for 014 a 5-3/4 inch chubby wedgehead[narrowed head]swims wonderful and it is actually to replace one that was lost in a freak incident.
I had this plug laying on a rock and brought in a fish,as I swung it to shore the rod tip caught the other plugs tail hook, the fish yanked the rod and the lure went flying into the current and floated away, boy was I pissed off,so,I made another one.

How big are the gators you get where you fish? This year we had some for about 2 months and then they split. Shortest year ever for bluefish action.

Rip-Plugger
12-07-2013, 12:15 PM
Hi Steve,

well, the gators can be anywhere from 2 pounds to 16 pounds, seems the small ones even have big balls, they hit large swimmers like it was nothing.
I guess that since they can chop off a piece they are not afraid to hit something almost as big as they are.

well stix,I had to come up with a name that describes what the colors look like as I custom mixed them myself.such colors are not sold like these are.

^^^^^Yellow is a favorite color of mine I'm not sure but believe its up there in the visibility scale similar to chartreuse. I like to cast yellow plugs at dawn and dusk. As for the orange I like it too but for me it attracts a lot of bluefish. That can be fun, just my observations. Nice work gents keep em coming.

surfstix1963

As silly as it may sound I find putting the orange on the bottom and sides does attract more blues but the yellow on bottom seems to even the score some.I also blend my yellows with opaque and transparent airbrush paints.I also have another little secret by fogging in some gold over the yellow.

When I first started surf fishing one bright sunny hot morning I wasn't catching anything, a guy I met that morning fishing told me that there are a few big blues around.
Cast a bright plug, make a big commotion with it and these big blues will get pissed off and clobber that plug. He liked bright orange.
It works, at times out of nowhere a Gator will explode all over these plugs.
Its my favorite color on bright days for finding blues.

Dogfish, you are correct, the big plug makers are just not into doing large bodied swimmers,I do them because I wanted them and could never find them at all.
that's my biggest reason for starting to make my own.
with it's compact body it will cast like a baseball and with it's wide profile it will waggle heavy and will push lots of water aside as it goes along, thats what gets a fish's attention even if the fish does not see the lure,it damn sure hears it moving along.
at 3 oz,it will even cut though wind in your face well and not tumble like a potato chip.

and thanks for the kind words.

well,my partner like yellow plugs and my new fishing friend[CMS or connor] who makes plugs likes yellow too.
since I was also making a small one for myself I hung all of them and shot them all yellow at the same time plus I had a new can of yellow paint.
I usually like 2 tone colors mostly dirty banana[black/yellow bottom with old school sparkles].
I did do 2 of them with 2 diff shades of yellow.
