Well even though we knew it was over especially after yesterdays marathon we gave it a try and nada this morning, pretty much unfishable no signs of any life including birds. Lots of dead jelly fish all over the place probably from the quick drop in water temp.
No offense maybe the ocean temps are 42 in cape cod but they were a little warmer than that where I was last night. Picked up a few more runts. They are getting smaller and smaller tho. Bucktail and white grub. Want to get some fishing in before the noreaster and possible snow shoots everything to hell. Water wasn't that bad, except for the swell. Had to time your casts. Didn't see anyone else out there. Good luck fellas.
Way to go out there and try. I like that idea about fishing before a north east storm. Doesn't seem to be much out there at all looking at all the fishing reports on the net. Good that you were able to find some. Watch out that someone doesn't put a GPS tracking device on you!
What about the herring have they all gone too?
I have been out a few times, latest this morning. Skunk a roonie for me. HS congrats on finding a few. I think it's like finding a needle in a haystack right now. In OC and island beach the bigger fish have disappeared from the surf. As mentioned the conditions aren't that bad. Just could not find a fish this morning. May try the night after the storm if it isn't that bad. As for the herring they are still around in my area. I was out yesterday too and saw the gannetts diving. Way too far out to cast. No party boats are fishing for bass so if they were there most would not know. I definitely feel they are thinning out. Should have gotten one or two this morning. Still, anytime you can get out in January and fish comfortably its a good day.
I took it today on a very accurate river thermometer designed by fish pond for salmon fishing was 43 today south of Manasquan inlet the Gambler gave up no fish for 3 days he had 44 degrees. This week temps are not going over 40 degrees
Hookset there is ice coming down the Manasquan believe me I don't want it to end but the end except for a few rats with this weeks temps that should do it. The picture came from a friend who took the temp by shark river inlet
Fished moco this morning. Surf is cleaning up but still some white water and pockets of dirty water. Nothing for me. Nice and sunny out there, good walk on the beach and exercise.
Nada this morning water holding at 43degrees on my thermometer and verified here

So IMO
finchaser is the last one standing. Thanks for the report. Was still hoping that with the herring there would be a few stripers.
I'm still fishing too. There are some around feeding on crabs. Its getting too cold and 42 is usually the limit for me catching on artificials. Know an older guy who is still getting them on clams but no keepers. Went out last night, cold as hell. Only gave it 15 minutes. Blanked. The surf is beautiful and serene lately. No one is fishing even for herring. Lots of space and solitude. Unfortunately each day the weather gets colder and the ones that still are around will get lockjaw. Unless you use clams on a sunny day. Then you might get a keeper.
Nothing on the island either. Been out twice this week and skunko. Did not try clams tho. In the past I have and they would work until the water temps hit around 40.
Good luck out there gents. Like hookset said there is not much to write home about. If you are going stir crazy tho it is not bad weather to get out on a sunny day. At least you will get some exercise and burn off some of the winter fat. Keep hope alive.
Gave it the ol college try this morning. Beautiful morning, nice clean water, a little to flat though. Nothing, may try later on in the afternoon.
Tried this morning found some herring in the 41 degree water but no fish or birds. Even 2 snot slingers went totally bite less so I decided to pack it in no warm temps after tomorrow so IMO
