Whales in NJ.....

LONG BRANCH — An endangered Fin whale has washed up dead on the beach in Seven Presidents' Park, park officials said today.
The whale, which is about 40 feet long, was found by rangers upon opening the park this morning, said Senior Park Manager Mark Borchert.

Borchert said experts from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine were on the scene awaiting the arrival of equipment that will help them stabilize the mammal, which is currently rolling in the surf.

He said individuals from the Stranding Center will then conduct a necropsy on site to try to determine the cause of the whale's death.

Sheila Dean of the Stranding Center said the Center currently had little information, but said that the whale was significantly decomposed when it was found.

She encouraged Jersey Shore residents to visit the Center's Web site -- www.marinemammalstrandingcenter.org (http://www.marinemammalstrandingcenter.org/) -- where they can learn more about strandings and what to do if they find an animal in distress.



A Fish and Wildlife representative said they might be closing the beach in that area for swimmers because they are worried that the oils and scents from the decaying whale may attract sharks for miles around. I'd stay away from that area if you are planning a trip to the beach with the family.

A humpback whale has become entangled in fishing gear about eight miles offshore in New York waters, the Coast Guard said on Wednesday. Until the team from Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (http://www.coastalstudies.org/) in New England arrives at the spot, near Sandy Hook, N.J., on Thursday, the Coast Guard has established a 500-yard safety zone (http://www.uscgnewyork.com/go/doc/802/256436/) around the stranded whale, which it announced via Twitter (http://twitter.com/USCGNewYorkCity).

NEW YORK - The Coast Guard is enforcing a 500-yard safety zone around a humpback whale entangled in a lobster pot and netting eight miles east of Sandy Hook near the approach to Ambrose Channel Feb. 25, 2009.
The Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) vessel are on scene. The whale is reportedly visible on the surface and breathing.

An entanglement team from Center Coastal Studies based in Glouchester, Mass., is scheduled to arrive tomorrow to cut the whale free.
"We are ensuring the safety of both the animal and boaters," said Lt. j.g. Eric Hanson, Coast Guard Sector New York's command duty officer. "Coast Guard Sector New York is issuing safety marine broadcasts hourly on VHF channel 16 and will be working closely with the NOAA and other agencies to assist."

A three-member rescue crew cut away fishing line and other gear that had snagged the humpback whale that had been tangled in lobster netting and fishing line since Wednesday.

Rescuers say it suffered injuries to its back and tail, but managed to swim off on its own.

Federal wildlife officials were aided by a Massachusetts marine studies group in cutting the whale free Thursday.

The 25- to 30-foot whale had been snagged in gear about eight miles off Sandy Hook.

MONMOUTH BEACH — A dead humpback whale washed up on the beach here.


However, because of the tide and the inopportune location, authorities cannot immediately perform a necropsy to find out more about the whale and why it died, said Jay Pagel, senior field technician for the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine.
"There's not much we can do about it until tomorrow," Pagel said Monday.
Until then, beachgoers should remain at least 100 yards away from the humpback whale, an endangered species protected under federal law, he said.
"We don't want people touching it or messing with it," Pagel said.
A whale on the beach is not uncommon, he added. Dead whales visit the Jersey shore a couple of times a year.

Ijust read it now. I guess once they come up on the beach, it's possible for them to get a lot of damage to their internal organs. Or it could probably have been very sick already, otherwise why would it end up on the beach in the first place?

I read about that, what a shame. I know a guy who was in the navy. He claims the reason that there are so many unexplained strandings is that the navy does a lot of sonar testing, and it's classified. When you have a bunch of mammals like that who end up being stranded, it could be a virus in ther body, sure. It could also be something that messed with their sonar, causing them to become disoriented. That's why when they are released, they frequently end up back on the beach. I can't prove any of this, but I thought it was an interesting theory.

LINDEN -- A rescue attempt is being planned for Ilya, a Florida manatee stuck near an oil refinery in New Jersey where plunging temperatures and a lack of food are endangering his life.
The gentle sea cow has been known to marine scientists for 10 years as he made his way up and down the East Coast. He has recently been spotted in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maryland.

But today he was huddling near an outfall pipe at an oil refinery in Linden, the only place he could find warm water.

Wildlife Officials Say Manatee Hanging Around NJ Has Disappeared

That "lost" manatee off the coast of North Jersey is really lost now. Wildlife officials says the sea cow has disappeared and may be headed south on its own.

We get a lot of manatees in this area each summer -- they travel up the east coast and usually get back to Florida before it gets cold.
But Chuck Underwood, with the US Fish and Wildlife Service office in Jacksonville, Fla., says that wildlife agencies all along the east coast have been alerted about the missing manatee, last seen in a tributary in northern New Jersey last Friday (see related story (http://www.kyw1060.com/pages/5458572.php?)).

It's now hoped that the manatee is on its way south on its own, but Underwood says they don't want to take the chance that it hasn't gotten lost again.

Underwood says anyone who thinks they see the manatee should call their nearest wildlife agency:
"The big thing we would ask people to do is, while we do have plans in place to rescue the animal, we ask you only to report the animal's location. Don't try to do anything to corral the animal or track the animal in any way -- just report the sighting."
In South Jersey, the number to call would be that of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center: 609-266-0538.

I read that some humpback whales have been spotted in Asbuy yesterday. For the last month they have been sighted. If you have nothing to do with the family a ride to check it out may be in order.

There were off of Asbury all last week. I think it was last Thursday, I just watched the two of them feed and feed. The ocean looked like it had a paved road going through it from Allenhurst to Asbury as the nervous bunker got tighter and tighter. It was one of those days I will never forget.
So much for even wetting a line that day.
Haven't seen them this week, but the amount of bunker has not been what it was last week.

Why stop at that, we could have "watch boats" to monitor their bunker intake. Any whales caught gorging more than their RDBA "Recommended Daily Bunker Allowance" would be electroshocked to cough up the extra. There are plenty of out of work people who could use a job as a whale monitor.

Blame it on the whales that there are less striped bass, hot diggety. ;) :HappyWave:

How terrible. Why do whales or other animals beach themselves anyhow?

There are endless possible reasons., Pebbles. They could have a malfunction with their sonar. It has been said that in the area of the Earle Pier they sometimes test new sonar ops for the submarines. This could affect them too. Some times they are hit at sea by the prop of a ship. This may not be enough to cut them but can cause internal injuries. Then, they make their way to shallow water and die, or die and then wash up. Yes it is sad to see this happen, but it is part of nature.

Next the save the bunker people will want the 2 whales feeding on the bunker off of Bayhead killed to save there precious bunker. There are bunker from Delaware to LI some places miles wide. The bass could never consume that many. As the dwindling schools of bass spread out the I can only get a bass snagging crew which are mostly clueless say there are no bass because they are starving,not that they are being wiped out again by there efforts.

They killed all the foxes and some other predators at Hatteras to protect the plovers. Check it out, it's true. And the fishermen are barely allowed there now. So if the whales are eating the bunker, following this logic it makes perfect sense. Kill all the whales, seals, and thresher sharks that eat bunker. It's a valuable resource. Can't have it eaten by anything other than a striped bass.:rolleyes:

We really have had an exciting year for whale watchers in NJ. Generally they come in close to feed on the bunker.


That's nothing new...







Back when Finchaser and some of the other old-timers here used to fish the Long Branch Fishing Pier, whales used to come in close in the Winter to feed on the whiting....

Some great stories then (I think I remember one of the old-timers relating a story where someone hooked a whale by accident off that LB pier...:scared:)...as well as now....

Hi Everyone,

Susan and I would like to share the following photos with you of 2 Humpback Whales we saw and photographed off of LBI on Sunday. Each one was well over 40 feet long and dwarfed our boat. We were lucky enough to get the most amazing photos with the LBI Brant Beach Tower in the background. Photos include the whales within 50 feet of the beach and breaching through schools of bunker.

· Photo 0020; Whale near the beach with a school of Dolphin
· Photo 0037 Bunker scattering and airborne to get away from danger below (this alerted us to a possible breach)
· Photo 0039 Humpback open mouth appears from below the water
· Photo Brant Beach Tower: Mouth full of fish and you can clearly see the whales tongue and the Brant Beach Water Tower is in the background.
· Photo Dual Breach: Final Leap as they traveled back out to deeper water (about 1 mile off shore) through a school of bunker (you can see the bunker in the air next to the 2 whales as they breach)

This was truly one of the most spectacular things we have ever seen in our lives! We understand these photos will be in the Asbury Park Press on Tuesday.

The other morning I was fishing one beach at sunup....it was foggy and overcast....
I thought in the distance I saw a drunk guy sleeping it off after drinking too much the night before..

It was hard to see shapes in the fog....eventually realized it was a seal...pretty damn big one too....size of a guy....
I saw it move laterally along the beach.....Eventually a fishermen came along and it shuffled back into the water...

Pretty cool to see...
but I could see how fishermen get upset when there are a lot of them....friends in MA rant about them all the time....
It's part of the cycle of Nature....all creatures gotta eat and have their place....:cool:

They say there are now a lot of bunker boats scooping up the bunker. I wonder if that has had an affect on the number of whales in close. Has anyone seen whales out front lately?

This could be just me thinking these crazy thoughts but I don't think whales like the dirty water out front right now. It has also gotten a little colder dropped maybe 4 degrees. I don't think they are that sensitive to the temperature though. I think it is more the dirty water that they do not like. Come to think of it that may be true for thresher sharks as well. Haven't heard marina talk of many being taken this year inshore either. By this time of the year there is usually a good number of them to be had within 1-3 miles.
