Default Striped Bass weight estimation chart

Striped Bass Length - Age - Weight Chart

This chart is based on catch records in the Northeast. Its overall accuracy is good, especially in the Fall. Weights in the Spring months are generally lower. Most fish above 40 pounds are females.

Default Striped Bass Length to Weight Chart

    Found this on the net:

Striped Bass Length to Weight Chart
    A = length and B = girth

Bass - Pike - sunfish - walleye length to weight formula is on page bottom
Striped Bass Length to Weight Chart
Age - Weight - length chart
This chart is to approximate the weight and age of your striper
    Length X length X length /
    1,950
Striped Bass length to weight to Age Chart

    Striped Bass growth statistics
( New England - Chesapeake bay studies)

    Age Your Fish
Notes: Average size is just the median of both weights. It is more realistic maximum in the
late fall after the striper has fattened itself up for the winter. Feeding will slow
when water temperature drops below 50 degrees, so in the spring
the minimum weights are then more accurate. This of course
does not apply to a roe laden female. There has been much discussion
about the varients in weights. There are many factors that
contribute to weight or lack there of. A good digital flat scale will put less
stress on the fish than than those lip grip types and are more accurate.
A measurement should be taken while the fish is on a flat surface from the tip of the nose to
the outer most point of the tail.
There is no substitute for an accurate scale but to estimate the weight
of your striped bass the formula is thus.

    Length X length X length /
    1,950.
For example: a 30 inch striped bass weighs ~ 14 pounds
    30" X 30" X 30" /
    1,950 = 14

Use your calculater and the above formula for a fair approximation Margin of error up to 6%
The Formula for following species is thus
    Bass weight = (length x length x girth) / 1,200
    pike weight = (length x length x length) / 3,500
    sunfish weight = (length x length x length) / 1,200
    trout weight = (length x girth x girth) / 800
    walleye weight = (length x length x length) / 2,700
    For example, you catch a 16 inch walleye. Using the formula for walleye above: (16 x 16 x 16) / 2,700 = 1.5
pounds. Your walleye weighs approximately 1.5 pounds.

Cool. This is what I always used when out there:
    Length x girth x girth\ divided by 800 = weight

Your chart looks more accurate, thanks for posting.

    Default Growth of striper

What is the average amount a striper grows in a year? Do younger ones grow more than older ones?

According to the chart above, they grow about 1-2 inches per year. As they get older, the growth rate seems to slow a bit. That makes sense with the fish I caught, and also depends on the baitfish stocks they're feeding on. I remember getting one with a tag once. I sent it in and checked out the info. It pretty much conformed to that chart.

    How to: knot tying 101?

Whenever you start a thread where you are addressing the beginners out there or looking for information helpful to the beginners, please try to follow this format in your title if feasible.

As we start to develop articles and posts where our members are sharing their knowledge with other members, other good ideas can work as well:

    How I did it:

    How it's done:

    How to: (without the 101)

________ __________ ______ 101 (used to designate a thread designed to teach others at the most basic level)

The goal is to make things easy to find here. Some of you have already adopted this format, after my persuasive PMs, thank you.

Internet searching is frustrating when you get 10 pages of info on one topic -- and 9 of those pages are useless or contain scant info. I am trying to eliminate that here, and allow our members to search our growing database with less aggravation. Whomever has other ideas for topics and outlines to help simplify our searches, feel free to contact me. Thank you. bunkerjoe

Also, if you can remember, please try to give your POSTS a title as well when you can think of a topic to title them as. This is helpful for search engines and when members are using the search feature to find info on a specific topic. Thanks so much to all the members for any extra effort you can make to help us with this.

    Default Swell info

Vpass sent in a great link about the swell. This is critical to your fishing experience this time of year with the colder water. A short duration and big swell, and you could get washed out to sea.

Those who are still fishing now, or fishing cold water in the Spring would be well-advised to check it out every time before they go out there....thanks Vpass!

Good idea finchaser. I found a chart for blackfish. One thing I would add is that with the fish I have caught females of the same length tend to weigh slightly different from males.

    Size:
The Tautog is a slow growing, long-lived species with individuals over 30 years of age having been reported. Larval growth rates have been estimated to be between 0.01 and 0.03 inches per day. Young of the year juveniles grow during the summer at a rate of around 0.02 inches per day. Juvenile growth rates have been observed to be higher in vegetated than in unvegetated habitats.

Average length after the first summer of growth is 2.9 inches; 6.1 inches after the second summer of growth. Adult growth is relatively slow and varies with the season. Adult male tautog grow faster in length than adult females. A reasonably accurate guide to tautog length at age is provided in the table to the right.
