SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ (CBS) – The pier and surrounding condos are now being evacuated as firefighters battle a large blaze on the boardwalk in Seaside Park, NJ.
The fire reportedly started at the Kohr Brothers at 1800 Boardwalk on the FunTown Amusement Pier around 2:15 p.m. It quickly reached five alarms before jumping to six shortly before 4 p.m.

MUST WATCH: Chopper 3 Over 6-Alarm Fire On Seaside Park BoardwalkAs of 3:20 p.m., explosions had been reported within the building and multiple units were being called in to the scene. A large plume of black smoke was visible in the sky over much of the boardwalk looking north towards the pier.
letting adequate water and with flying embers spreading the fire due to winds in the area. Some embers had blown as many as four blocks away.

“Pictures and video of the fire are startling and sad given what Seaside Park and neighboring Seaside Heights have endured with Superstorm Sandy. Governor Christie is deeply concerned and will get a first-hand look shortly at the scene, where he will be speaking further with Mayor Matthies and Mayor Akers and offering the state’s full resources and assistance. Our concerns and prayers are also with firefighters and first responders at the scene battling the blaze,” said Michael Drewniak, Press Secretary to Governor Chris Christie.

Officials say some people are being treated for smoke inhalation.
Fire crews from Monmouth and Atlantic counties have been called in for assistance.

It is on NEWS12, Seaside can't get a break.
So far looks like everyone is OK, with such a fast spreading fire that's amazing.

I was thinking this but didn't want to say anything. It's been a super slow summer for these owners many reported revenues were down 50% from last year.

Who knows? Over 30 places got ruined.
Here is a webcam of the SSP area.

The south winds made it worse. It started in the s end and worked its way north. I'm surprised more didn't burn down. Thank you to all the firefighters who came to help.

I feel for the business people. One tragedy heaped on another. Thanks for posting the cam fishing mission not a lot from the fire to see but you can hear all the vehicles working to clean the debris.

Seems like ocean county folks can't catch a break. Heard this morning it started up again. I'm thinking there are parts that will not be rebuilt this time. Very sad.

A video posted by John Bushell this morning. There was an estimate that 70% of the pier was burned. Tragedy but at least no one was hurt.

There have been rumors for the longest time of condos being built in the South area instead of the rides. The value of the condos would be significantly more than the ride and parking revenue. I think that with the way things have happened condos may be a real possibility.

You may be right clamchucker. These may be the last years of the pier as we remember it.

At some point you can only take so much. Being kicked in the nuts is livable if you have the millions of dollars in support to rebuild. I don't see how they will do it again. I don't remember the long branch pier but think you could draw some similarities. Once they had the fire it was time to give up as the money was not there. Probably cost millions to rebuild the seaside pier after sandy. How much more can people take before they just walk away and cash out with the insurance settlements?

From nj.com

SEASIDE PARK — A raging fire that apparently began inside an ice cream store in Seaside Park has spread to at least 19 other buildings along the popular boardwalk on the Jersey Shore, and evacuations are being ordered for more than six blocks to the north, authorities said.
The blaze began about 2:05 p.m. at Kohr's Ice Cream near the boardwalk — not far from where Hurricane Sandy destroyed a large part of the Seaside Heights boardwalk last fall. The fire was fueled by a strong southeast wind and jumped to adjacent structures around 2:30 p.m., according to Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd.
Firefighters are battling the blaze as black smoke continues to pour out of the popular dessert shop and other structures, as seen in a video posted by the Jersey Shore Hurricane News on Facebook.
The winds are making it difficult for firefighters on scene to knock down the massive fire, according to Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
As of 4:30 p.m., firefighters were ordered to pull back because of the intensity of the flames, officials told The Star-Ledger.

Video scenes of the fire at Kohr's ice cream stand in Seaside Park A severe fire that started inside Kohr's ice cream stand has spread along other structures on the popular Seaside Park boardwalk on the Jersey Shore. (Video footage courtesy of Justin Auciello Jersey Shore Hurricane News)

The problematic winds that are helping spread the fire are moving at about 10 to 20 miles per hour in the southern direction, according to Jim Bunker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Mount Holly station. Thunderstorms are expected in the area of Seaside Heights and Seaside Park in the next two to three hours, and that could change the winds that are giving firefighters difficulty, Bunker said.
Several firefighters and residents were being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, according to Boyd, who did not know what caused the fire. No serious injuries have been reported.
This section of the Seaside boardwalk was damaged but not destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, which slammed into the beach town last October, sending the roller coaster from Casino Pier into the ocean. Funtown Pier, adjacent to the burning boardwalk, was decimated by the storm.

Those pics and video really help to show the magnitude of that fire. Thanks for sharing. T&P to all who had businesses there.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who live or have businesses in that area. As has been said, there is only so much you can take before you give up. I hope and pray this winter allows most to rebuild and get a renewed chance for the 2014 Summer season.

I don't know DS I think you are being too optimistic. Took a ride near there yesterday and it looks like the remains of a week long campfire. Lots of charred debris and damage. Some of those places may never come back. Sad.

I don't get it ...almost every park in NJ has burned down ....don't they ever think of fire prevention ....so now when they rebuild ,they will build the exact same thing ...same way ....I hope they think about it

You make a good point madcaster. I dont know the exact cause of the fire but heard it started in the ice cream shop. Sometimes after a hurricane they issue expedited permits just to get things up and running. Maybe when it's rebuilt they should be a little more diligent. Not trying to point the finger at anyone, just thinking out loud.
