Head Protection on the Rocks? - jetties and inlets.....

A little late, but thought I would throw this one in (and yay for my first post). Fished Sat am (2/4) from 545am to 10am. Still learning my way around MoCo and trip was a lot of just that. ***. Threw everything I have in the bag with no takers. Like I said - still very much learning the ropes up here. Coming from Maryland, the land of conventional reels and bait dunking, this pluggin' thing is taking some time. Still really enjoyable and how can you complain about a 45* day in Feb where you have a legit shot at a fish?

While out there early, I got to thinking. With the nature of trips this time of year being what they are, cold water and even colder air temps, slick rocks and often being out there solo, I was wondering if anyone out there is wearing helmets in the dark conditions. I am perfectly ok wearing my inflatable PFD under my shell, but is a helmet taking it too far? They are cheap ($50 for a good one on sale), offer insulation and can save a life. Does anyone here have a perspective they want to share?

Got skunked last night as well, don't feel bad xtreme that's why they call it fishing not catching.
mbo1971 welcome to the site. I never wore a helmet but have seen quite a few people fall out there. I might feel goofy wearing one, otherwise I think it's a good idea.

Jettys aren't for me, I don't do them but I guess helmets would be a great idea for lots of guys out there based on reading all the wacky stories. Also if you are going to be out there at night a pillow may also be very handy (read here that some one took a little nap one night recently on a jetty). Mind as well be comfy. :HappyWave:

As for the helmet thing. I know a lot of guys think it might look gay, or stupid..I can definitely relate to not wanting to look stupid out there...but if ya know me you should know that with the stories circulating about my stinkin waders and sleeping in my car to get "two bites out of one trip"...
that it doesn't really bother me what people think of me...(other than the close friends I have, and Pebbles),,,,I have always marched to the beat of a different drummer, and sometimes it seems I'm the only one who's hearing the music...so I encourage all opinions here, don't hold back.,...but I also think it's time for a thread where we discuss this further...feel free to jump in and again, honesty is important here.....if you don't agree, that's a valid point and deserves to be heard...but please tell us why, as well....thanks for reading, folks!

MBO's notion was so different to the way most of us think, that I thought it should be a separate discussion.
There's no right or wrong answer here, and I realize that people may make fun of MBO for bringing this idea up for discussion...that's OK, he's a big boy, I think he can handle it....:)

I thought he had some compelling ideas for bringing up this discussion...,maybe he'll go into more detail when he gets a chance....

How could a 100 guys on a jetty look any stupider.

There was a mariachi band on a jetty last year (I saw a pic (LOL)).

Say there are a hundred guys out on a jetty, how many of those do you think really know what they are doing?

^ Ouch that's a crazy picture! I don't fish the jetties a lot but I have fished inlets. The fronts can be a scary place. I think helmets might be beneficial but would probably not wear one because of the intimidation factor.

I remember back in the day being with girls who I needed to wear 2 helmets and also 2 bags over their head. Yeah I was pretty desperate in my teens when I didn't have a good job and a lot of money to impress a girl with.:laugh:
As for the helmet issue, I think it would be smart but I don't think it will catch on as being out there on the jetties has a macho connotation or image. I think wearing a helmet might ruin that for some guys so that is why they won't do it.

Yeah like the others said it might be a good idea but I would never wear one.
Example, try to go to Montauk and put a helmet on. They would laugh you off the beach.

Last year in MTK under the light i got drilled in the chest by a wave & bashed into the rocks.
Zeno was filming as my Supersurf rod had the first 2 top guides smashed. As we walked back to the parking lot to hand my rod off to Paco from Lami for repairs, I realized this situation called for a helmet. Zeno told me of a surfcaster who fished big water with a football helmet complete with facemask. No one laughs at him! later on i saw another fisherman wearing a hockey helmet. No one was laughing at him either.

If you feel you need a helmet then wear one.
Better safe than sorry.
