Marine waters laws get tricky for anglers fishing in the Long Island Sound

It's prime time for porgies in the western Long Island Sound.
So now it's appropriate to mention that anglers in Connecticut need a Marine Waters Fishing License. This requirement was signed into law and became effective July 1. A similar law for New York anglers has also been passed and will go into effect Oct.1.
Here's what is in store. First of all, anglers on board state-registered party and charter boats are not required to carry this license. It does apply to anglers fishing saltwater species from the state's shoreline or from private boats. That covers even scooping up bait fish. Blue claw crabs are an exception.
The year-long Connecticut license costs $10 for residents ages 16 to 64. For those 65 or older it's free but still must be obtained every calendar year. For non-residents age 16 or older, the fee is $15.
