Default Local NJ small business spotlight -- Surf Side Tackle, Long Branch

(Thanks to DarkSkies for suggesting this tackle shop, and helping with the details)

The NJ spotlight for October will be on:

Surf Side Bait and Tackle Shop

    29 Montgomery Ave
    Long Branch, NJ 07740

    (732) 222-4436

Hours: 7am - 7pm 7 days a week. Call if you're in the area and the bite is hot; he may be fishing.

    Background:
Owned & operated by Jack Monteiro. Also staffed by Kevin.

He has been in business since July of 2007. I have not yet had a chance to meet him, but I understand Jack is an avid fisherman. He is allegedly well-regarded by many fishing club members, and has a 250 lb capacity certified scale.

He offers a selection of custom plugs, and a full line of Gibbs, Superstrike, and DT lures.

I understand they also repair and re-spool reels as well.

Business Edge: "We build Lamis and custom Calcutta gaffs."

    Rods and Gaffs:
Jack has a selection of premium Calcutta bamboo up to 19' long. He can craft a custom heavy-duty gaff to any size you need, and takes great pride in his work. After he is done putting the components together, he applies a few layers of thick epoxy to the gaff head so it will never unravel. Normal gaff sizes range from 5-10', but Jack will make a gaff of any length or thickness desired. He also applies cork wrap to the butt of the gaff for comfort and durability.

Additionally, he is involved in building custom rods from Lamiglass blanks - any size required - surf, bridge, or boat rods.

If you are considering having a custom rod or gaff built, why not stop in Jack's shop, ask him some questions and take a look at some of the excellent work he has done.

    Premium Bait:
How many times have you gone to a shop and bought a flat of sandworms, only to find many worms that look anemic, are tiny, and generally unappealing?

The pic Jack sent us of his sandworms shows fat juicy worms that any bass or weakfish would be glad to commit suicide for. Jack suppposedly pays more for this premium bait because he wants to bring in the best for his customers.

He also sells eels and clams, but the worms take the cake!

For any small businesses out there that want to be included in our "Small Business of the Month" promos, contact me for details -- bunkerjoe
