Nelson's Sealord Group has been fined $38,000 over an incident on a fishing vessel where a crew member's fingers were sliced off.
The Nelson man was working on the vessel Rehua last year when he lost four fingers, although two were successfully reattached.

Maritime New Zealand spokesman Ross Henderson says the sentencing and fine, which included $25,000 in reparation to the man, is appropriate. He says it highlights the need for health and safety procedures to cover any activity that someone might be carrying out on a ship.

Mr Henderson says the company has since implemented new health and safety procedures.
