What are some of the unconventional techniques you have used or seen used?
Porgy, first one that comes to mind is a guy using a double shad rig when the surf had 4' waves crashing on the beach. That didn't work because the fish were out further and you can't get casting distance with a rig like that. Metal was the ticket that day, and the furthest casts got the fish. As told by OGB.
Bunker head on a Hopkins:
The 2nd recent one is when I ran into Roger, his Dad, and their 2 friends one afternoon in Ocean county this fall. They had bunker heads and huge bunker chunks on their Hopkins metals as they threw them out to wait for strikes.
I thought they were nuts, and they were, but in a good way. :HappyWave:
Big blues, and some bass, had big schools of bunker pinned tight to the beach. The only thing they wanted was meat, and these guys figured it out. They were catching while everyone else was "watching".
Here's the story of their day:

Moral of the story?
Don't judge what someone else is using or doing unless you're sure ;) it won't work.
If you want to catch small bass schooled up in a harbor or near a dock, try throwing a sabiki rig with a small rubber curly tube jig when the herring are around. You will get the herring and also maybe a surprise bass.
This Kid i fish with has great luck with a Polaris popper at night. He is always catching fish on his polaris popper at night? Never would have figured? But he does very well with it. I think he is on here at times.
The other unconventional item I have used int he past is tin at night. Not my original idea but Toss a tin at night on sand beaches and jig it like a bucktail popping sand off the bottom and wait for the hit on the drop or on the initial pick up.
Pensil poppers can be very effective at night with an erratic retrieve. What works for me is to stop or slow them down after some fast action, you will sometimes get that strike right before you start up again.
^^ Very good. That is an old secret technique. When I first started fishing the old timers did that from the bridges.
Anyone ever try a live eel with a small sluggo on top?
Rockhopper, I'm sorry that no one answered this, and I just saw it. Fishing live eels requires concentration so they don't ball up on you. Respectfully, the technique you're describing is a recipe for disaster. Too much can go wrong, and it just doesn't make sense to me. Hope that helped. :HappyWave:
Sent in by Rip-Plugger, thanks!
1.wanna fish a bucktail waay out and not worry about hitting bottom?,,
2. how about being able to sling a sluggo out to nearly or at 100 yards or
more?,,
3. what about fishing a large streamer fly waay out and having no problem
getting out there 300 feet?
well heres how you can do it!
what I do is use my tried/true dangle method, thats right I said dangle
damn it!
a. Take a tennis ball and drill a 1/16th hole through both sides of it.
b. Take your leader[I like 30 inches-5 feet long]and tie a barrel swivel on
one end.
c. Take a bait needle and tie it to the other end.
d. Push the bait needle through the tennis ball pull the leader through
till the barrel hits the tennis ball.
e. At the other side of the tennis ball cut the leader leaving more than
enough to tie on another barrel swivel.
f. Tie another barrel swivel onto the bottom of the tennis ball.
g. Now,all you have to do is tie on a bucktail, sluggo or small jig using
your choice of leader length to fish waay out with ease. as I do,I like
to put on a 3/4-1 oz smiling bill and sling it out,let it drift waay out
there and then either employ my "do nothing method" or work it back
slowly.
h. This really works well with a 8 inch saltwater assassin sea-shad,I like
to have 4 feet of leader and do nothing waay out or slowly bring it
in,they really whack the **** outta it!
thats the H-H Dangle method *****!
act like ya heard me,,,,,
ya that one is slow sinking, you can pop it, v wake it(which i was doing when i caught that) and let it sink and just slow retrieve wiggle back to the surface. great bluefish plug too. durable
I used it today to fish an area that the shoreline is steep and private property.
I stood on the bridge and slung it out, drifted it out about 180 yards[diaw firewolf rod,glass,9.5 feet/ming-Yang CL-70 loaded with 290 yards of 30 mono] and let it slide to the left and hang it slacker water during the last 2 hrs of flooding tide.8 feet of 50 mono and a 6 inch sea shad.had 6 hits landed 4 fish, school size but it allowed me to fish an area that you only can fish by boat AND my car is 6 feet away from my back.
reel up,rod away and hop in and go.

I think you should patent that dangle fishing method RP. Then you could package it with some new plug or lure designed around it and sell it on an infomercial, you could get rich.
Or, it could end up as fill on the late night TV commercials. Hey you never know.:d
Dressing tins, when throwing tins in the fall surf, sometimes it's not needed to cast very far. When the conditions are that way, if I have a single hook on my tin I'll put a bucktail on it, or a white grub. Sometimes that's the ticket for getting the fish to hit it. You do lose some distance, so only do it if the fish are in close.
Thanks dogfish I'lll have to try that.
I think you should add the clambrella, clamzilla, and fishing window weights from the beach to some of these conventional tactics.:d

Dark, you should really consider putting some of these in a "best of' forum so we can find them in the winter.
^ Steve, funny suggesstions....if we ever take this show on the road. I'm, designating you as the Promo Dude.... :HappyWave:

Here are some more techniques that I came across the other night, and I hope it's all right with Mike O to share them with you guys. Remember, this is old-skool, and when the guys who fish this way aren't around any longer, some of it may be lost for good.......
Because most dudes don't want to work for fish.Quote:

If I came out with a plug tomorrow, rattles and erratic swimming, had it available in 100 crazy colors, had some of the surf guys show pics of it catching 30 lb fish, and said you dont even have to work this plug, just reel, I could probably clean up and sell thousands. Guys are always looking for the next best thing. The old school things you talk about here are some of the best because they have been working for decades. Ex - drifting worms on a float for weakfish or bass, almost always gives up fish even in the hottest months. But how many guys are on the forums saying they caught fish this way? Or bucktailing on the bottom of an inlet or river, another sure fire way to get uninterested fish to hit. How many ae doing that.
It's always the next best thing, that is going to catch the fish. What folks don't realize is the next best thing has been available at the tackle shop, since tackle shops first opened their doors.
Great stuff here. Your righrt hookset, no one wants to work for the fish. Take crabbing its a lot of work. The end result is catching that fish that will bend your rod. Definitely worth it.

Some fish I've been getting at night....mostly blues to 7#,,,and one bass.
The bass hooked in the back wasn't an accident....I also got a bluefish in the back like that....they were feeding on small bait....it seemed they kept missing it as the strikes were more reactionary than aggressive...
Most of my rear hooks have been changed to singles for ease of release and minimal injury.....
Unfortunately that one bluefish hit so awkwardly he got stuck in the eye....I took some time to get that hook out, so hopefully he wasnt blinded.

** One of the most effective ways to get these fish to hit, is to "tease" them with poppers at night, almost forcing them to hit.
You hit on an old school technique dark skies. When I was younger you could not buy poppers and fancy lures. We used to wade the flats at night and toss out pieces of cork floats with bbs stuck into them to make them heavier. Then we would carve slots and indentations on the front part to make them gurgle. Put a heavy leader through it attached to a hook buried partly in the cork. We would throw them out and try to tease the fish into hitting. You would be surprised at the kinds of fish we caught doing that. We would catch bluefish, small stripers and the occasional weakfish. The key is the presentation as you are finding out. You brought back memories with your report. Keep up the good work. Us older folk who can't get out as much enjoy them.
nice tips guys thanks for sharing.
