HIGHLANDS — The body of a man was recovered in the Shrewsbury River Monday by State Police and may be that of area fisherman Edward Broderick, 38, who went missing Dec. 14 after his clamming boat sank.
State Police Sgt. Brian Polite, a spokesman for State Police, told the Asbury Park Press, “The body was spotted by passing fishermen in the late afternoon.”
Meanwhile, an autopsy performed Sunday on remains found a day earlier at Gateway National Recreation Area’s Sandy Hook unit determined that they were not human, Polite said.
On Monday afternoon, the man’s body was brought to the Gateway Marina, here. Police did not have a clothing description, and said the body was in a state of decomposition.
The State Police Marine Unit, Crime Scene Investigators and State Police detectives were at the scene Monday afternoon, Polite said.
The man’s body was taken by the Monmouth County Medical Examiner’s Office, and an autopsy is planned, he said.
“The medical examiner’s examination will be sometime tomorrow,” Polite said.
State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Broderick’s disappearance.
Broderick’s friend Capt. Scott Hilliard said previously that he believes Broderick’s commercial vessel flipped in the Navesink River.
Hilliard owns the Prowler V, a party boat docked in Atlantic Highlands. He said Broderick worked on deck for him, on and off for the last five or six years. He also acted as second captain on overnight tuna fishing trips.
“We are really in shock about this. Everyone is saddened,” Hilliard said. “I feel horrible for his family. He had a 7-year-old daughter.”
According to authorities, Broderick was last heard from around 6 p.m. Dec. 14 after he told a friend that his vessel was heading to a clamming facility in Highlands.
The friend reported him missing about four hours later, and Broderick’s submerged vessel was found outside the marina where he originally intended to end his trip.
Hilliard said Broderick always was safe with the boat, so the fact that it sunk has him puzzled.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook spent most of that weekend searching for Broderick, along with the state marine police and a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City.
The search for Broderick had been suspended Dec. 17 because of the winter weather, police said.
Authorities are investigating whether Broderick’s boat collided with another craft, police said.
The submerged vessel was removed from the waters where it was discovered near the Captain Cove Marina in Highlands, which also is where Broderick was expected to be headed, authorities said.
When the sunken boat was discovered, rescuers went into the water and checked inside the boat’s cabin to be certain that Broderick was not trapped inside the vessel, Grossman said.

HIGHLANDS : The body found pulled from the water at the Captain?s Cove Marina Friday has been positively identified as that of missing clammer Edward Broderick, 39, of Sea Bright, said State Trooper Jeff Flynn.

According to authorities, Broderick was last heard from around 6 p.m. after he told a friend that his vessel was heading to a clamming facility in Highlands.
    OBITUARY: Edward John Broderick Jr.
The friend reported him missing about four hours later, and Broderick?s submerged vessel was found outside the Captain's Cove Marina, where he originally intended to end his trip.
Broderick worked off and on for Capt. Scott Hilliard, owner of the Prowler V, a party boat docked in Atlantic Highlands, who was very fond of him, he said in previous interviews.
"We are really in shock about this. Everyone is saddened," Hilliard said at the time of his disappearance. "I feel horrible for his family. He had a 7-year-old daughter."
