CURRITUCK Co., N.C. - A 60-year-old man who disappeared while swimming in the Outer Banks died from a shark attack, Currituck County officials told WAVY.com.

A vacationer out for an early morning walk in Kill Devil Hills Thursday morning, discovered a man's body washed ashore.
The body was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office where they later discovered the man died of injuries sustained from a shark bite.

The Medical Examiner's Office identified the body as that of 60-year-old Richard Snead of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Snead disappeared after going for a late night swim on September 12. Officials say Snead went missing from the 500 blk. of Conch Crescent in Corolla, North Carolina; he was swimming near mile post 4 1/2.

The Currituck County Sheriff's Office says they are not closing down beaches in light of the attack. Officials are just reminding swimmers to be alert in the water and to be aware that this incident occurred while swimming after dark. There are no recorded incidents of anyone sustaining a shark bite while swimming off the beaches of Currituck County since 2000.
The victim in the 2000 case was a young girl swimming in the waters on Pine Island in Currituck County. She survived the attack.
