    Isn't it hard to make plugs out of maple?

    Yes, but what a difference it makes. Gotta have a good sharpening system for lathe tools. I have a Tormek T-7. a little pricey but worth it.
    Also maple is such a smooth closed grain it seems easier and for hand carved shapes there are some great new burrs Kutzal for one
