Massey Pierce and his father, Douglas, ended 2008 on a high note Wednesday morning as Massey, 16, caught a 75-pound wahoo.
The Pierces, of Parkland, were trolling on their boat The Mockingbird with Mitch and Carson Crump of Kentucky and Trevor Torres of Parkland. They caught a 4-pound dolphin in 200 feet, then moved in to the reef. The big wahoo hit a rigged ballyhoo in 140 feet just south of Hillsboro Inlet.
"It hit, then kind of hesitated and then it took off," Douglas Pierce said. "Massey got it up to the boat the first time in about 10 minutes, then it took three more runs. After the third run I had to chase it with the boat because I was afraid it was going to spool us."
In all, Massey needed 30 minutes to land the wahoo using a 50-pound outfit. The Pierces weighed the wahoo on a scale at their house and grilled the fish that night for their New Year's Eve dinner.
