him her son as a young boy used to run to window whenever police sirens passed their home.
“It was his calling from his earliest days to serve his neighbors, his community, his brothers, his sisters, to be a law enforcement officer.’’
Booker said Morgan’s mother had recalled mentioning marriage to her son. “Mom, I’m married to the city of Newark,’’ Morgan told her.
Booker praised the cooperation between police in Passaic and Essex counties on the case. “There was no turf issue, no ego,’’ he said.
Valdes said the agencies involved in the case were the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, the Paterson Police Department, the Newark Police Department, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department, New Jersey State Police, the United States Marshals Service, and the City of Philadelphia Police Department.
Wright's Paterson roots were unclear. "Depending on the day, depending on the week, depending on the month, he lived in a different part of Paterson,'' Fraher said.

It is sickening to see what people like this get away with. I read another news report that said he was out on parole and should not have been. It is time to stop coddling the criminal and make the sentencing harsh, so they don't do it again. Or kill them outright, anytime a murder is committed. Condolences to the family.
