Search conducted for Shrewsbury River kayaker

By CAROL GORGA WILLIAMS • STAFF WRITER • November 17, 2010

LITTLE SILVER — A multi-jurisdictional search was under way late Wednesday night for a man who did not return from kayaking in the Shrewsbury River.

Authorities were focusing their efforts in the area around Seven Bridges Road and Little Silver Point Road.

First Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr. said his office was advised of the search about 8 p.m. As that office is not involved in search-and-rescue operations, it would only respond if the search turned deadly.

"There is a search for a missing kayaker that is under way," said Warshaw, acknowledging the kayaker began his outing earlier Wednesday afternoon. "There is substantial effort under way to try to locate a kayaker."

Searchers worked through the afternoon and evening as higher than usual winds were reported in the area.

Authorities know the identity of the missing person but would not release it.

    Police had no further information

They still didn't fiind him. I can't believe some of the comments people are making about him on the news blogs. They say he was in good shape, but they found the kayak, his pfd, and cell phone, and no signs of him yet.
Thoughts and prayers for his recovery, let's pray they find him alive hidden away somewhere.

    POLICE IDENTIFY MISSING KAYAKER

State Police have identified a Tinton Falls man as the Shrewsbury River kayaker who’s been missing since Wednesday, and will continue to search for him “for the foreseeable future,” said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a spokesman.
The department, along with area volunteer fire departments, have been searching the river for David Civile, 36 26, since late Wednesday. The Coast Guard, which had been assisting in the search, has since called off its operation, Sgt. Dan White, also of the State Police, said.
All agencies suspended the search for Civile at about 10:30p Wednesday night, and resumed it again first thing this morning, Jones said.
In addition to a surface search up and down the Shrewsbury and surrounding waters, Jones said police boats are using sonar “to spot any evidence at the bottom.”
“There is a very wide area to continue this surface search,” he said.
Jones would not say what the chances of survivability are in these conditions — the water temperature was 53 degrees Thursday afternoon, he said, “which is very cold.”
“The good thing is most of the water is shallow, so maybe the better (outside) temperature days will help,” White said.
Authorities were first notified that Civile was missing around 8p last night when his kayak was found near the uninhabited Sedge Island, which lies between Sea Bright and Rumson on the Shrewsbury River.
Jones said a number of factors could determine how long police continue to search for Civile, so he would not place any timeframe on the operations.
“We’ll just continue the search with the resources available for the foreseeable future right now,” he said.

I don't mean to criticize what others have said here or in the internet comments. I know the wind was more than brutal that day. I might have bailed on a trip with the wind that strong. (And thanks for the phone calls and PMs, guys)However, I've been in the Western Sound, JBay and SI in rough conditions when I knew fish were around and could find a lee from the wind.

We all make choices in life that might not be optimal. In the case of Dave, he was an experienced yakker in good condition. The current in those rivers leading to the twin rivers runoff at the Highlands bridge can be intense.

But...the back area where he allegedly was isn't really that bad. An experienced yakker like him might have decided to find a lee from the wind back there and give fishing a shot. Obviously, something happened which caused him to lose control, and in this case his choices are looked at and judged as wrong or foolish. I think if you know that river system well, you might agree that there are shallow places tucked in way in the back where he was, that don't present a danger if you have the right gear and clothing. The bottom line is we may never know exactly what went down, unless he appears to tell about it.

And without being critical, just want to echo some of the comments here that no fish is worth is. If you have doubts about launching on a particular day, listen to your inner wisdom and pay attention to those doubts, you may just save yourself from a lot of grief.

I hope he will be found. With each passing day it seems as if finding him alive is less likely. Still, if I were his family I wouldn't give up hope till the end. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

I think you are right about him being found alive. It doesn't look good. Just the same it's good to keep a positive outlook, for his family's sake.

Missing kayaker ID'd as 26-year-old from Tinton Falls

    LITTLE SILVER
    — State Police said they will resume Friday morning the search for a 26-year-old Tinton Falls man who was reported missing after he went kayaking on the Shrewsbury River Wednesday.
David Civile embarked on the kayak amid windy conditions Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Search and rescue boat crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, State Police, TowBoat US and local fire departments had initially focused their efforts Wednesday in the area around Seven Bridges Road and Little Silver Point Road.

The search resumed again Thursday morning but failed to locate Civile by Thursday evening, State Police said.

Dark, you made a good point there. Some of the people reading the story have no idea what that area looks like back there. I think they assume he was kayaking an inlet or something. The 7 bridges road area is pretty open and not as dangerous as the rest of the river. There are quite a few flats there, it's all tidal. Even in the channels there is not much current that far in the back unless you're dealing with a new or full moon. I think we're between cycles right now.
    Hoping for his recovery.

IMO no body in there right mind should be out alone in this weather especially with water temperatures where there at.

Pay attention to what history has taught us or be prepared to relive it again

Default Organized search for the missing kayaker

For anyone who wants to help, his family has organized a search tomorrow. I hope they do find him. In any situation like this the family needs closure. It must be a terrible experience for them not knowing where or in what condition he is. Here is the info for anyone who can help -

Dave Civile has been missing since Wednesday afternoon after taking his kayak out from Little Silver Point Road on the Shrewsbury River. From all the information we've been getting from the authorities his most likely location is in the islands south of the Shrewsbury River bridge.

If anyone is willing to volunteer their time to assist with our serach efforts we will be focusing on Sedge island and the shoreline opposite Sedge island on the Rumson side. There will be teams of family and friends searching these areas starting approximately 8 AM Saturday morning.

Thank you all for your support and concern. Dave is believed to be alive and sheltered in a "cave" on Sedge island.

Im sure there are other things that will come up but a least we have a person to check in and out with, any other sugestions will be considored
    Thanks
"We will be launching tomorrow at 11:30am from the 57 Paag Lane in little Silver NJ at 11:30am "

If anyone can help, go down to the 7 Bridges area, try to pair up with someone else, and ask where they need you.

Thanks for anyone who can give any assistance at all. Feel free to pass this along to any board where you think they can help.

Here is a quote from his sister. It ripped me up to read this. If anyone is even remotely able to help, please think about her words here, and realize they still have hope of finding him alive:

I am David's sister. He is the most incredible & influential person to so many people. He is our family's light & world. He is my only sibling, my brother, my best friend, and my superman. Anything he tries he succeeds & kayaking was his new venture. At 26, he has his "bullet proof" mentality & told my mom that morning when she told him not to do-that he would be fine & would turn around it if it was too rough. HE underestimated his ability & the winds that day. He is natural leader and always for the good. We know that God is keeping him alive & using him to bring people together. There are people praying in all countries for his safe return. PLease anyone who is searching for him today---pray to God that he enters into your heart & mind and leads him to David. God works miracles & we believe he is using David to show the world a miracle. God does not give us things that we cannot handle & my family CANNOT HANDLE THIS. He is our life. We opened the bible last night & it automatically was at proverb 40 which is DAVID. It said God heard David's cry and lifted him from the mud & onto a rock. We have to believe in GOD's MIRACLES. Please don't give up faith & help us find him today. He has too much left to do here on Earth.

Please think about helping, if you can, guys and girls. Thanks.

    Default still searching 11/29

They were still searching for him as of Nov 29. I pray that they at least find his body soon so the family can have some kind of sense in this. Prayers for them too, Extremely sad.

This is what the searcher said --
"Went out this mourning with the Pieman and we concentrated on the channels between the markers where David launched we dragged the bottom with grappling hooks and set up two rods with snag hooks and we crisscrossed the shrewsbury river for about 4 to 5 hrs we covered all the areas in the center of the bay and came up with nothing he is still missing
Also the State police was there covering the area they were going up and down the river
and checking the different creeks in the area.Still missing."

David Civile's Life Celebrated During St. Helen's Service

Trader Joes manager, son of longtime St. Helen's organist, missing after kayaking accident at Shore.
    December 6, 2010

Editor's Note: This tribute was written by the family of David Paul Civile. Civile, a Cranford native, was the manager of the Trader Joes in Westfield and his father is the long time organist at St. Helen's.

Through humorous recollections while fighting back tears, friends and relatives painted a picture of a charismatic young man with a characteristic laugh at a Celebration of Life memorial service for 26-year-old Cranford native David Civile Saturday at St. Helen's Church.

"Next to my husband Jon, Dave is my best friend, my light, my world, and my superman," said sister Laura Davies, who also demonstrated her brother David's signature laugh by throwing back her head with a "ha!" that many family members and friends recognized with a chuckle.

Mr. Civile disappeared during a kayak trip down the Shewsbury River on Nov. 17. Authorities searched for him for four days but turned up nothing. The search for his body continues.

Family members paid tribute to David as they fondly recalled his uniqueness, his positive attitude and the profound effect he had on others through his compassion and sensitivity.

They also poked fun at his nuances and penchant for fine living. He drove a beloved black BMW sports car. With his dad, he watched and laughed heartily at DVDs of their favorite show "Frasier," even lounging around in a leather chair he purchased for his townhouse in Tinton Falls, "an authentic copy of the one Frasier had in his Seattle apartment" remarked his uncle, Robert Civile.

"Authenticity - it's a word that kept coming to my mind as I reminisced about David this week because that aptly describes David," his uncle shared in his tribute.

He steamed lattes for family and friends with his espresso machine that he had set up in his bedroom at his parents' house in Cranford, along with an electric fireplace. David's room was equally as cosmopolitan as the "Frasier" set, cousin Robb Canning recalled. "It was like I stepped into a Starbucks. Rich, deep colors on the wall, with David nonchalantly asking 'can I get you a latte?'"

Employees of Trader Joe's stores from across Passaic, Morris, Union, and Mercer counties attended the service and paid tribute to their colleague and manager. Many wore Hawaiian shirts to show solidarity and respect to a man who both befriended and inspired them.

"Funny", "supportive", "hard-working", "smart", "handsome" were just some of the attributes shared by the Trader Joe's crew as they mingled after the service to share stories and offer each other consolation.

"He was just incredible," said Robin Iosco, a coworker of Civile's at Trader Joe's in Wayne, in a separate interview with Cranford Patch.

David also reveled in nature, according to the tribute paid by his girlfriend Hannah Schranz. She noted how David possessed a deep admiration and appreciation for an autumn day or a full moon.

The couple had recently purchased a 1,000-word jigsaw puzzle, depicting an ocean scene, complete with a sailboat, waves crashing on the shore and a single Adirondack chair. Ms. Schranz imagines he's somewhere similar now. "Sitting in that chair, taking in the ocean breeze," she envisioned to the nearly 1,000 people who had gathered in St. Helen's to pay their respect to a beloved family member and friend. Besides the loving tribute from family members, including the celebrant, Fr. Gene Squeo who was David's cousin, members of St. Helen's worship team provided music personally picked out by the family.

"The song, 'Grown-Up Christmas List' was one of David's favorite at Christmas," explained Fr. Squeo, who also shared a touching re-telling of the "Freddy the Leaf" story and the lesson all could learn from it.

Family members also recalled a compassionate individual that, as a young child, took care of his sick grandfather, expressed a deep-seated faith in God and maintained a close-knit relationship with his family. This faith in God was a recurring theme in the tributes paid by two of David's uncles, Robert and George Civile. "David was not lost," expressed his uncle Robert. "True, we couldn't find him, but Jesus found him."

And David's uncle George focused on the reward of eternal life for those who have placed their trust in Jesus. "David is with the Lord and he wants us all to know that he is okay and is waiting for the day when we all can be together with him," George assured all who listened attentively to his words of hope and comfort.

The most moving moment of the celebration came at the end, from an open letter written by David's mom, Joan Civile. "The joy and love I've shared with you these past 26 years has been, in your own words, amazing," she wrote in a letter to David read aloud at the service.

And no matter what life threw at him, relatives said David stayed positive. "He really had this unique ability to stay happy no matter what he was doing," said Canning, whose theme was about the life lessons that David's life provided.

Born on Oct. 11, 1984 in Muhlenberg Hospital, David Civile grew up in Cranford and graduated high school in 2003. Cranford remained his home for 24 years, until he moved to Tinton Falls in 2008. He received a degree in business management from Kean University, and worked as a Trader Joe's store manager in Wayne, Westfield, Florham Park and Princeton.

Although he passed away, friends and family do agree that, even at such a young age, David had lived his life to the fullest and was a beacon of Christian faith and hope. Canning implored the audience to live by his example.

"You do have a choice on how to live your life," Canning said. "Choose happiness."
