Small eels have these egg teeth and some small ones ringing around the upper part of their mouths. They can't hurt ya.
Larger eels...it's not really a good idea to put your finger in the mouths of larger eels to get the hook out.
Goog move. How would I know this? :embarassed:

No stitches man, the only wound was realizing the goog factor may never rub off of me. :D I'm cooking that sucker in a marinade, and we peeled off the skin to make eel plugs. Even that I suck at, couldn't do better than taking it off strips at a time. Right now the skin is sitting in brine solution.

Report for 11/7, same area From: Jim Balicki NEW JERSEY
Fished from Noon to dusk. No hits. saw only 1 striper caught. Heard that early AM was OK as sandeels were present. and stripers were caught. In the PM, heard that a few stripers were caught by the clammers. Figures -- since I did not see any sandeels, the few stripers in the area chose to ignore a lure that resembles a sandeel. Instead they found a clam bait on the bottom.
*********************************
^^ This is the report from 11/7 that Jim Balicki wrote on another site. The "1 striper" caught is by Killie. Jim Balicki came into that area after Killie got a few others, but it's fair to say that that afternoon was a tough pick. And the only bass caught at that hotspot for the afternoon bite was by Killie as we fished together. This is a guy that everyone blames their bad luck on, :2flip:  yet he pulled a bass out of the water when other hardcore guys got blanked. :don't know why:
Also, the building S wind and waves were pushin us sideways and almost cut us off at the knees a few times. We took a few headers as we walked out past the breakers so we could reach the pocket better. Great fishin!
WTG on the bass, bro! :clapping:

I got these bass after meeting up with the OFFC and fishing until the sunset. I got 2 before sunset on a mackerel colored magdarter with Monty's teaser. They got a few as well, using mambo minnows.
We were on the outer bar and the tide was coming in. They bailed for safer ground and "gently" reminded me to do the same thing.
I ignored them for a few minutes. :embarassed: Then I realized how good it is sometimes to have a friend worried about your safety, so I went back to shore, looking to find them. By that time they were down the beach, and I lost them in the dark.
I hooked up with a local guy who fishes there. We fished the pocket for 15 mins, and neither got a tap. It seemed the water was dead, but I felt otherwise. I knew those fish were moving through, so I made my way back to the outer bar on the rising tide.
It took me an hour of blind casting to get my first fish. I was almost ready to give up when I put the mackerel magdarter back on. (Coincidentally, that was the first thing I put on when I made my way out there again, and I couldn't buy a hit with it.) :don't know why:
Also knowing that it takes the fish a while to get adjusted to the dark unless there are insane amounts of bait, I felt I needed to be patient and kept casting. My patience was wearing off, until I got the first fish at 7pm.
These weren't huge fish, but they weren't the small 24" schoolies we had been getting either. From 7-9:30pm, even with the moon bright in the sky, I had 15 bass, all aggressive, and slamming that plug.
The bass were nice and chunky. I think 4 of them were around 26", the rest were bigger up to 31". I was in heaven. I wouldn't say I had a fish on every cast, I had to work for them.

An interesting experiment is that I usually put bucktail siwashes on my favorite plugs, removing the treble. Monty sent me some of his hand-tied teasers, and I put them on the magdarters. Since I was fishing in 3 1/2' of water, rising tide, it was a little awkward releasing those fish. One, I tried to snap a camera pic when it was still green, and I ended up breaking off the rear hook as the fish got quick released. I fished that magdarter for the next 10 minutes without a bump. I only got hits when I switched to a spare black magdarter with bucktail siwash.
Lesson? Dress up your plugs with bucktail.

Thanks for sending me those, Monty, at this point I can say they do work. :HappyWave:

My efforts were finally rewarded. In the weeks prior to this, dozens of hours casting from the jetties, inlets, and sand beaches, with only one, two, or no bass to show for it! :burn:
This action was incredible, and I wasn't leaving until it was over! :dribble: The great thing to me was that I didn't really know that area in the dark. I wasn't in a pocket, I was merely on the front side of the bar, and the fish were moving through.
I was so happy I was muttering to myself. If ya ever met Dewayne from NoMoCo, you know that mumbling and muttering i'm talkin about. :kooky:I was a babbling idiot, in the middle of pods and pods of bass. They weren't actively feeding, there was no evidence they were there, other than they were Smashing the frikkkin plug! It was so addictive to have bass come right out of the water 5 or 10' from me. It was an insane adrenalin high.
8191
8192
8193
If you've been there, you know the feeling. If you haven't, it's hard to explain why some crazy fisherman would be out on a sandbar in pitch darkness (only had light the last 1/2 hour after the moon was out) 75' from shore on an incoming tide.
I knew the rising tide would present a problem when I came back, but I didn't care. I was so into the action, I had to take a leak, I told myself if the action kept up, I would just have to accept being wet all over.
Gradually, the action slowed. I landed 15 bass, lost one that doubled my rod over. It wasn't as great as some other guys had who were out the night before, but it was the best action I had in a long time. It was so addictive I'm still playin that tape in my head.
I also felt a little bad for some of the fishermen who gave up early because of "the full moon effect". I saw groups of them walking by on the beach as I was into the fish. A few times I opened the bail and let the fish run, because they stopped and were watching. I hadn't had real action like that in so long, I didn't want anything or anyone to jeopardize it or spook the fish.
It was truly a night to remember. No big fish were caught, but the action was fantastic. I'm glad I was out, and persisted in my belief that the fish were there.

Finchaser met me on the beach in the middle of the day Friday. He sold me the sweetest surf bag in the world after he felt sorry for me, lookin at mine that had duct tape on it. :HappyWave:
Just because we were there, we decided to make a few casts. I'd like to make everyone aware that all the guys had left the beach from the previous action because the action had "died". There were about 3 fishermen left plugging that beach, and they weren't doing squat!
Fin comes along, and on his first frikkin cast this emmeffer is into a bass! :2flip: ;) :clapping::clapping:
8194
In the next hour, he managed 2 bluefish, while all the others, including me, came up empty handed. :embarassed:
He's got magic hands, I tell ya!! A lot of guys think if they have "this" plug, or "that" rod or reel, they will slay the fish. Fin's so good he could probably catch fish on a Spongebob squarepants rod. Sometimes it ain't the equipment, or the plug, it's the fisherman.
It was an honor to fish with this guy. 50 years of fishin experience, he makes catching fish look like it's a breeze, even in the toughest conditions. The next time you read the report of the numbers he puts up, don't kid yourself, it ain't easy, he just makes it look like it is.

Monty, I haven't had action like that, with double digit fish, in quite some time. It's like you take a man who's been starving in the desert, and tell him he can eat all the chocolate cake he wants for 3 hours. :dribble: I'm still playing the tape of that in my head, over and over... Thanks again for the teasers, they work great!

Earlier that day, one of the OFFC also nailed a 17lb bluefish.
17 frikkin pounds? :bigeyes::viking::drool:
That's a certified gorilla or T-Rex bluefish. I didn't get any close to even 15# this year, I was real disappointed with the big bluefish surf action. That day, these guys put up a report "well we managed a few bass and blues in OC"
Way to minimize a report guys!
Congrats to Yardville and the rest of the OFFC. :HappyWave:

Sorry to hear about your camera, that sucks. I can highly recommend the Pentax optioW60. I'm tough on everything I own. I love that camera, waterproof to around 10', and you can pick one up online for around $220, even including the price of extra batteries.

^ No problem, bro, I just thought if anyone could figure out a way to make an animated shark that gives fishin reports and makes fun of people at the same time it would be you. "Eat your vegetables" is a generic statement, any kid who grows up with parents who care is gonna hear that one. ;) :HappyWave: I probably ate or smoked paint chips as well growing up.
As for the WWW videos, I borrow funny ideas from people all the time for those. It reflects any funny stories going on in my life at the time. Finchaser told me the joke about yesterday's fish, and I told him I was stealin it to use in the videos. (thanks Fin) All good. :lookhappy:

Voyager, the 2nd shot in the series was candid. Then I went up to them and asked if I could take more shots, so in the 5th one they knew I was taking pics. I find for me, candid shots are much more natural. Who wants to see someone posing? I just take out the camera and try to capture the moment, and I think posing takes away from that.
Plus, every time someone tries to take a pic of me looking at the camera, I end up with my eyes closed, stupid smile :bucktooth: or some other goofy thing. :D
I forgot their names, usually I write them down. If they see this and want the larger Jpgs, I have them, just e-mail me and I'll send them out to them.
Hope they did get some fish, the kid was maybe 8 or 9, pretty cool to be out there surf fishin with Dad.

Nice pics monty. Is the first one a broken jetty or a random rock pile?
Monty
01-03-2010, 08:55 PM
Its a broken Jetty, the pile is a good 5-7 feet above the rest of the rocks. Most of the other rocks were under sand until these storms came through late fall.

The rock pile i'm talking about was good before the first noreaster in Oct. water was deeper. Now a bomber drags bottom near top of the cast which would be off the side of the rock pile. I hope that area get back to how it use to be.:(

This is what happens when you bring your light rod to a blue fish blitz ..you stand there hanging on for 5 min. I thought they would be cocktail blues ...turn out to be big gator 12lb +ones. I lost count of how many fish we brought in. My shoulder was wearing out so I took some video pic’s. The back ground has been modified not to burn the spot.

Nice pics Madcaster, looks like you and Gotfish had a blast. I think people have romanticized what's it like to fight a big striped bass, as far as how they tell the story afterwards. For a big bass, it's (usually) 2 runs and they're done, unless you're fighting them in a current or are undergunned with your tackle.
I would rather hear a story about fighting monster bluefish. If you gave me a choice of 30# bass or targeting bluefish near the 15# class, I would take the bluefish every time. Big bluefish never seem to get tired of pulling drag, to me that's highly addictive. :dribble:
But hey, that's just me, we're all entitled to our preferences. :don't know why:
Thanks for sharing those great pics.

When the season opened up to a higher limit there were a lot of nice fish caught on the rocks. Here's a keeper caught by a new friend I made from LI who retired to NJ. He outfished every other guy on the dock that day, WTG. :clapping:

That is definitely a nice keeper blackfish from a dock. When I have been down to the jetties they usually seem a lot smaller witha lot of bergalls mixed in.

Last one for now.....
Brian is a friend and hardcore bait guy, fishes SI as soon as the season opens. He and Antero are out there fishin almost every night. They got some nice bass this year. I lost most of the pics they sent, but here is something memorable, one where his son Brandon out-caught Dad Brian that night.
Striped bass fishin from the surf is not an ideal fishery to introduce kids to, as the bass at night are sometimes few and far between. Brian is one of those unselfish guys who takes his son fishin with him every chance he gets.
Good times, good fishin, Dad and Son. :clapping::thumbsup: :fishing:
Here's one of Brandon the night he schooled his Dad. WTG both of ya's!

Some of the best fishing in NJ is off the water discharge pipes of moco and occo. It's not exactly sewage, but some in the know have admitted that during extreme storms there is an overflow at some of the town treatment plants, and the excess gets washed in the ocean via those storm sewer pipes. Word from a few surf rat friends of mine is that during those times the fishing can be fantastic near those pipes. They call bass the saltwater carp, they eat junk and crap off the bottom, so why not actual crap,it probably has a strong scent in the water.:ROFLMAO

Some folks did well last night. and some even better than this....
Truthfully, it seemed to be slower than usual in a lot of popular places...Even the tide stage reported to me where the fish were the most active, was different than it had been....The shifting winds and weather pattern probably had something to do with that.....
Posted with permission....
14970
I also got feedback that there were a lot of skinny fish in the mix...which to me, could indicate a fresh pod of fish coming in...
Remember, folks, the fish you caught yesterday are not the same fish you see today. The Hudson warms and the schools of herring start their migration coinciding with bass migration. Bass will follow herring as they move around the bays and through the Arthur Kill and NY Bight into the Hudson..
The concentration of bass in their usual upriver Hudson haunts is not that great now, according to friends who have been fishing there....which means that those fishing the bay and ocean areas near the Hudson, now have a tremendous opportunity....
A few friends saw small herring in the mix last night, and have spotted them previously within the past 2 weeks...good news for folks who want to throw artificials....

Great pics fellas. I would have thought that bass in #227 was 20lbs too. No?
DarkSkies
03-26-2012, 12:32 PM
^^ Bababooey and Stripermania, that could have been a 20...
but it wasn't officially weighed, and was reported to me via pic,,,I didn't see it in person....
When weighing or estimating fish, I'll tend to underestimate the weight on purpose as I'm not using a boga....
that way I don't have critics 2nd guessing me..I don't need the hassles....
So if I report I got an 18 or 19, or a high teen fish...it could have been 20, to me it's not a big deal, as most of mine go back anyway....
Y'all can be assured that when I get a 50....
that fish will be weighed and measured very carefully, before I call it a 50....;) :fishing:

I can't wait till April 15. We get the rats first, how are you guys getting all those bigguns?
Rockhopper, here is the secret, but don't tell anyone...(shhhhhh!)
All the guys who have gotten fish 15# and above are going down to Finchaser's house before they fish at night....
They ask for his blessing,
he does the angry italian man dance :lynchmob: as he prays to King Calamari :kooky:
He then jumps up and down on one foot, says some curse words in Italian, and then spits on their bait. :upck:
Most of the guys, if they go fishing that night, will get a fish weighing 15# or better....
There's only one catch, Fin has been asking them to release the biggest ones....
and if they don't...
He put an old school curse out there that the ones who don't, get explosive, painful diarrhea for 48 hours....and after 48 hours they are back to normal.....
That will all be included in his Spring Seminar....no extra charge....:d
**PS - If ya really want to come and fish NJ, just PM and I'll try to help ya out...:HappyWave:

I bet it would be off the charts. Haven't had a chance to meet some of you folks yet but if there was a show I bet it would be popping with energy and zany antics. Question, does finchaser have a booming voice when he yells or is he more like the soft threatening voice of Marlon Brando?
