Bunker chunks will usually tell you if the blues are in the area. If they won't hit bunker chunks then they are not thick. Have been seeing a lot of blues lately. Colder water will turn them off of artificials for a bit. They get sluggish.

Out Saturday morning for the Coastal Fly Rodders Annual One Fly Tournament (surf only).
We got into the bluefish pretty good on fly rods, I landed around 15 and missed/dropped just as many.
The spinning rod guys had them every cast (seems like the blues had a much easier time finding the bigger plugs over the smaller flies in the dirty water).
Ended up grabbing second place with 6 bluefish on my one fly before it became un-fishable.
After the tournament was over I went over to the boat to see if we could get some more bluefish just outside the marina. We were greeted by very dirty water but were still able to catch a couple on flies/plugs in 4-6ft of water.

That looks like a blast, congrats! I was curious about the fly, the chartreuse one that is four pics down. It doesn't look like much to it. Not trying to be critical but I didn't know they would hit something with that little hair on it?
Or is that what it looked like after they were beating up on it for awhile?
Great job on the fly.
Mon moco in the back from 7-11p. All blues and as mentioned they were a little picky. Got a few on bucktail and pork. And one small striper 23 inches just as I was getting ready to leave.
Nice bend in the rod! Congrats
I went to the back in Moco last night as well. Lots of people out and about. I must have had bad timing, I had one good hit on a bucktail, and dropped it. Will try again later on in the week. Tight lines everyone.
Had about 20 or so blues 3 to 8# all on metal
Three of us fished OC this afternoon. First spot we had a pick of bigger blues on bucktails. Moved to a second spot and it was a slow pick of smaller blues on metal and plugs.
Mad dog bite moco yesterday afternoon. In the back bay. All blues. Most were 10# and up. I was the first one there. By the end there were about 20 of us. All working together, no tangles. Metal, plugs and poppers. I left at high tide when the bite dropped off. Good times.
Out Sunday on the beach again landed 13 bluefish before I had to leave.

Of course Blaze and Basstard continued to beat the crap out of them after I left each almost hitting 50 fish each!
I think I got into a the same class of blues that you did last night, hook. Real tackle busters. Saw one guy bust his rod from high sticking. Metal and bucktail/pork combo worked best for me. Man these are some bruisers. Going home to rest my shoulder, back at it tomorrow. 6-8pm moco.
Found the gators tonight as well. Jigfreak we must of been fishing the same beach. I saw a guy bust a rod as well. Or maybe there are just a lot of rods getting busted out there. Gators and some smaller. 9-14 lbs. Metal at first and then SPs were the ticket. Long casts.
Congrats guys sounds like you really put a hammering on them. I went to the inlet in somoco where they were getting them. Tried the beach there from 5 to 7. One blue on a 2 oz ava. And I caught my first sea robin for the year. Still looking for Mr Striper. The water temp seems perfect.
Well lightning doesn't strike twice. Went back tonight looking for the gators again and got blanked.
I think they want bunker! I had some work in the area so I fished one of the beaches at LBI yesterday. Caught a nice blue about 15 pounds and two small stripers, All released. All on Bunker chunks in the afternoon.
Good job. I tried to get into some action before the storm last night. so monco by an inlet. 7-9. Was getting a little gnarly so I tossed a big bucktail with white grub. No love.
Had the same thought, skunk followed me home. Nomoco
Can't catch them from the couch! But that was where I hid last night, lol.:o
