Are high gas prices eat into your fishing budget?

Do you make less trips or cut back in other ways?

I figured out I spend on average $20-30 per each surf trip.

Thankfully gas prices are declining. I saw $3.06 for regular this week @ Costco in Clifton, NJ

Whenever I fish I can, so no less trips. But the cost of going to LI certainly impacts my fishing budget.
$30.00-$50.00 a trip in gas, tolls are I think $25.00, normally 1 trip a week.
Expensive, but I really like fishing there, each trip I spend a solid 6 hours fishing, always feeling that I had a great time.
Always enjoyed the Jersey trips too, likely cost a little less than half for the Jersey trips. But that beach replenishment took all the fun out of it.

I liked it better when they were $2.39 a gallon. Right now I have a pickup so I don't take too many far trips. Try to stay around ocean and monmouth, learn the best tides to fish each area. Each trip cost me around $5 in gas, sometimes $10. I think if gas went to 4 or 4.50 a gallon you wouldn't need to change striped bass regs because a lot less guys would fish. Especially the meatmen. They would have to justify the extra gas price by keeping their limit every time. Or the would just stay home and be the jackoffs they are. Just my opinion.:)

On the way home last night on Route 37, Toms River, I noticed two gas stations near each other that were $2.99. Can't remember the last time I saw less than $3.00. The WaWa gas station on Route 37 was the next cheapest at $3.07.

I fish, live and work close to the water. It's not so bad for me. If gas ever went up to the $4/gallon they are charging in California I think a lot of guys would stop fishing. I bet places like Hatteras are seriously affected each year that prices rise 25% or more. Maybe Montauk too.

Great to hear about $2.99, it seems like all the stations near me are hovering between $3.04-3.15 for cash regular.

$3.04 Clifton, NJ @ Costco

$3.88 Stamford, CT @ Mobile

$3.65 Providence, RI @ Shell

Round trip to RI plusexploration cost me 15 gallons of super @ $3.40 plus tolls. Not bad at all and I can see this becoming a regular thing.

I was in Costco on Fri and the gas was $2.89 a gallon woo hoo! I drive about 60 miles each way to go fishing and it could be more if going to island beach like blazin said. When the prices are lower I defiantly feel like fishing more.

^^^^^ Yes that's why you shouldn't buy gas in Montauk. Fill up before you get to the Hamptons. You will pay about 75c a gallon less. I have cut down on my trips too as the gas prices have risen. Use to drive to Montauk every week spring and fall. Now I wait till my friends who are local to there start catching larger ones. I can't justify the expense to catch schoolies. I am glad that after Labor Day the prices have dropped some. Between all the permits and gas bills I probably spend $2k a year just for fishing access and travelling to and fro.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. I searched online and couldn't find the reference?

There was an idea flowing around a few years ago with the anti fossil fuel crowd...if the price of gas rose (either through higher oil prices or more taxes on gas) we would start driving smaller cars like they do in Europe. It would also lead people to buy more fuel efficient cars reducing our overall dependency on fossil fuels.

Nothing at all contributing to lower prices...he even tried to block fracking but never succeeded. If it wasn't for American companies coming up with new technology (fracking) we would be paying over $4 at the pump.

Seems like $1.50-1.65 is the norm right now.

I feel like the refiners always gouge the stations and consumers on the way down and on the way up.

So quickly to raise prices yet so slow to drop...

BassBuddah
02-01-2016, 10:07 AM
Good point. Isn't that the american way? With a market such as gasoline some consumers still will pay more for a certain brand. They charge as much as they can get away with until consumers buy more efficient cars and trucks.
