East Rutherford man struck by lightning in Long Branch diesPublished: Thursday, August 16, 2012, 3:33 PMLONG BRANCH (http://nj.com/long-branch) — The East Rutherford man struck by lightning during a fishing trip with his son on Wednesday died this afternoon, police said.
Lt. Frank Morey of the Long Branch Police Department said that Sebastian Castillo was pronounced dead by doctors at Monmouth Medical Center at 1:32 p.m.
Castillo had been fishing with his 10-year-old son at Takanassee Lake Beach Wednesday when he was struck as violent storms passed through the area (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/08/man_struck_by_lightning_while.html) just after 5 p.m. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit until he succumbed to injuries sustained in the strike this afternoon.
Castillo's son was not injured by the lightning strike, police said.

This is the 2nd time in a few weeks someone has gotten struck and killed by lightning in NJ. I remember when the fisherman was killed by lightning at Sandy Hook a few years ago. I think I was there that day but a lot earlier in the AM.

Lightning is dangerous because it is so unpredictable. If you're out there and the lightning starts, if you're at a high contact point or carrying something like a fishing rod, which is a conductor, there is a valid chance you could be hit.

I remember several years ago being caught in a lightning storm while fishing at Sandy Hook at night. The fishing was good, I was catching bass in the teens, and I foolishly refused to leave because I was catching fish, and didn't want to maKe the long walk back to my truck. :kooky: :beatin:

When the thunder and lightning came, I got a little scared and laid down on the beach (away from my rods) in a fetal position, hoping it wouldn't hit me. Actually, if you think about it, it was a relatively safe position because at that point I was closest to the ground.

However, there are no guarantees it won't hit you if you are outside during a storm.
Please be safe out there folks, and think about how the lives of your loved ones would change forever if you didn't return from a trip.

I think I saw him there with his son a few days before that too. It was iffy so I didn't go out. Be safe out there. RIP
