Passengers rescued from burning deep sea fishing boat

A deep sea fishing boat loaded with three dozen people caught fire this morning in the waters off Plymouth and was evacuated, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a report at about 8:30 a.m. of an engine fire on the vessel Capt. John & Son, which had 28 passengers and eight crew members. The boat was about six miles off the Gurnet Lighthouse in Plymouth.

The passengers were transported to a sister ship and transferred to a whale watching boat, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Lauren Jorgensen. The deep sea fishing trip was supposed to finish up around 3 p.m., according to Capt. John Boats Inc. in Plymouth, which owns Capt. John & Son.

Jorgensen said the fire was put out. It is being towed in by another sister ship and escorted by a Coast Guard vessel, Jorgensen said.
No injuries were reported.

Capt. John & Son is owned by Stanley Tavares, according to an employee who answered the phone at Capt. John Boats Inc. in Plymouth.

Disabled Fishing Boat Safely Moored

BOSTON - A 44-foot fishing boat carrying four people that was previously disabled and adrift about 60 miles southeast of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is now safely moored in South Portland, Maine.
The 210-foot Coast Guard Cutter Dependable, from Cape May, N.J., towed the Maria and Dorothy to the entrance of Portland Harbor. There, the tow was passed to a boat from Coast Guard Station South Portland and the Maria and Dorothy was brought to the pier, where it moored at 11:30 p.m., Monday.
The crew of the Maria and Dorothy reported to Sector Northern New England in South Portland about 12 a.m., Monday that they were experiencing engine problems and needed help.
