I was reading FMs comments about the mosquitoes on the sedges at island beach. When the wind is from the weat you better be covered up like a Muslim lady! They get to be the size of Volkswagens here. If there was a contest we would win hands down.
Anyone else think they have the biggest mosquitoes?

I have to throw a vote in for Sandy Hook. They are so bad I stop fishing that place in June. The first parking lot or sea bright isn't so bad. As for the rest I would rather wait till Oct and the frost comes in to kill some of those blood sucking vampires.

There is a nasty black fly population at the hook...on a west wind you can't fish the northern beaches. They don't even pay the OFF spray any attention.

sandy hook for sure. I think one of us is going to find one at night big enough to put in the dead things thread. They get almost to the size of golfballs after they suck your blood out. I hate those black flies as well jb. They are terrible this year.

I don't know exact what the area is called but the sedges in union beach are brutal. I bet that is not only a breeding ground but a well developed city for skeeters.

Agreed. some of the nj pests are super bugs. Could survive a nuclear blast. Deet 100% seems to be the only thing that works.

Dumb questions but where does one purchase 100% deet? Does it stink really bad?
What % deet is in the standard OFF spray?

^^^^^ You can get 100% deet in shops that specialize in hunting and camping. I don't know any in jersey. I think the deet content in Off is around 29 or 30 percent. Something like that.

well since I am an old man I don't care about sun tans anymore. I am fully clothed from head to toe when out fishing. Hat/ buff/ long sleev shirt/ gloves/ long pants/ shoes. Yep an old man am I. so that being said it helps with the skeeters.

C'mon Rob...don't tell me my comments about you being old got to ya! :moon: :HappyWave:
Did your wife tease you about your latest birthday? If so that just means she honestly loves ya! Give her my regards. She's a really good match for you... :HappyWave:
I'm a little older than you....I think I'm 25 in my head..:kooky:....but when I fish a few nights a week I have to pop 3 Alleves every time before starting... to take the aches and pains away...
.....
I was young and stupid once..
Would rather be older and wiser now.....:learn:
Finchaser is older than us all....he's older than dirt....and he's still catching fish..:clapping:...putting the young guns to shame with high numbers when the fish are there.
Most of my old salt fishing mentors are in their 60's and 70's. Watching them fish is still a privelege....like watching a master paint one of the old classic paintings....they get better as they get older...
I do agree with what you said about covering up....even on the jetties in the summer I wear full gear and hood every time out unless the wind will be a steady 5+ mph from the E or N....I don't want to let the bugs win at night and put me off of my game..:fishing:

Your not old till you have to substite Viagra for Aleve. When you need 3 viagras its time to hang up the rod, DS, the land tuna rod and the surf rod.:HappyWave:

No offense but 3 viagras are going to give you trouble. That could lead to priapism a condition where you have an erection that won't go down after 24 hours. Would have to see a Dr if this happens. When you take viagra only take one at a time!

Info direct from the man.
This year I have had the least amount of problems with mosquitoes (ever). Its like they are in trouble like the Striped Bass population, just not around. Would be interesting to hear Tom Fote's opinion on the lack of mosquitoes.

^^ This is why I come to this site so often.
You can't get this level of entertainment anywhere else. :kicknuts:
I could only imagine what would happen if all the members here met up in a tavern and had a few drinks.
FYI...I just spoke to FOTE and he said all the mosquitoes are offshore just outside the 3 mile line! There is not a problem since we are still above the sustainable fishery threshold and the 2011 year class will save the species. :learn:

JB thanks for the update.
Did he mention the balance between the no-seeums and mosquitoes? That it was perfect now. I know Fote is big on balance.
