Madcaster I think there might be some regional differences too. I remember watching Bill Dance shows and he usually called it a fishin pole. So it might have something to do with different ways of speaking in the south vs north. Like we call killies up here killies and in south jersey they call them minnows or minnies.

I always use rods to fish; poles are what my mom uses to keep her tomatoes vertical.

A good friend uses old broken rods as poles for his tomatoes.

Here is another way to look at it, let me play devils advocate. 2 guys go out on their boat at night for some sunset fishing. They have been friends for a long time. One captains the boat and the other is the first mate and takes care of all the rigging. As they get to their location, one of them has to maneuver the boat the the other is doing all the setups.

Which of the following conversations would you prefer?
