Default Raritan Bay Anglers Club flea market 1/31/09

Went to the flea market today to check it out, had some good conversations, met some cool people. A little history about the club:

They originally started as the Perth Amboy Boat Owners, and somewhere along the line changed to the RBAC. Great group of guys, they used to hold the flea market in the Knights of Columbus. As the show got bigger, they moved to St Cecilia's Lourdes Hall in Iselin, NJ, where this year they had the main hall, and 2 other rooms.

The place had over 90 tables with all kinds of stuff. From new to old, there was something for everyone. They had some decent food available from the kitchen, and everyone who came had a good time. They also gave you a raffle ticket when you came in, and were raffling off something every 15 minutes, with 50/50 tickets also available.

The guys running the show said they had over 500 people walk through the doors today. I believe it, there were a lot of people in and out of that place. With the 2 big rooms it was easy to walk around, look at the stuff, and not feel crowded.

Mick, I'm on the want mo' money, have no money, budget.

Only spent $20 for the whole day, at both shows. That's barely believable, because I was everywhere I went, especially at the custom plug builder tables. Those guys do amazing things with wood, it was cool to meet so many great people. There were some great deals on used reels and stuff too.

Most of the pics looked terrible after I resized them, really sucks. No way do they capture the size and excitement of the halls and the day. Sorry people. I did this in a hurry and will have to do better next time.

Originals are much clear, bigger, and don't have anyone's head cut off! Anyone who wants copies of the originals, e-mail me with the title of the one you want and I'll send one out to ya. Most originals are around 1.7MB.

    some pics:

Chumbucket was there with ArnieP. 2 good guys, they have the same table every year, right near the front. Stop down and see them next year. They sell used tackle and some other stuff. There were none of chumbucket's custom plug creations for me to take pics of, but the guy is legendary.

He's a wizard with an airbrush, and a good fisherman. Nice meeting you guys again.

This pic shows him with Doug "Dr Lures & Supplies" who was at the table next to him.

    Doug "Dr Lures & Supplies"

Man, this guy knows his fishing, and his hot rods, and muskies. If you wanna get an education about any of the above, or just have some laughs BSin, stop by his table when you see him at one of the shows. He's got thousands of stories, ya can't get bored listening to em.

He sells these HD big bass spinnerbaits for $5, can't beat the price. I've been lookin for some spinners that would hold up to brutal saltwater beatings from bigger fish. I got some musky spinners a while back to use for stripers, but they ain't that sturdy. These look like they fit the bill, can't wait to throw one in the surf or rips.

heres the spinner I got from Doug.
Mick, this and one plug from Ace baits was the only thing I bought all day. I'm amazed I could hold out walking past all that stuff.

People, I never went to this flea market before, and was impressed. There were tons of bargains, lots of used reels in good shape.

Also met a cool guy name the Rod Doctor at one of the tables. He doesn't do custom rods anymore, but sells verything else. He'll be at all the shows and flea markets in the tri state area, give his table a look when you run into him.

On the way out, the last person I ran into was the Dad of one of my fishin idols. Ain't gonna embarass the guy too much, but the Dad and his son could probably outfish any club combined, they have tons of knowledge, are great people to talk to, funny as hell, and generous about sharing what they know and helping others. Cool meeting ya, "Mr R".

It was a great ending to that leg of the trip.
