Hundreds back fishing jetty fight

Fishermen say landing catches is dangerous without a jetty

A Facebook group has attracted hundreds of people in support of fishermen fighting for a jetty.
The plan for Helford in Cornwall was approved by the local council after fishermen said it would ease their landing of catches.

But it could now to be the subject of a judicial review after opponents lodged a claim for a hearing against the planners' decision.
The Facebook group has attracted more than 1,300 members.
'Vital income'
Kerrier District Council unanimously approved the jetty in January last year, despite opposition from nearly 100 people.

Opponents, some of whom own second homes in the area, fear the picturesque village will be disturbed by the increased activity and a road leading to the jetty.
Some members of a group known as the Helford Village Society have forced a judicial review which will cost thousands of pounds to challenge.
Fishermen say a jetty would mean they do not have to transfer their catches to smaller boats to land it, a practice which they say is dangerous and time-consuming. The Facebook group, called I support the people of Helford who want to build a Jetty's Wall, has 1,370 members. One member, Anne Rowe, wrote: "The fishermen who urgently need this jetty supply some of the finest fish to Cornwall and beyond, bringing vital income into the community and the county as a whole, in addition to providing valued jobs."
