Default Be careful on the ice.

When I was a kid we lived down the street from a lake and my parents used to take us ice skating during the winter months. I remember my father slowly stepping on the edge of the ice and painstakingly inching his way further and further out to make sure it was safe for us kids.

One year a neighbor took his two kids down to the same lake at the beginning of the season. His son was over excited about it and went running out on the ice. Unfortunately it was not safe and he fell through. With the help of some bystanders the dad was able to get his son out.

I ran across this article on the web and it reminded me of the above.

ATHOL, Mass. (AP) - A mother and her two young children were rescued by firefighters after falling into Lake Ellis while ice fishing.

Lee Chauvette, a former Athol firefighter who lives on the lake, said he had just returned home to pick up something when he saw Sileng Lheureux and the two children go into the water. "I physically saw them when I got back to the top of the driveway...physically fall through the ice and the mother was in the ice up to her neck," said Chauvette.

Chauvette called authorities and stayed close until an ice rescue team arrived and pulled the trio to safety. All three were finally towed to safety, checked out at the hospital and released. home in time for a safe and warm Christmas Eve.

    Reporter: AP

RUSSELL, Kan. (AP) _ One man is dead and another seriously injured during an accident while ice fishing in central Kansas this weekend.

Authorities say Michael Duetsch of Wilson died after he fell through the ice at Lake Wilson late Saturday night and couldn't pull himself out of the water.

Law enforcement from Russell County and Lincoln County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and local divers found the body at 4 a.m. yesterday morning.

The accident was reported by Curt Menzer who had been fishing with Duetsch. He didn't have keys to the car so he walked to nearby Bunker Hill to call for help. He was later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of frostbite to his feet and legs.

I never saw a person go under, but did see them rescue a dog that fell in. We went ice fishing another time when the ice wasn't frozen solid. It started to crack, and we got the heck out of there.

That could have turned out a lot worse. Minutes count in a situation like that. It's a good thing the firefighter saw them.

    Another one...

PLAINSBORO, N.J. (Map, News) - New Jersey authorities say a woman drowned trying to retrieve her grandson's dog from a frozen pond.

Authorities say 61-year-old Janet Howard was walking a German Shepherd named Apollo on Saturday when it wandered onto the ice covering Plainsboro Pond. Police speculate that Howard went after the dog but the ice broke, plunging her and the animal into the water about 25 feet from shore.
A passer-by on a bicycle heard Howard's cries and tried to help her, but he also fell through the ice.
He fought his way back to shore and raced home to call 911. Rescue workers later found Howard about 4 1/2 feet beneath the surface. She was taken to Princeton Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The dog somehow reached the shore and ran home.
