Bunker chunks will usually tell you if the blues are in the area. If they won't hit bunker chunks then they are not thick. Have been seeing a lot of blues lately. Colder water will turn them off of artificials for a bit. They get sluggish.

Out Saturday morning for the Coastal Fly Rodders Annual One Fly Tournament (surf only).
We got into the bluefish pretty good on fly rods, I landed around 15 and missed/dropped just as many.
The spinning rod guys had them every cast (seems like the blues had a much easier time finding the bigger plugs over the smaller flies in the dirty water).
Ended up grabbing second place with 6 bluefish on my one fly before it became un-fishable.
After the tournament was over I went over to the boat to see if we could get some more bluefish just outside the marina. We were greeted by very dirty water but were still able to catch a couple on flies/plugs in 4-6ft of water.

That looks like a blast, congrats! I was curious about the fly, the chartreuse one that is four pics down. It doesn't look like much to it. Not trying to be critical but I didn't know they would hit something with that little hair on it?
Or is that what it looked like after they were beating up on it for awhile?
Great job on the fly.
Mon moco in the back from 7-11p. All blues and as mentioned they were a little picky. Got a few on bucktail and pork. And one small striper 23 inches just as I was getting ready to leave.
Nice bend in the rod! Congrats
I went to the back in Moco last night as well. Lots of people out and about. I must have had bad timing, I had one good hit on a bucktail, and dropped it. Will try again later on in the week. Tight lines everyone.
Had about 20 or so blues 3 to 8# all on metal
Three of us fished OC this afternoon. First spot we had a pick of bigger blues on bucktails. Moved to a second spot and it was a slow pick of smaller blues on metal and plugs.
Mad dog bite moco yesterday afternoon. In the back bay. All blues. Most were 10# and up. I was the first one there. By the end there were about 20 of us. All working together, no tangles. Metal, plugs and poppers. I left at high tide when the bite dropped off. Good times.
Out Sunday on the beach again landed 13 bluefish before I had to leave.

Of course Blaze and Basstard continued to beat the crap out of them after I left each almost hitting 50 fish each!
I think I got into a the same class of blues that you did last night, hook. Real tackle busters. Saw one guy bust his rod from high sticking. Metal and bucktail/pork combo worked best for me. Man these are some bruisers. Going home to rest my shoulder, back at it tomorrow. 6-8pm moco.
Found the gators tonight as well. Jigfreak we must of been fishing the same beach. I saw a guy bust a rod as well. Or maybe there are just a lot of rods getting busted out there. Gators and some smaller. 9-14 lbs. Metal at first and then SPs were the ticket. Long casts.
Congrats guys sounds like you really put a hammering on them. I went to the inlet in somoco where they were getting them. Tried the beach there from 5 to 7. One blue on a 2 oz ava. And I caught my first sea robin for the year. Still looking for Mr Striper. The water temp seems perfect.
Well lightning doesn't strike twice. Went back tonight looking for the gators again and got blanked.
I think they want bunker! I had some work in the area so I fished one of the beaches at LBI yesterday. Caught a nice blue about 15 pounds and two small stripers, All released. All on Bunker chunks in the afternoon.
Good job. I tried to get into some action before the storm last night. so monco by an inlet. 7-9. Was getting a little gnarly so I tossed a big bucktail with white grub. No love.
Had the same thought, skunk followed me home. Nomoco
Can't catch them from the couch! But that was where I hid last night, lol.:o
Dont feel bad. I watched TV for an hour before I was motivated enough to get out. You didn't miss much. Fished some structure in the back at high tide. First hour of outgoing. 2 blues to 30" on rubber. Very picky. About 500 casts for those 2 fish.
Seems very spotty. Meanwhile the boats are crushing big fish right out of reach. Will prob give it a shot tonight or tomorrow.
Got to throw out bunker and you will be rewarded. We were getting a lot of blues in the raritan. bunker chunks. Got to be too much so we moved ops to the Hudson. Pretty decent fishing but a lot of waiting around. Deep in the night. Up to 19lbs. Waiting for the bunker to set up for the next few months after the spawn and then the fishing will get better.
Except for Atlantic city chatter you arent hearing about it but every town in SNJ is jacked with Boofish. Unlike last year the mid sized are mixed in with the gators too. The pic doesn't capture it well but this one was over the 40" mark just as the heavy stuff came in friday night. My instincts tell me they have to go before a significant big bass run (outside raritan) I remember a time when spring was 1-3 lbers from land, nothing stays the same though Attachment 20930
^^^^^ I know, right! Who would have thought Atlantic and Cape May counties would have such great Monster blue fish right in front of us. I can't remember the last time this happened. Nice going. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.
I heard there was some great giant blue fish in upper Cape May County. So I went over there Friday night. But unlike shark heart, I was a sissy. I got one big blue fish on an SP, and the weather got too bad for me and I quit. 34 incher. I went back yesterday morning and had about 2 hours of good fishing. I was tossing two ounce Avas, blind casting, and they would come by every once in a while. There were a couple of other fishermen but not too many guys. Amazing bluefish action, especially for the bluefish starved people on SNJ.
I wonder what is keeping these fish around, anyone know?
Another quick story on other night a thick school of blues stayed in the trough until like the last minutes of receding tide, could feel lure going over the backs and another guy came running out of the water cause they hit his legs. A few got snagged by accident by all fishing. One of the ones i got on the dorsal was like a 10 lber. Oh Man I didnt think id ever get that fish in, with his head free Id nearly beach him and it 10" of water he would wiggle right back out, it looked like a comedy show Id try to grab the leader and fish would go back out, about the 6th try I got the leader
Haha I have done that. I oncehad a blue hooked behind the head and I thought I had the world record striper because it was staying down deep, which stripers usually do. It was about a 12-pounder but in my eyes I was going to be the next AL McReynolds. LOL, how quickly our dreams are shattered by reality.
Hit the moco tour last nite. 3 spots in the back looking for stripers or gators. Got the skunk. Dirty and windy.
this morning 5 to6:30
7bass to 27" and 2 bluefish all on jig and rubber tail
Nice going. We have fished the last three nights in the row, and only got one keeper striper out of all of that work. Can't wait for the waters to clean up a little.
WTG gentlemen. Was in nomoco last night and we had 2 cars coming home from Moms house. Wife had the kids and I had the fishing pole. Fished for an hour, got a nice blue on a bucktail. Heard the action is good at island beach today catch em up for me!
New push of bigger fish coming from the south. Will be out tonight.
Thanks for the reports. Got out last night in monco. It was windy, it seemed it was dying down a little bit from earlier in the day. Managed 2 blies on yellow SP. One 22", another 28".
I went out yesterday after work as well. Got to one spot nothing doing. Went to another one and it was low tide. Saw a few blues getting caught by guys wading. I got one on pencil popper, pretty good fight. I think it will get better this week with the warmer weather after the water cleans up. Will try to get out more.
Have been fishing up and down the beaches in rock piles of monmouth county from the sand. Also the river a few times. I had a great week of blue fish activity, blues up to 17 pounds, metal and plugs. That ended with the rain. Back to the bass fishing this morning. picked up three short stripers on bucktail and white grub. Fishing has been very hit-and-miss for me.
Did a quick trip this AM at sunrise. Poppers in the ocean. Managed a few big blues, dropped a few. May go back after work to see if they are still there. Near an inlet in monmouth.
My buddies have been catching gorilla blue's all week in Atlantic County except for when it rained. Sometimes I am totally jealous that I have to work every day.
Trolled up some slobs on Thursday with the smallest bass being 29# and biggest going 40#.
Half of my fish came on Spoon Fed bunker spoons and the other half came on Mojos.
All released to fight another day!
