Captain Tom Rostron Jr. and Clint Simek of New Jersey were understandably overwhelmed when a 303-pound mako shark lept into their sport fishing boat, the TNT.

As reported by the Ashbury Park Press, the two were shark fishing 30-miles east of the Manasquan Inlet when they saw a large fin circling their bait and attacking the floating balloon attached to the bait 30-feet below the surface. Rostron explained what happened next, “We look up and the balloon is coming at us like a scene out of, ‘Jaws.’ I mean, and I look up and the thing just does a 15-foot summersault right out of the, he just flew out of the water.” Mako sharks, whose numbers are in decline, are known for their leaps out of water and on this shark’s fifth jump, Rostron said, “It just went crazy. He landed on the gunnel of the boat, flipped in and just started wrecking everything.”

The shark began biting through seat cushions, fiberglass decking, and even the scrub brushes the men used to defend themselves. The men were scared for their lives with the captain saying, “There’s fear he’s going to kill you ’cause his teeth are chewing everything in the boat.” The two used ropes and gaff to prevent the fish from biting them, and eventually were able to subdue the 8-foot-4-inch long mako.

The TNT sustained $5000 in damage and Rostron and Simek felt fortunate that they did not suffer any injuries during the ordeal.
