Fished ocean side from 5:30 to 10:00 this morning.
Didn't catch anything but it was great getting out there.
Threw some new plugs to see how they swam and checked out some new water (to me).
Great time, thrilled the season has finally started (need some warmer water now).

Hopefully just a couple trips in Jersey this year, will see how things go (when need to load up on the dead stuff).
Going to keep the secret spots to find dead stuff to myself.:HappyWave:

A few visits hopefully.
Will start throwing your teasers soon when the water starts warming and the fish start eating.

Nice- thanks for the report. Don't know exactly where you were but if you are ever close to jbay the flats in the back will give up some fish before the ocean does. Every year I catch em before 4-15 (catch and release before the season opens). Small bucktails or teasers can get it done.

Fished this morning 4:30-9:30.
Ocean side for most of it, bay side for an hour. Skunkaroo Threw lots of rubber and some plastic. Water was murky. Great morning to be out, checking out areas for the first time, lots of walking today. Looking forward to warmer water.

A pic of the sunrise...The ones in Jersey are nicer with the water in them....

Last 2 Sundays just getting familiar with a few beaches, getting some casting in, trying to rehab the shoulder, its like a 3.5 on a scale of 0-10 now...lots of room for improvement, but at least I'm getting out there.
It has been fun walking the beach, making some casts.

I fished an inlet E of jbay last night. last hour of incoming. 1 rat on bucktail and pork. This is Capt Gene's report from Montauk sportfishing-

It’s getting closer to the start of the fishing season (http://stat.dealtime.com/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=519&BEFID=96424&acode=530&code=530&aon=&crawler_id=1932220&dealId=NV5vrpnbiT0ZmS216GNP9Q%3D%3D&searchID=&url=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-57618-1854-0%2F2%3Fkwid%3D1%26mtid%3D570%26crlp%3D1_240251%26 kw%3D%7Bquery%7D%26linkin_id%3D%7Blinkin_id%7D%26s ortbid%3D%7Bbidamount%7D%26fitem%3D360694450636%26 mt_id%3D570%26mpre%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.c om%252Fitm%252Flike%252F360694450636%26sdc_id%3D%7 Bsdc_id%7D%26mid%3D446528&DealName=2014%20Fishing%20Season%2034%20Pcs%203%2F 0%20Fishing%20Treble%20Hooks%20Free%20Shipping&MerchantID=446528&HasLink=yes&category=0&AR=-1&NG=1&GR=1&ND=1&PN=1&RR=-1&ST=&MN=msnFeed&FPT=SDCF&NDS=1&NMS=1&NDP=1&MRS=&PD=0&brnId=2455&lnkId=8070676&Issdt=140504050746&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&dlprc=7.59&SKU=360694450636). I always consider the start as when the LAZYBONES starts sailing and that will be on May 9, with diamond jigging for stripers and bluefish. They will stick with that until the official start of the fluke season which is going to be May 17 with a five fish limit at 18”.

One of the local pinhookers was out earlier in the week fishing commercially for fluke and brought back around a hundred pounds (http://stat.dealtime.com/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=519&BEFID=96446&acode=575&code=575&aon=&crawler_id=1932213&dealId=GRBhOsrf70WmJZNp9ovc3g%3D%3D&searchID=&url=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-57618-1854-0%2F2%3Fkwid%3D1%26mtid%3D570%26crlp%3D1_240251%26 kw%3D%7Bquery%7D%26linkin_id%3D%7Blinkin_id%7D%26s ortbid%3D%7Bbidamount%7D%26fitem%3D191130105861%26 mt_id%3D570%26mpre%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.c om%252Fitm%252Flike%252F191130105861%26sdc_id%3D%7 Bsdc_id%7D%26mid%3D446528&DealName=Arm%20%26%20Hammer%20Pure%20Baking%20Soda %20-%20108%20Lb%20-%20Over%20One%20Hundred%20Pounds%20Fast%20Ship%29&MerchantID=446528&HasLink=yes&category=0&AR=-1&NG=1&GR=1&ND=1&PN=1&RR=-1&ST=&MN=msnFeed&FPT=SDCF&NDS=1&NMS=1&NDP=1&MRS=&PD=0&brnId=2455&lnkId=8070676&Issdt=140504050746&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&dlprc=129.99&SKU=191130105861). A couple of days later he tried it again and only caught one fish, but there was still a bit of a heave on and fluke don’t like that.

There have been reports of some small stripers being caught in the surf, so they are more or less on schedule. Their season is already opened and the boats should be able to start catching them by the middle of the month or so.

There also have been some vague rumors about the squid showing up at Rough Riders (http://stat.dealtime.com/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=2&BEFID=63715&acode=20&code=20&aon=&crawler_id=50027&dealId=ExRpxiRfZ9QPHbOYBZLEPw%3D%3D&searchID=&url=http%3A%2F%2Frakutenmarketplace.rdr.channelint elligence.com%2Fgo.asp%3FfVhzOC8fBggESSNgWlJZSxhmE ndpYRkKAwYObGUTUV8PE2pDdXFmGgVMAEsjOhsXG0kOcUhTSAo xJThYRlVeFjw9AkwbAU46CzcsPEBTQx1VNiYbDw5eVTdYJjZ*X 11FVlhyIAYHDgFScwgRChN2dXwfBwECDWZqWVdFG1UzSHw3MER WDUBVADEGPAoXSDoNdnZjHRRRVF47b15WU0oQeFNNTFAqKjREV g0CAW1lXltZRhF4VzEnMEJWVQ1aNjswUlhEEmgGdXR1TkJeUl8 7N1JfCB9IPVRNWwt9%26nAID%3D13736960&DealName=THOMAS%20Little%20Tiger%20%26%20Rough%20R iders%20755751&MerchantID=9021&HasLink=yes&category=0&AR=-1&NG=1&GR=1&ND=1&PN=1&RR=-1&ST=&MN=msnFeed&FPT=SDCF&NDS=1&NMS=1&NDP=1&MRS=&PD=0&brnId=2455&lnkId=8070676&Issdt=140504050746&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&dlprc=7.36&SKU=251289864-24836837), but that has to be kept a little quiet because when it gets too busy there the dock will be closed.

Capt Joe McBride of the MY MATE finished last season on the disabled list when he got a hip replaced. Hips and knees are to fishermen as elbows and shoulders are to baseball players. Now he’s starting out on the DL once again to get the other one done. Capt Pete Casale will be running the boat in the meantime, and it kind of looks like he will end up buying the boat from Joe at some point.

Capt Michael Potts of the BLUEFIN IV had his engine blow up over the winter and is fighting with the insurance company over coverage. In the meantime there is no engine in the boat, so his season is kind of up in the air as well.

And last but not least, over the winter, Capt Bart Ritchie of the MISTRESS TOO took a job running a boat cleaning (http://viglink.pgpartner.com/rd.php?r=5316&m=1454864465&q=n&rdgt=1399218397&it=1399391197&et=1399823197&priceret=9.95&pg=~~3&k=9ed998da188f56e7657d316acd3deeef&source=feed&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eamazon%2Ecom%2Fdp%2FB00HHA3 3U0%2Fref%3Dasc%5Fdf%5FB00HHA33U03092583%3Fsmid%3D A33AKRX39B0C8V%26tag%3Dpgmp%2D681%2D01%2D20%26link Code%3Ddf0%26creative%3D395109%26creativeASIN%3DB0 0HHA33U0&st=feed&mt=~~~~~~~~n~~~) up the south shore bays from Sandy and might wind up sticking with that rather than running charters here in Montauk

The annual Surfmasters tournament starts May 9 and will run until the end of June. If you are good enough and want to enter it, check in at Paulies Tackle Shop in town.

Well fellas the bluefish bite is really on and its crazy. Got into a mess o aggressive blues this morning 8-13 lbs. CSS by an inlet. The surf was big and they were hitting it big time. I tryed metal bucktails and plugs. Although the plugs were hard to toss it seems they wanted them most. Small plugs like sps and small bombers. Bucktails too but would not take poppers or metal. The fish were all in close so you didn't have to cast that far. Maybe because the water got cold? Great morning of fishing all on the incoming tide. Left them biting to go to work. Get out there they are here!

Fished gsb this morning, last of the outgoing tide. 8 bluefish to 12#. Buck and pork. No bass. Monty there is plenty of action in the bays along with a few bass. I didn't get one this morning. They are around. I would wait a week or so till the fish round the corner at breezy before spending time in the surf. my .02 and good luck.

Fished this morning 1:30-9:30 ocean side. Mini-marathon.
Missed a few fish again, then FINALLY landed my first New York fish.
Piked up 3 blues 20-25 inches on long casts, had to be over the sand bar, got them on Ava 27 red tail.
Was lots of fun, of course lost the largest one after a good fight.
Beautiful night and morning.

I fished this morning from 2:00 - 8:00 ocean side.
Picked up my first LI short bass on a 7" Loaded Red Fin at 3:00, missed another on next cast....
Then between 4:00 and 7:00 I picked up 8 blues. Would not hit metal. White metal lip and orange popper.....and one tore to shreds Hogy started the Blues fun.
Found some on Bunker, but only managed 1 in that melee.
Great time.

Fished yesterday morning from 1:30-10:00.
Water looked great, had a fun time out there.
Some how could only manage one blue fish the whole time.
It may be a PB for me as catching a fish on a biggest plug (Mikes 8 1/4 Commander)
Only saw one other guy fishing out there (in pick below) :HappyWave:
Water was a bit stained, cleaner 12-200 yards out.
Bunker flipping here and there every once and a while.
Had a great time, nice water, awesome weather....
Next time out for me is Sunday early AM. Can't wait.

Yup so true. I have been out fishing the SS 3times in the last week and only got one blue on buck and pork. It was so much better 2 weeks ago. Even jbay sucks from the beach this year. Congrats to monty surfstix and you other dudes cause I am not doing well. We need more spearing and am hoping the spot come in early this year. that always seems to kick things up a notch.

This was a report I read for both the SS and back bay. Where are the stripers?

"Got out last evening and hit the backside. Dead, no bait, not a touch- threw the bag. The other evening same thing out front and inlet side. Since the Blues came through it's been dead. Really not many bass in the reports"

Monty

I'm hearing from some others day break at the inlet the blues are around, but that hasn't proven itself to me just yet bass just plain sucks and the boats are going after seabass rather then fluke pretty sad Spring action our arms should be sore as hell at this point but not so.

^ Rich....same over this side of the pond... I took Monty to hell and back again last night....and we couldn't even raise a fish.......

the inconsistency is disappointing......
This morning he and I ran into another friend who fishes every day.......
He got a 25# bass on artificials 2 weeks ago and hasn't had one since that...

So I told Monty I guess the key is to fish every day.....to give some more consistently.....
Shortly after that, I got a text from another friend...who DOES fish every day.......he texted me this is the worst fishing he's seen, in terms of consistency, in 30 years of fishing the salt......

I have no answers at this point, other that many would be in agreement, that the biomass numbers are down....
Good to see you're able to get out some......:HappyWave:

I've already packed up for the Spring run here it just didn't happen the fish were out deep where I fish anyways couple of blues. No fluke seabass(RSA) is not great it's ok but a lot of shorts to cull through and a long ride to the reef on most PB's.Rods are washed up and put away it is just not worth the time period(unless you want exercise) I thought I would never hear those words again after the first moratorium but here we go again. If you want fish hit a boat and hope for the best.Welcome to NY...

Fished SS this morning, 2:00 to 8:00.
El-Skunkaroo.
Couple light hits and two Hogys wrecked by blues was all the action I could get and could not seal the deal......
Beautiful night and morning.
Traffic was a bit of a pain, 11:30-1:40 on the road for a normal hour 20 minute trip. Got off track and the GPS was recalculating for a solid 10 minutes, ended up driving around the city a bit. Atrocious drivers, part of this fishing experience fishing on LI is the trip there, a bit of an adventure at times with traffic, slow cars in left lane, cars drifting through lanes, someone backing up on 95 in the right lane last night, frieking bright camera lights going off at intersections for no reason, construction. :viking:

Boat report went on my uncles boat yesterday. We fluked and got some up to 18". Heard about bunker on the radio so we cruised all the way to moriches. Found a lot of bunker and some with activity so we started livelining. Well no stripers but we got covered up with blues big ones too. Up to 16 pounds. Hell of an exercise reeling those big brutes in. All fish released. I think big bluefish taste terrible and wouldn't feed them to a cat. Still a great time.

I'm anti boat and anti kayaks. It's the challenge of catching from the surf that's fun.
Its fun fishing (even if its not catching), the new water. Learning....
Jersey sun rises are much better than LI (lands in the way).

Well fished from 2:30-7:30 this morning and believe it or not I caught a fish.

My push further east continued. Lots of walking this trip.
Was a beautiful night, still I spent the first 2 hours acting like a banana head, so that fishing was relatively not early on.
So really started fishing around 4:30.
Around 5:15 I lost a fish on a 5 1/2" loaded Red Fin, things were back to normal.
A little while later I caught around a 24 inch Striper on a yellow Bernzy....

Then between then and 7:30 I caught 4 Blues between 4-6 pounds, easily lost 10 or more, 5 of which were on for over 30 seconds (I am in mid-season form). Plus missed a few hits. Lots of fun, all the Blue action was top water on Superstrike poppers and assorted Spooks (Awesome Strikes on the plugs). Had to really make a commotion to get their attention.
Great fun time fishing a new location for me.

Even found a sunrise.

I didn't see any bunker around. Some birds were working a good 150+ yards out, but I think they were onto something small.
Never came within casting range.

Thanks guys, I'm just happy to be able to get out there and fish when I can, catch or no catch, its great being out there.
I try to make each trip memorable in some way, whether its new water, find a dead thing, walking 20 miles while fishing with a friend, catching, learning, whatever, just give each outing a 100% and have fun, get something out of the trip. And I'm lucky in that I do have fun each trip, catch or no catch.

Nice catch surfstix. I have given up on catching bass. Seems like there has to be a lot of bait in the surf to catch them. I fished breezy twice in the last week and didn't do so great. Picked up some fluke on gulp and bucktail they were all shorts. This morning I tried from 5-7. The south wind was blowing in my face and it was hard to cast. Got zilch, Did see a nice sunrise.

Ended up with the skunk.
Was a lot of weeds in the water, almost every cast was messed up. Got somewhat better as the tide went out.
Should have made a major move after a few casts but stuck it out and walked a lot of beach.
Had a fish on a red fin but lost it in close around 5:00.:beatin:

Headed east and started fishing 2:30 this morning. Normal start for me. New area for me and a few casts and missed a hit on a redfin/teaser. Decided to head a few miles west after an hour and half and try another new spot and around 4:30 had a Hogy bit in half. Sun came up and found blues rolling and cutting through bait about 150 yards out.
Finally a bit of luck....good luck.
They would move up and down the beach and between 40 an 200 yards the next 2 hours.
Ended up landing 7 and loosing 5 (was 4 for 4 at one point :kooky:).
Loooongs casts and they liked the Green Ava 17, until tube was ripped off. They would not hit a red Ava. Got 6 on the green Ava and 1 on an Epoxy jig, which I lost when a blue cut through the 80 lb leader. Could not get them to hit a popper until 8:30 when I was into the biggest one, which I lost when it straightened the tail hook (typical) :beatin:.
Had a great time, only one other guy came by and fished near me for about 20 minutes and left when he could not hook up.
I really enjoy hooking up with blues this size and its always a bonus if its ocean side. Was crazy lucky running into them, great fun with a nice bend in the rod.

Was a dressed VMC 9171PS, 3x I think a 3/0, to small. Wondering if the 4/0 closed 9170 are significantly stronger.
I have been looking at the and have been thinking they should be bigger/stronger.
Speaking of hooks, looking for one I can tie a bit of bucktail on and attach to metal. For Albie metal, ones I have 9171PS in the size are not very strong, thinking 1/0 and its pretty thin.

J Barbosa
08-10-2014, 07:31 PM
The open eye (9171) and closed eye (9170) are the same wire gauge and strength. The only difference is the eye position they are shipped with.

Do you have 4/0 and 5/0s? The 3/0s are much thinner gauge.

yes, I'll bump up to 4/0 and 5/0.
any thoughts on albie hooks on metal?

A size 1/0 hook is pretty small. That's right in the sweet spot for saltwater fly fisherman.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3873/14696085997_357ec60e4f_b.jpg (https://www.flickr.com/photos/94721242@N02/14696085997/)
The SL11 and SP11 are both 3x hooks yet have thinner gauged wire. They are the same hook just a different bend at the shank; the SL has a traditional o'shaughnessy bend.

The SC15 is a great hook as well and if you wanted even stronger in that style buy the SC17 which is tarpon grade.

The teasers on the right are 2/0 Mustad 3407s. The 3407 is a trusted hook in sizes 4/0 and above that's what most of your commercial teasers are tied on. It's also what you will find in a Blue Frog bucktail or Andrus Jetty Caster in sizes 7/0 to 8/0. Same style as the SL11 just much weaker and cheaper in the smaller sizes.

I would stop in at tight lines and see these in person. I know they carry all of the hooks mentioned above except the 3407 (not sure if they have these).

Had a great time despite my inability to catch fish.
New area, liked it a lot.
Found some nice white water and I should have caught more fish.
Had the weekly Hogy bit in half at sunrise.
Missed a couple hits, small fluke on a darter.
Then finally at 8:00 I landed a short bass on a Superstrike popper.
Had missed a fish about 10 minutes earlier on a Mambo in the white water, then FINALLY that bass hit the popper in the white water.
I haven't seen many stripes this year, so it was nice.....
Had a great time, nice morning, really enjoy fishing that type of water. Even squeezed a quasi sunrise pic out of the trip.

I have been fishing for bass at night where the slip gut is less, which really cuts down on fishable places. In the last week I picked up 5 bass on SPs fishing 2 hours after sunset. Beautiful morning, 2 shooting stars. Would have traded the shooting stars for some rain at sunrise.
Some small weeds/muck in most of the water, needed to check line after each cast.
Caught 3 short bass, 1 on a 9" sluggo around 4:00, the other 2 on yellow Howdys around 6:00 and 7:00.
Had a few hits and misses, lots of fun working a mile+ of beach. All fish and misses were in the white water.
Casting over the bar saw no action.
Did not see any bait or birds working, didn't even have the usual Hogy bit in half

Thanks, but not really, lots I could have done better/different.
Spent too much time in one spot instead of working it like I did the others the remaining trip.
Most of the "action" I had came on casts 30-45 degrees instead of straight out. Should have done more of that, a lot more.
Wanted to throw Mambos a lot on this trip. Did some but not nearly enough. Lots of second thoughts. There is so much more structure on the beaches up on LI than jersey. Lots of fun out there trying to figure it out.

Think I made one good decision when the vehicle with the head lights lit up the surf and I did not follow fishinmission78's suggestion and try his "ostrich" move... NOT

When the summertime idiots do that at IBSP at night, I make a big show like I am adjusting my pants or waders. I turn around and face the ocean while I am doing the adjusting. Then I drop my pants accidentally. As I go to bring them up I make sure I stick my hand back through my crotch like an ostrich and wave to them. After they have seen my hairy moon they quickly move on.

First albie sighting yesterday very brief hauling a$$ down the beach didn't even have time to throw a cast.
That is good to hear.
Hopefully can hook up with them this year.

Fished form 2:00 to 9:15 this morning ocean side LI.
Nice south east wind, awesome looking water......but tons of weeds. Almost every cast got weeds on either my line or plug.
Threw lots of Hogys and nothing but weeds.
Did manage 1 ~20 inch bass at 5:30 on a loaded 7 1/2 inch red fin in some white water. Had a bump or two during the dark.
Walked further west today to try to get away from the weeds, no luck, but the bass was caught at the end of that walk.
Around 8:00 was almost done, fishing the last area where I would walk back to my vehicle. Was a nice rip perpendicular to the beach.
Throwing a yellow Howdy and it gets hit and I land around a 30 inch blue.
Then between then and 9:15 I caught 2 more around the same size. Lost 3 more in the wash (after long fights). And then lost one that I was losing the tug of war with after like 30 seconds. That one felt heavier and was much stronger (I'm a Knucklehead).
All other blues hooked or caught after the first one on the 2 3/8 oz white Little Neck. Its a frieking rocket.
Great time, love the blue action.

Liked the water....hated the weeds

Fished this morning 2:30-9:15.
Beautiful night, lightning over the water way, way out.
Not much happening in the dark, lost a fish early on. Worked a solid 1 3/4 miles of beach.
False dawn and picked up a Striper ~32 inches, kept it, plug was hooked deep. Then picked up 3 blues ~ 3 pounds on SS white popper and that Howdy, only lost one.
Then started the walk back, had at least 7 hits or swirls on plugs without hooking up. Was fishing SS needles often this trip, had a solid hit on a white one in a rip and my rock like reflexes tried to set the hook like 2 seconds late :beatin: knucklehead.
Then back where I started picked up 2 more blues on that Howdy, ~ 5 pounds.
Had a great time fishing that water. Was a calm surf, but the area had tons of structure that is fun to fish.

Thanks, I spent a lot of time fly fishing streams and rivers for trout when I was a lot younger. Fishing the LI water which has a ton of structure really gets me excited. Like the fishing for trout did (walking, finding structure, fishing it and trying to fool the fish), get lost in the pursuit of catching a fish.

Well fished Lake Atlantic from 2:00 to 9:30 this morning.
Only managed 3 blues (two on white SS popper, one on Point Jude Po-Jee).
The one on the Po-Jee was spitting up 4" sand eels (Po-Jee was similar size to the sand eels).
Lost a couple fish, had the usual rod bender-drag peeling me not set the hook hard enough fish :beatin:.

Spent the last hour trying to cast 20 yards longer than I am capable of trying to reach a feeding frenzy.

Covered 2 miles of beach (1x in dark, 1x in light), really missed the white water, but after sun up there was a lot of action with swirls sporadic. Had a few 20 feet away that I was inept at hooking up. Not much action in dark 1 solid hit, maybe a bump or two.

Its actually unbelievably different than jersey. Rocks and boulders and cuts in sand bars, drop offs. The structure over the two miles of beach I fished is a lot of fun to fish. So far I have not had any issues with crowds on LI.
I have had to become more friendly and always say hi or hello when walking past someone. Also need to work at my chit/chat skills a bit, have had a few growls at me when I basically don't respond to someones little chit/chat. Its not like jersey in that way.
For instance in jersey when I first met Dark and said hello he yelled obscenities at me. I don't think that would ever happen on LI.

If there was not any beach replenishment in jersey a would never fish LI. The replenishment really disgusts me.

Finchaser broke me out of that friendliness when he started calling me "Mayor of the Beach" and "Dark Skies the Welcome Wagon".....:bucktooth:
I was friendly to everyone I would meet, giving away half my tackle in the process...because I felt sorry for the guys who were not catching....
Fin led me to see the light that my kindness and generosity was naive...and no matter how much I asked the guys to "keep their mouths shut and not bring their friends" on the nights when we got into nice fish....invariably the next night the area would be lit up like a festival from "friends of a friend" sent by guys who had falsely promised to keep their mouths shut about a bite......:don't know why:
I have also been approached for "conversation" by non-fishermen in the Asbury area quite a few times, before I wised up and realized they were looking for more than friendly conversation.....Yep when I first started in this game I was very naive and believed in the goodness and good intentions of everyone.....I sure did learn some harsh lessons along the way......:scared::bonk:

So....I may have gotten a little more surly over the years........:kicknuts:
Now...I don't talk to anyone out there at night...unless I recognize them, or have seen them fishing by themselves at least 3 times....it's all the OGB's fault. ;)
Monty, my sincere apologies for grumping at you that night....:HappyWave:

And the stories about me stinking like a sewer....
Smelling like a dumpster.....
Can't catch a fish to save my life....

All are carefully crafted PR.....to divert peoples' attention in directions other than mine...so I can fish in the quiet and solitude that I enjoy the most...:fishing:

I spent three hours doing that this morning trying to reach breaking fish...Just another 20 yards!! lol

Not much going on in Montauk the albies were out in front of the light house yesterday out of reach of course fly guys in boats were probably having a blast.Fluking is coming to a halt with the very occasional decent fish, sea bass/porgy are pretty good had a 4 lb. seabass yesterday surf isn't worth getting out of the truck as far as I'm concerned. I did see some blues off the sand beaches the other afternoon also out of reach.I may get out this afternoon if the winds lay down and do my last fluke/seabass trip.

Thanks for the heads up surfstix I heard that too. Its like fly fishing heaven there right now but not too many bass from what I heard. I fished the south shore today. Some weed around and had to fish between the nasty stuff. Got 2 blues on metal. Was hoping for some stripes. did see some commotion out far but it was about a half mile out. def too far to cast. Hearing some good stripe reports will try to get back out and get some!

Fished this morning 2:30 to around 10:00.
Went with JB, had a great time, talked lots of fishing.
Covered almost 2 miles of water, some weed in areas. Lots of white water, high wave period.
I could only manage 1 short bass on the yellow howdy after sun up. Lost a bass in the wash on a needle around 3:30 or so (knuckle head).
Did not see any bait and didn't even see a bird pick anything from the water.
Good time, passed the Monty curse to JB (missing and losing fish).
Lots of fun, not much action.

Both fish hit in the white water

Lots of weeds in the water, threw lots of plugs, rubber and metal, only had one hit and dropped a fluke in the wash.

Hardly any bait around and did not see a swirl, birds working or anything else caught.

No sunrise pictures? This is not an authentic Monty 2.0 report. :kicknuts:

The sunrises on LI I believe are geologically impossible (over the water), although somehow I think I took pictures of 2 of them.
Yesterday was the first day in 3 years that after fishing my shoulder did not have any burning sensation. 11 months after the surgery.
It was like something was missing. Casted non-stop for 7 hours, same rod and effort. Monty 2.0 is about there (sun-rise-less). And first skunk in 8 trips (2nd in 16), so I would say I'm 100% there with the solid skunk yesterday :viking:

Great conditions.
Hit on a Hogy early on, missed.
Lost a bass around 3:30 on a SS Bottle.
Then finally broke my little slump with a bass on the SS bottle around 4:30.
Added one short around 7:30 on a 6" rubber shad.
Had a couple bumps in the dark, not much action at all after sun up.

Great time out there, incredible weather, nice water, not much catching, but the fishing was lots of fun.

I was scratching my head looking at that too monty. Sand eel maybe. Is it possible it's a baby lizard fish? I know lizard fish are more with the vertical stripes but at that juvenile size and angle it's hard to tell.
The sunrise pics are awesome. Some of the nicest I have seen anywhere. Did you see a lot of folks on the beach up there? My buddy heard of a slight bite in the last 2 days. Wondering if the crowds started to flock to mecca yet.

Fished this morning 2:15-8:15.
Felt great being out there in the cool weather.
Bright sky.
Covered a good mile plus of water, white water a bit scarce.
Had a hit on SP Minnow Bone around 3:00, then finally around 4:00 landed one short ~ 22 inches on the plug.
Lost another after that fish, again on that plug.
Then around 5:30 I was extremely lucky and found an area with some bass around. Between 5:30 and 7:00 landed 9 more bass, largest ~ 32 inches.
All action on the trip was in white water. Lots of fun, they seemed to only want narrow plugs, light color (metal lips, Hogy no action).
Even some top water action with RM floating needle and a Winch Spook. Loaded Red Fins got slammed. I missed an unbelievable amount of hits and only lost a few fish. Left with them still feeding.

Pic of the water, as the waves would break and white water would fill the area I could see bass feeding every so often (on what I have no idea).
Was great fun, no one else around.

Maybe it was whitebait. Thats what we saw at the Cove under the lighthouse.
Late report. My buddy and I fished from Turtle Cove to further south this weekend. Sat sucked. We did get some nice big blues on poppers that put up a good fight. No bass. On Sunday there was some whitebait jumping out of the surf and small bass chasing them. We each picked up a handful of small schoolies on bucktails and poppers when the sun came up.

Finally got into some fish. I have been getting blanked regularly so saw no reason to report. Out at least 3 nights a week. Fishing has been very poor for me this season so far. Decided to make the run out East and fished Monday and part of Tues. There were a lot of little bass in the surf feeding on anchovies and spearing. Managed 27 bass to 12# on the day and overnight. In the day bite bucktails, SS popper and small metal were the ticket. In the night it was bucktails and darters. Seems like it may hold for a while. I'm glad because it was getting very frustrating. All fish still swimming.

When they did it was mayhem. I got somewhere around 10 gorilla blues 15 lbs and up. Missed at least twice that many when I switched over to a popper and they were crashing out of the water after it. about 1 1/2 hours of action. What a blast! Two words to describe this fishing trip, Extreme Futility.
Fished this morning from 1:30-10:00.
Beautiful night, surf to calm.
Between 2:00 and 5:00 I hooked and lost 5 fish. Missed around 15 hits. One time was playing the fish and the knot on the breakaway clip slipped off the clip and the bass (felt like a bass), swam away with the loaded red fin (a first for me). Only caught 1 short bass on a loaded red fin around 5:30. Had hooked fish on a needle, red fin, silent assassin and a darter. Over the bar, inside the bar and in the trough. Was ridiculous. Then around 7:30, waded out to the sand bar for a good hour plus and had 4 blow ups on spooks and poppers, not one connecting.
Had a great time with the action but almost threw the rod and reel up in the air after one of the hits I missed, and a bunch of swearing between 4:00 and 5:00.
Weird fishing trip.

Sounds like a very frustrating trip probably the NY death rats hard to hook up with unless you downsize the plugs or hook size on larger plugs.I did ok with the rats I ran out for a bit used a bone color SP just use Finchasers upgrade method for the hooks.Bottom line 18 very small bass in 2 hours missed a few more(8-10 a.m.) in one spot, out front. bite is better after sunup.

All my action was in dark except for the popper/spook action. 3 of the fish took drag. There were some larger fish mixed in, one fish that swirled on a spook wasn't a schoolie. Was crazy frustrated. They hit 7" redfins, no hits on 5".
