    The cold shock happens more often than you think. Other rivers as well. I think in this case the temperature differential just overwhelmed them and they had nowhere to go. Tough news these are all future breeders

    Some of the Mass rivers also when the fall is mild and some stripers linger. Then when they want to leave they can't because of the thermocline barrier.
