PERTH AMBOY — A 50-year-old New Brunswick man drowned Saturday evening after a pleasure craft that he and four others were aboard capsized near Perth Amboy, authorities said this morning.

Mario Baredales, a resident of Livingston Avenue, died and the four other boaters — three males and one female — were treated at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy and released, according to the New York Police Department.
The NYPD Harbor Unit is conducting an investigation of the incident. However, a police source said initially it appears the boat may have capsized after the anchor got caught.

"It appears to be just that — a tragic accident where the boat had run aground and taken on water. As a result it capsized," an NYPD police source said.
The four survivors had only minor injuries and authorities did not know the relationship between the boaters. Their identities were not immediately available.
At about 5:40 p.m. Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report of a pleasure craft sinking off the coast of Staten Island with several people in the water.

Another pleasure craft rescued the five boaters and several private vessels converged in the area to help with the rescue, according to Coast Guard Lt. Jason Mortz. The Coast Guard from the Sandy Hook station escorted the boaters to a marina in Perth Amboy, Mortz said.
