Tragedy at Shrewsbury Rocks

We heard this on the radio today but I don't know exactly when it happened. Found this on Al Ristori's blog on NJ.com.

There was tragedy on the water today around Shrewsbury Rocks as a larger boat ran over a small one -- with one angler dying as a result. We all have to be aware that an accident is only a blink away on the water.

Wow. Reminds me of the incident a few years ago in south jersey. A bigger boat ran over a smaller one. I think the name of the Capt who did the damage was Flowers, from Livingston, and they said he was below deck not paying attention.

I remember that storminsteve. Think the captain was below partying or drinking at the time.

Boats Collide in Atlantic Near Long Branch, Victims Treated for Injuries

At least two injuries result from Atlantic Ocean boating accident

Two recreational boats collided Saturday afternoon in ocean waters near Long Branch, leaving at least two victims with injuries in the wake of the accident.
The United States Coast Guard?s 5^th District Public Affairs Office stated that an 18 foot-long pleasure craft and a 36 foot-long pleasure craft named ?No Surrender? were involved in an accident at about 1:15 p.m. today, colliding in the Atlantic Ocean about a mile and a half south of Long Branch.
?Personnel aboard the No Surrender, a 36 foot-long pleasure craft with four people aboard, contacted Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders informing them of the incident, and that the two people aboard an 18 foot-long pleasure craft sustained injuries,? said Petty Officer Brandyn Hill of the United States Coast Guard?s 5^th District Public Affairs Office.
Passengers of the ?No Surrender? retrieved both men aboard the 18 foot-long craft, and brought them onto the other boat. One man suffered a head injury, and the other was reportedly in shock from the accident. The ?No Surrender? then headed into the Shark River, where they were met and escorted to the United States Coast Guard Station located there by crews aboard a small 25 foot-long Response Boat and a 47 foot-long Motor Life Boat from the station.
The two men with injuries were met by an awaiting ambulance crew, and the person with a head injury was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
?Personnel from the New Jersey State Police are on scene, and the cause of the accident is under investigation,? said Hill.

Hard to believe he ran over an anchored boat 1:30 in the afternoon with 5 mile visiblity and is supposed to be a professional fishing guide.

He had a rep as having a need for speed. There was another forum where the thread was closed because they didn't want to see him criticized. I hope dark would not play that same censorship game here. There is no way you can blame the crew of the smaller boat. They were anchored and not in a channel. There is no where else for the blame to be put except on OLaughlin and Shore Catch. Big money lawsuit coming down the pike for them. Sad to hear when anyone dies but maybe this could have been prevented. rip

"A man from the Colonia section of Woodbridge died after his boat and another boat collided on the ocean off Long Branch, state police said on Monday morning.Eric Kim, 31, died after his boat was struck off Long Branch by "No Surrender," a 38-foot boat piloted by Thomas Oloughlin, 44, of Princeton, on Saturday afternoon, said Sgt. Brian Polite.
Kim's passenger, Soo Lee, 34, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, suffered cuts, but was not seriously injured, Polite said.
Polite said police are not releasing the names of the passengers aboard "No Surrender," but did say that the pilot and passengers were not injured.
Kim may have originally been taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune for head injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The other passenger was reportedly in shock immediately after the accident."

I agree fishingmission. It is still a tragedy but someone has to be held accountable and that guy seems to be the capt OLoughlin.

The last time I checked, the First Amendment Rights in this country still existed. I don't know the Capt...but do know the Shore Catch Guys....
I don't want to stop anyone from expressing their opinions unless the stated comments are slanderous.

Bearing that in mind, this is a terrible tragedy that will affect the lives of all involved for years to come.
Please try to keep it civil, folks, and keep that in mind as well.
My deepest condolences, and thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all who were there that day.






**IMO kayakers need to learn from this as well...there were some kayakers arrogantly claiming they don't need to have flags when out there.,,,,
I know several boaters who have privately griped to me that it is only a matter of time before a similar incident happens with a kayak. Something to think about and learn from.

You're too kind, ds. O'Laughlin had a speeding rep. They advertised the CR fleet as the fastest ride to the canyons. The pic in the article shows the boat on plane in the inlet. All that points to a guy who was a run and gun type of capt. Get there to the bite before anyone else does. Will be hard to defend against that in court. I see major charges coming down the road.
