About 2,500 Atlantic salmon have escaped from a Vancouver Island fish farm, the second incident involving a Mainstream Canada operation in a little more than a year.
The company said the fish escaped into Clayoquot Sound, on the island's west coast, last Thursday after an incident involving a harvesting boat.
Mainstream Canada spokeswoman Laurie Jensen said the fish escaped while a boat was harvesting fish from the company's Mussel Rock farm, and the company was still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
"It was faulty equipment," Jensen told Westcoaster.ca."We're just doing an investigation into the who, what, how, where, when."
Jensen said the company suspended harvesting operations after the incident and notified provincial and federal officials, as well as the Ahousaht First Nation's fish farm committee.
