I didn't see any bunker around. Some birds were working a good 150+ yards out, but I think they were onto something small.
Never came within casting range.

You guys have prob already seen the reports but a heads up anyway that the bigger bass have arrived in Montauk. Spent a few hours on my buddys boat last night drifting eels at the Rip. We got 6 bass to 37 lbs and kept two smalller ones for the table.
Nice going strikezone. Especially letting the bigger ones go. Fished out east last night. 2 teen bass and a few blues on swimmers. released
Fished out east this morning 2:15-7:30.
Only managed 1 short bass on a Howdy.
Had more action on top, just could not bury the hook :beatin:
Great time, lake like conditions.

Nice report monty beautiful sunrise. At least you caught. I fished jones 2x this week and nothing. Might have to go further east.
Gotta hand it to Monty....for all the effort he's putting in......because he wants to learn new areas.....and it's tough....
Eventually all that hard work will pay off.....
Good luck pal...I'm praying you get rewarded by the fish of your dreams. :HappyWave:
Thanks guys, I'm just happy to be able to get out there and fish when I can, catch or no catch, its great being out there.
I try to make each trip memorable in some way, whether its new water, find a dead thing, walking 20 miles while fishing with a friend, catching, learning, whatever, just give each outing a 100% and have fun, get something out of the trip. And I'm lucky in that I do have fun each trip, catch or no catch.
Hey having fun is part of the deal. Nice report and pic thanks for sharing.
Testing a few plugs this morning 1 bass 25" nada after that.
Nice going didn't think there were any schoolies left.
Me either I was just tuning some metal lips then switched to another new plug I made to try it out and what the hell do you know a fish miracles do happen
Nice catch surfstix. I have given up on catching bass. Seems like there has to be a lot of bait in the surf to catch them. I fished breezy twice in the last week and didn't do so great. Picked up some fluke on gulp and bucktail they were all shorts. This morning I tried from 5-7. The south wind was blowing in my face and it was hard to cast. Got zilch, Did see a nice sunrise.
They come when they come they are finicky fish, the numbers are way down it is not that easy anymore its going to take a few years of good management which we don't have or a moratorium to gets things straightened out.
don't lose all hope yet fellas. Fished the incoming tide last nite. Jones area. One small fluke and 2 short stripers on bucktail and pork with a small white teaser about 18" above.
Fished out east this morning from 2:15 to 8:30.
Ended up with the skunk.
Was a lot of weeds in the water, almost every cast was messed up. Got somewhat better as the tide went out.
Should have made a major move after a few casts but stuck it out and walked a lot of beach.
Had a fish on a red fin but lost it in close around 5:00.:beatin:
Then missed a couple hits on a Howdy around 7:30.
Knucklehead...
Looking forward to next Sunday AM already.
Nice going. The weeds on the south shore are pretty bad on the outgoing. I haven't fished in 2 weeks because of them. I might wait till sept when the peanut bunker start to show up. Looking forward to a good sandeel run too. Thanks for the report.
Headed east and started fishing 2:30 this morning. Normal start for me. New area for me and a few casts and missed a hit on a redfin/teaser. Decided to head a few miles west after an hour and half and try another new spot and around 4:30 had a Hogy bit in half. Sun came up and found blues rolling and cutting through bait about 150 yards out.
Finally a bit of luck....good luck.
They would move up and down the beach and between 40 an 200 yards the next 2 hours.
Ended up landing 7 and loosing 5 (was 4 for 4 at one point :kooky:).
Loooongs casts and they liked the Green Ava 17, until tube was ripped off. They would not hit a red Ava. Got 6 on the green Ava and 1 on an Epoxy jig, which I lost when a blue cut through the 80 lb leader. Could not get them to hit a popper until 8:30 when I was into the biggest one, which I lost when it straightened the tail hook (typical) :beatin:.
Had a great time, only one other guy came by and fished near me for about 20 minutes and left when he could not hook up.
I really enjoy hooking up with blues this size and its always a bonus if its ocean side. Was crazy lucky running into them, great fun with a nice bend in the rod.

Nice find!!! What was the tail hook that failed on you?
Was a dressed VMC 9171PS, 3x I think a 3/0, to small. Wondering if the 4/0 closed 9170 are significantly stronger.
I have been looking at the and have been thinking they should be bigger/stronger.
Speaking of hooks, looking for one I can tie a bit of bucktail on and attach to metal. For Albie metal, ones I have 9171PS in the size are not very strong, thinking 1/0 and its pretty thin.
The open eye (9171) and closed eye (9170) are the same wire gauge and strength. The only difference is the eye position they are shipped with.
Do you have 4/0 and 5/0s? The 3/0s are much thinner gauge.
