First, I talked to Dark today, he is fine, still has no power.
Second, thanks to all who posted the pictures of the results of the hurricane. We all live in our own little world, and those pictures/videos exposed the suffering outside of it. Beach replenishment will never defeat nature. Nature has a mind if its’ own, has no boundaries, and does as it pleases. My heart aches for the destruction caused along the coast. The mega rich will rebuild, but the average Joe, I don’t know if he will be able to rebound from the devastation and mental anguish caused by Sandy. My prayers go out to them, to give them strength and patience.
Third, my own selfish reasons- of walks/casting along some of those beaches on a calm fall day, years past, admiring the serenity and peacefulness, enjoying it to the fullness. Sometimes envying those who had the ocean right outside their door. The landscape will change, but the ocean will always remain a salvation for my head.

The pics and videos on this thread put the storm in perspective.
It is impossible to imagine anything this bad, but it happened. I am still stunned.
Thanks for posting (sharkhart great work as usual).

Thanks to all who have posted.....and if you still want to share pics, at any time, please don't feel yours are trivial, or not as "important" as the others you may have seen.....
We are not professional photographers, so you shouldn't expect that of yourselves either....
Anything that chronicles your experiences, is important.,........
Right after the storm, Pebbles and I spent 2 days in some of the worst areas, helping some folks who really needed it.
The devastation I saw still puts a lump in my throat when I think about it. :(
I felt the need to document. She stopped me, saying that the pics I wanted to take would be in invasion of privacy, and that the people who lost the most, still deserved dignity instead of having someone gawking at them with a camera.
Of course, as usual, she made a very valid point.
I wouldn't want someone posting pics of me and our family if we lost everything.
However, sometimes that is what is needed to get the point across, to others, who may not be aware of the devastation.
When we look for volunteers for a cause, you try to motivate that person to volunteer on a personal level....in a sense you want to reach their hearts, so they feel compelled to volunteer, or help in some way.....
IMO that's what pics and videos like this do....they help people to realize the damage, on a much more personal level......
At some point we must move on, forge ahead, but the pics are a valuable asset to motivate more people to get involved sometimes........
So if any of you other members have stories you want to share, pics to post, or links to videos, please post them.
Pebbles and I both had no idea of the damage, until we went down to some of these areas.....
You drive the Parkway and Turnpike now, even after the storm, and would have no clue as to the devastation just a few miles closer to the water......
In the last 2 weeks I have heard some of the saddest stories, enough to remember for a lifetime......
People I know, and family, from all along these coastal areas, different states, who have lost some material possessions, and some who have lost everything....
Beyond the obvious material damage, I have heard the stories that are heartbreaking, human loss and drownings.....
My sincerest condolences go out to all who have lost a loved one in this storm of a Century.....
Those feelings will diminish for some I know, but the sense of loss will never go away for others....
and I have tears in my eyes as I type this post......http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/images/icons/icon9.png
Thanks, all...... :HappyWave:

I want to talk time out for some special recognition for the posts by Fin and SharkHart.......Fin has not been hit as hard as others, but he has still suffered through no power........some of his friends have lost everything....we saw the damage first hand as he was kind enough to drive us around for a very sobering tour.....
SharkHart, your video, as others have mentioned, was compelling.....thank you for something that brings emotion to the top for me, every time I view it....:clapping: Going forward, for 2013 a goal I have is to start writing more, and I think it's time for you to bring your talents to the next level as well......so you know I will be harassing ya about it....be prepared...... :HappyWave:
***************
I will be repeating this throughout my posts....
There are still folks out there who will need help going forward....
Even though some have insurance, some are under insured, and that insurance check, if it comes, will not begin to cover their rebuilding.
Some will move, but please try not to fault those who stay and are determined to rebuild.....for some it is the home they have had for decades. Many thought they were prepared, but no one was truly prepared for a storm of this historic magnitude......
So if you can volunteer, and have a strong back and 2 good hands, please consider doing that......a lot of raw manpower is still needed to help folks get back on their feet again........
It will help some people, more than you could ever imagine......:learn:

"Perfect moment each summer.....
On paper it doesn't make any sense......in our hearts we know it does..."
One of the things about video and images/pictures, but video particularly, is its ability to hit us in our hearts, to get into our psyches, to get us involved in caring for things that we may not have knowledge of.........
I found this to be a hard-hitting, but positive and hopeful, short documentary by Bill Donahue........

It has been nearly four months since the storm commonly known as Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey’s shoreline. And even though Sandy was not, in fact, a hurricane by the time it ripped into the Jersey Shore, the damage it caused was widespread and severe.
Some beaches and roads remain closed, and many residents will never recover their losses. I took a ride through some of the hardest hit areas last weekend with Walter LaCicero, the Mayor of Lavallette, who said time and time again, “There used to be a house there.” Here, some photos from our trip.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Collapsed-House-Ortley.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Collapsed-House-Ortley.jpg)
A house in Ortley Beach.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Collapsed-House-Ortley-Beach.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Collapsed-House-Ortley-Beach.jpg)
Houses in Lavallette. “Compared to some places, we made out pretty good,” says Mayor LaCicero, whose own house was minimally damaged.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-House-In-Water.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-House-In-Water.jpg)
A house in the water in Mantoloking. Photo taken from the Mantoloking Bridge. A major stretch of Route 35 near here was closed until February 1st.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Ortley-Beach-Fire-Siding.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Ortley-Beach-Fire-Siding.jpg)
These homes are on the beach in an area known as Camp Osborn in Brick. Multiple fires erupted here due to gas explosions. “It was like the Kuwait oil fields,” says the Mayor. “Fires everywhere.” The rippling in the siding of the brown house was caused by the heat of the fire.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Small-Belmar-Ocean-Ave-Closed.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Small-Belmar-Ocean-Ave-Closed.jpg)
Ocean Avenue in Belmar is still closed.

The sights in Manasquan are eerie. It’s virtually deserted, and some of the homes–like this one–are marked with an “X,” while others are marked with a slash. By the look of things, I’m guessing an X is worse.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Lavallette-House-on-Stilts.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Lavallette-House-on-Stilts.jpg)
Thousands of homes at the Jersey Shore will have to be lifted thanks to new federal regulations.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Ortley-Beach-Dead-End.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Ortley-Beach-Dead-End.jpg)
A dead end at Route 35 and 9th Avenue in Ortley Beach.

Don’t worry, the Jersey Shore house (yes, as in Snooki) is still standing in Seaside Heights.

The Beachcomber in Seaside Heights is operational. But there’s no draft beer, since the beer box is on the lower level. “It was the bar’s one main casualty,” explained the bartender.
http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Seaside-Heights-Outside-Beachcomber.jpg (http://blogs.phillymag.com/the_philly_post/files/2013/02/Sandy-Smaller-Seaside-Heights-Outside-Beachcomber.jpg)

Sorry that's a bummer. I guess we tend to forget how bad it was. You go to the main areas of the shore and everything is nice and pretty again. We forget that those who live 2 miles away may still be waiting for permits to rebuild. It is not so nice and pretty once you get away from the brand new stores and houses on the boardwalks.

You said it. There are also people who tried to scam and said the houses were their main house when they were vacation houses. I heard of one guy, friend of a friend, who got 60k from them for rehab and he wasn't supposed to. They are coming after him and he has to pay it back. Actually I hope he gets jail time.
