Got some nice fish to 26lbs the past few nights in the back bays. All on metal lips. All released. all about the bunker. They are thinning out now and I don't see the bite continuing at the level it was. One can always hope, though.

We got some bass and fluke in montauk this weekend. It was mostly centered around the 5-7 and 7-9pm times. The rest of the time we went fluking. All boat fish to 23lbs on diamond jigs. From what the capts at the dock were saying it has just heated up.
It was also very crowded. Trailered the boat there. Would probably not make that trip during a holiday weekend again.

Fished near breezy last night near high tide. bucktail and gulp caught 3 small blues 2 fluke and one monster stargazer. Wondering about the stargazer if anyone was brave enough to eat one of those suckers.

Fished from the pink hotel East to off of Fire Island this morning. 50" of water. Managed 2 keeper fliuke on gulp and 6-8 oz jigs, quite a few throwbacks. Tide was ripping. Best bite was the last hour before high tide. Switched to c-bass after that and managed a few. Nice morning on the water, not too much traffic. Strong mood tide made it tough.

7dp you can eat them, cut the head off and bake whole or on the grill, or fillet them and cook with oregano, garlic and spices in a pan. They are quite tasty if you can get past the ugly head.

Fished out east last night. Figured with the pending bad weather the fishing would be good. It may get better but the tides were bad, Fished from the bottom and 3 1/2 hours of the incoming before I had to leave. Managed a few blues to 8lbs on darters and one short bass.

Thanks for the report BB. All summer the montauk head boats claim they are crusing them. And hardly anything in the surf. whats up with that?

Played hookey today and went on a friends boat. We fished off the Rockaways and got into some decent sized bluefish to 15lbs. Ava 27 and gold hammered jigs worked the best.

Rockhopper it seems by me things have been slow this summer. I can't speak for Montauk but would think that Sandy has had some lasting affects on the fishing this year. There are hardly any spearing around in the bays while every year in the past you could count on them.

took the ride to mecca yesterday. Set up W of the Point for the incoming, Was perfect conditions with some bait showing small white bait. Fished from 4-9 and it was terrible just a few cocktail blues. Didn't see anyone else do much beyond that. Talked to 10 guys on the way out with the same results.
Here is a report I found on the net. This is the same as my results there this year. At Paulies they talked about some fish to 40# but the real deal is most of them are coming from the charters.
"Fished the beach around the Mtk lighthouse with plugs and bucktails Thursday morning from first light till 4:00pm with only a one hour break for breakfast. Nada. Not one fish, but My friend Lee caught a schoolie on a bucktail. Anyway, Not a very good bite on the beach out in Mtk right now, but we'll see what happens after this front that just came thorugh last night."

Your welcome hookset its still sucky up there. I posted a report in the other thread from a guy who went there. Some schoolies and small blues from the surf thats it. I can do the same thing by not traveling so far and just fishing the south shore. Right now montauk is a waste of money.
My report I fished the ss tonight from 5-7. There were some weeds but the surf was not that bad, Managed 2 schoolies on buck and pork. Did a lot of walking.

Nice going pete I agree with you on the montauk assessment. I haven't posted montauk reports but have been there 3 times since sept 1 and had similar results. My biggest bass was 30". The night I got that it was the only fish I caught. On a beachmaster.

The work is not worth the effort in the surf right now on the Island for me,the fish are too far off not much bait around to kick things in gear.Montauk is slow from what I heard I'm sure the fish are there but the night shift under the light is probably the ticket. They are in the rips(fact) so the boat is the way to go if you want to catch.(diamond jigging) JMO..

Nice job surfstix. With the east wind conditions I drove to montauk this afternoon. Picked up 2 bass around 29" on bucktail. As sunset came I started throwing a black needlefish. I got slammed by my biggest fish of the year so far. Pulled drag for about 15 seconds before I could get a handle on her. She broke me off on the rocks and broke my heart. Well there is always next time. Tight lines.

I've been west of Montauk Nitestrikes(SP) still hit or miss but the early shift seems to be the ticket this week so far didn't weigh the others just the one for dinner Steve if I had to guess about 20 lbs. they are loaded up with sandeels.

Had the same issues this am, Fished the western ss for an hour. Threw small tin, lots of weeds. Got one 23" striper when I first got there, nuttin but weeds after that. Great going on the 36 inchers surfstix must have been fun.

Yeah it was a rare good day.3 legal fish is always a good day stayed away from the crowd that day the bigger fish seem to be isolated from the rest of the pack.

Its winding down here is capt gene's report. Montauk sportfishing.com
The rat patrol is in full effect lol.
If it?s not over, it?s pretty damn close to it. Very few boats are getting out for a half day trip anymore, and the phones aren?t exactly ringing off the hook. And the stripers are getting smaller. Most of the fish caught Saturday were in the 20? range, no where near enough to be someones dinner. I guess that?s a good sign for the future, but for now it sucks. And, in order to get any of them, the few boats that were out had to travel down to between Caswells and Ditch Plains.

I heard the same from Montauk all rats.Further west rats with a occasional 32"-33" here and there, seems to be some shad still around.Rough season some small fish are a good sign there should be more though but that's what happens when more & more people fish and less fish can reproduce no supply too much demand.

I fished a popular beach this morning central ss. There were some fish caught, I got 2 to 27". Tin with green tail. Some others caught there but it seems like its winding down. I think you're right in calling it surfstix it was good for a while now it seems to be losing steam

same for me, fished the south shore from 4-8. It was beautiful seems the fish didn't get the memo. One runt 22" on tin. The fat lady she is singing.

I took a jig and teaser and went to RM all rats.Stayed for about a half hour 6 shorts all the other stuff is cleaned and put away if I get a whim I run to the beach and throw some casts but the boats are slowing down also so looks like the fat lady is warming up,you can catch a ton of shorts if that's your thing they are real tight to the beach yesterday they wanted a dead slow retrieve water is getting colder shad still around fish are not big enough to eat them.Taking my last boat trip today then that's it.

Although I usually don't fish death rat season I went this a.m. for some sanity just grabbed a teaser and Diamond jig and had a pretty good morning w/micro bass they were hitting so close to shore I missed many hits in exchange for a jig in the face when setting the hook.SW wind the tide just changed to incoming & I found a deep water cut on the inner bar and they were just laying there.None bigger then approximately 12-18 inches not very fat either so i guess the food source is getting scarce.

Nice going SS. I fished jones this morning and saw fish the same size. Landed 4 on teaser and tin with green tail. These fish are small. Did see one guy walking off with a 32 incher but no other big ones like that. fat lady will be singing soon.

Yeah Pete if there are any bigger fish around they would be over that way I generally don't fish Jones mainly from Sorethumb/Demo to Shinnecock or is that central/eastern SS reports.
