actually it was not the way it looked in the pic,I stripped off the epoxy and that's what you are seeing,I then drilled out the old eyes and put in bigger ones and left the old pink paint.
in the refit pic it looks as it did new.
I was lucky that most of the old black top paint came off with the epoxy chipping, didn't have to sand anything.
it did have a few bangs though.

well,my tendonitis has healed pretty good, still more to go but, doing much better,no more limping for 2 months+.
Monty is very good at liquidating assets, wish I could do it like he does.
Ditto for you and yours M8,,,can't wait to get out there with the wife to try a few.
I know it,he fishes hard like I used to do in my youth.now,I go when the tide is good and fish long, slow, crank by crank.
hope it is not like last may/june if he does.
it sucked big time last year, fish showed up hit good then vanished in a good, solid 11 days.

Nice work Monty and Rip!!! Ive been restoring some of my beat up plugs this cold crappy winter!! Did a SP that was totally beat,a needle i found on a jetty this fall that was in bad shape added new eyes to this 1 and just did a metal lip that was white and bluefished up lol...I hope the new versions work as well as they did when they were the original colors!!...Either way its been a good way to chase away the "shack nastys":)

well, these are my first on the variation of the pikie design.
I do fish the creek chubb giant pikies too and with great effect, took many a bass/gator on them.
as for the 3 I posted those are the first very large I have made, they are spot specific and I hope they pass the swim test.
as for the rods that I throw them with.I have 4.
a tica surf uhea rated 2-6 oz@9 feet with an Omoto Hubilie 777-s3 on it,another is a quantum mocean surf stick@9 feet under rated by miles @1-4 oz but,it is actually more like 3-8 oz,that has a shimano 700-b on top of it.
then I have an okuma CSX surf that's 10feet rated @ 3-8 oz with an abu 7000ics-pro-rocket on it.
my last rig is another tice surf uhea rated 2-6 oz and 9 feet with an omoto chief 7000csm mag on it.
those rigs are more than capable of doing it with very large wood.
you know what,so many guys fish small, like with medium sized freshwater sized lures and they do catch but, when you fish large you catch better quality fish and those big swimmers actually call the fish to hunt them down.
I have proved it to myself and friends of mine so many times and still I don't get why they don't switch up and go large.
for the life of me there are times when I almost feel guilty that I am getting bit good and the other guys are all throwing pencils and doing almost nothing at all.
I have had guys that come from other places see me getting bit and after a half dozen good fish one will come over and ask what I am doing.
I show them what I am fishing with and they always say "holy crap man",,,thats a huge plug,,,then they go back to the way they were fishing and didn't catch any or just 1 fish.
I learned a long time ago,if there are adult bunkers around and bass/gators around, throw a big swimmer because they are hunting for bunkers, bunkers swim and don't tear up the surface unless they are being chased, otherwise the fish will cruise around hunting for them.
then they hear/see my plug.
oh yeah,thanks,,,,,,

you know even when there are not many bunker around it still works as well.fish are hungry and searching then they "feel" a vibe of something swimming with them somewhere close by,,,what would said fish do?

I thought you made those with a lathe. Belt sander? How do you keep the roundness uniform?
well,I don't have space for a lathe and at work there is an old monster belt sander that they don't use.I use that and it works very well.
all one needs is a very sharp eye, which I have and the technique to spin the wood as it's shaving off the wood and it works great.
this sander is not a small one it is big and is bolted to the floor, the belt is 14 inches wide and about 12 inches tall.
once I get the shape I am after I smooth the final shape with sandpaper by hand[80 grit],I can feel the high spots[I mark them with a sharpie] which are few then I smooth it further with 200 grit.
sandpaper.
what you see here is about 99% perfect.

Just don't think I could cast them without breaking my rod and was wondering what kind of heavy duty setup you are using. thanksHi Porgy75,the top piece is not heavy at all,it is about 3 oz,the bottom one is heavier and it has to be around 4 or a touch more.
they are not wide bodied at all, they are on the slim side[for me],my other big swimmers will bust a rod that's not for heavy fishing though.most of what I fish is from 4-7 oz with some of them being 3 oz.
my heaviest is 8 oz.
my big sticks which I have 5 are rated anywhere from 2-6 or 3-8oz and range from 9 ft 10.
I am working on,,,slowly,an old daiwa regal surf rod that's glass and 11 feet, rated 4 oz,was a spinning rod but, will convert it to a winch rod.
got it for nothing and it's in decent shape.
should work out well.

Wow heavy stuff. You have to be using conventionals for your big stick rods. Those are MONSTER plugs. Hope you catch some monsters in size with them. winches are what I fish with exclusively, only use a spinner during the late fall when the air temp is in the high 30's.keeps the hands dry and warmer than wet hands from the casting reels.
any other time it's winch reels totally.
I do get large with them too and sometimes a 30 incher will slam the crap out of a large swimmer.guess they have big balls sometimes.
a large swimmer gets their attention, either they run away or they slam it.

A big thank you to Roddy (Rip-Plugger).
He sends me a plug I get yesterday (great surprise), it gets me my largest blue of the year so far this morning (~32 inches).
 Swims great.
