Anglers should note that some stocked mine pit lakes are designated trout lakes and some are not, according to classification by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Different regulations apply to a designated trout lake than to lakes that are not classified that way.

On designated trout lakes:
* Only one line may be used in either summer or winter.
* Possessing live minnows or using them for bait is prohibited. Only dried, frozen or brined minnows are allowed. Live leeches are legal to use.
* A trout stamp is required by anglers from 16 to 64 years old.
* Fishing for any species is allowed only during the open season for trout fishing.
On trout lakes not classified as designated trout lakes, a trout stamp is not required for fishing but is required if an angler wants to keep trout.
The limit on stream trout (rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout and splake) is five combined, and only three may be longer than 16 inches.
