WORK TO BEGIN ON REMOVAL OF SECOND OF THREE DAMS FROM RARITAN RIVER

TRENTON - On Monday, July 23, removal of the second and largest of three dams from the Raritan River in Somerset County is scheduled to begin.
The elimination of the Roberts Street Dam will further increase water flow and habitat improvements realized from removal of the Calco Dam in Bridgewater last summer.

The dam removal project is being done and financed by the Coastal Eagle Point Company, formerly owned by El Paso Corp., under the terms of a landmark agreement secured last year by the DEP as compensation to the public for harm to natural resources caused by past pollution at a refinery that was operated by or affiliated with El Paso.

Work crews will have their equipment in the river Monday morning as they tear down the old dam and begin the process of the restoring the channel to its original state.
