Capt. Frank Rose, one of the last of the "hard-fishing, hard-living" Jersey Shore charter fishing pioneers passed away at 72 this morning after a long bout with leukemia. Mary and Duncan Shaw said he was born in Perth Amboy, and also lived in Clifton (where he had a painting business) before moving to Brick. Rose was best known as skipper of Miss Diane, a 44-foot Henriques that was sailing from Clarks Landing Marina in Point Pleasant when I moved my boat there from Montauk. Capt. Barry Goldman said Rose actually started fishing out of Highlands with a 31 Bertram before moving his boat to Belmar. After along time at Clarks, Rose moved to Southside Marina in Point Pleasant where he also ran the party boat Southside Princess for awhile.

Capt. Pete Grimbalis of Reef Rescue called Rose " The best bottom fisherman I've ever known." Another great bottom fisherman, the late Mickey Vassallo, was a good friend, and I had the privelege of fishing with them one day on a fall fun trip aboard Miss Diane to a "secret" wreck 42 miles south of the inlet. This was before GPS, and we heard one of the loran stations was going down in a half-hour just before we got to the numbers -- -- barely dropping a bouy over the wreck before losing the signal. Then young captains Paul Regula and Mike Petrole were among those aboard as we didn't find many of the expected jumbo sea bass but did catch some large cod that were rare at the time.

Dennis Pelligrino, who often mated for Rose over the years, noted that Frank lived life his way and had no regrets. Regula said there were always lots of laughs when fishing with Rose. I trust that heaven will be livlier place with Rose and Vassallo trying to prove which one is the better blackfisherman. A memorial will be arranged in the near future.

I regret I never had the chance to meet him. Fin and some of the old-timers have talked about him. My deepest thoughts and condolences to his family and friends. RIP Capt Frank. :(
