Rescue crews search the Susquehanna River Saturday for a 61-year-old York County man, who a passing motorist said climbed onto the wall of the north side of the Veterans Memorial Bridge (between Columbia and Wrightsville) and disappeared shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.

Rescue personnel search the Susquehanna River Saturday for a 61-year-old York County man.

West Hempfield Township police said river rescue units and police from York and Lancaster counties searched the river Friday but were unsuccessful. High water levels, a swift current and cold water temperatures hampered their efforts.

Later Friday, officers found a vehicle parked near the York County side of the bridge, containing a possible suicide note left by the victim.

The man's name was withheld pending recovery efforts and notification of his family.

The search will continue today. According to Jason Sauder, assistant chief for West Hempfield Fire and Rescue, crews will search for the body depending on weather and river conditions.
