You look at that and say hey thats not the past that's going to be jetty country in about 2 weeks. I wish people had the ability to really see what that video represents. Even though i don't fish the jetties I think it will be a big loss. Thanks for sharing finchaser

The jetties all along the Jersey Coast used to have some of the most incredible fishing. It is a spectre of what it once was. Brings a tear to an old man's eye. Thanks for sharing finchaser

That was sad to watch. They are doing some stuff like that in longbeach now. Hope it is more filling with rocks than with sand.

Beach replenishment may have 'far reaching' impacts on ecosystems

Thanks for that. Pretty fascinating-

"We found rather long lasting declines in invertebrate abundances due to replenishment," said Joshua Kohn, a professor of biology who headed the study, which was published this week in the journal Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science. "These invertebrates are what shorebirds eat when they poke their bills in the sand. They are also food for small inshore fish."

"Such reductions may have far reaching consequences for sandy beach ecosystems," the researchers warn in their paper, "as community declines can reduce prey availability for shorebirds and fish."

While other researchers had previously looked at the impact of beach replenishment on certain taxa of invertebrates at specific beaches, the UC San Diego study is unusual in that it examined the impact on the total invertebrate community across eight different beaches in San Diego County from Oceanside south to Imperial Beach. The UC San Diego biologists were also able compare their results at each beach where sand was pumped onshore to an untreated section of the beach, which served as a control.

If that is true, how come PETA, PEW, or that MPA guy in Rumson aren't out there filing lawsuits against the gov't? Seems it's ok to do it in the ocean but the back bays are sacred? I had a neighbor who wanted to rebuild a bulkhead on the backside of barnegat. He wanted to also make a bigger berth for his boat, and knock down the original house he bought to build a bigger one. By the time he was finished looking at permits, DEP applications, and the long drawn out town meetings and the permitting process, he told me it would have cost him 40k, and that did not include the cost of construction. Just the permitting process and some wetlands approval applications and processes. So he decided not to do it and scaled it down substantially.

Yet the ACOE and the Fed can do whatever it wants. Kill all the marine life in an area. No one is doing anything about it. Doesn't seem right to me. Where are tree huggers? They should be charging the beaches and machines to force surrender.

Where does the ALS stand on this issue?

He only listens to the sound of money being dropped into his campaign slush fund. Like leaves falling from the trees in the fall. Otherwise he doesn't give a crap. All about the benjamins. jmho
