I received this as part of the regular mailing.
The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced the winners of the 2013 Skillful Angler Awards Program. The program honors anglers who catch both freshwater and marine fish that are not quite record size, but are large enough to have tested the angler's skill and be worthy of recognition.
The Skillful Angler program highlights the great fishing opportunities found in New Jersey, and anglers of all ages and skill levels participate. This year 133 applications representing 24 different species were officially processed. Since the program's modest beginning (31 applicants in 1983), the Division has granted Skillful Angler status to 3,552 anglers.
For more information about the winners of each category and their catch, visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/skwinn13.htm (http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/skwinn13.htm). To learn more about the Skillful Angler program itself, including minimum size requirements for entry, visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/skflang.htm (http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/skflang.htm)on the Division's website.

A 3lb5z crappie is a monster! 12" is a slab crappie, 16" is bigger than a dinner plate. Great catch! the walleye and lake trout weren't too shabby either.

Subject: Spearfishing Category Added to Record Fish Program
Recognizing that spearfishing is growing in popularity, and that "spear gun
hunters" routinely harvest fish that equal or exceed current marine state
records, the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has created a new Spearfishing
category in the State Record Fish Program. The spearfishing category will
recognize spear fishers who have obtained a level of proficiency that allows
them to harvest exceptional specimens.
For more information on the program, including eligible species and their
minimum weights, visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/news/2014/recfish-spearfishing.htm
on the Division's website.

A lot of these guys have magnavision that causes a 24" striper to appear to be 28" underwater. Have seen many short and out of season fish caught by spearfishers. Quite a few in manasquan inlet. Where is the game warden when you need him? Sorry finchaser don't know if you like spearfishers or not. I did read how one got the fluke world record the other day nicely done. just too much rule breaking going on by these guys. Wish they were more regulated. My .02.

^^^ Well this is one fish that isn't too small for them. Would have had an accident in my pants if I ran across that.

You're right bababooey,
Spear fisherman seem to be one group that often take undersized fish.
I've never tried it but I do hear that it is hard to judge a fishes true size underwater.
