I never met him but from all accounts I have heard he was a helluva nice guy. Cancer is a debilitating disease. Some family members and friends have had it and beat it, most haven't. It can change who you are and your will to live. You start out fighting but I have seen the sad side where folks just give up.
Some of my worst memories are when it strikes young children.

My deepest thoughts and condolences to the family of Ron Z Poirier.
