Howdy folks,
My Main Man Monty and I came up with the idea to put up pix of years gone by,,gear we used, bucktails, plugs, reels and other tidbits that were the normal gear used by most from those years ago.
Monty will be posting both of our shots asap.
I would like to see shots of your old gear just so the younguns here can see stuff they may have only heard about and to compare whats happening now.
keep your eyes peeled as the pix will be put up asap!

Here's 5 from R-P
1- Port side, old rebel which has caught many a schoolie, when only
schooies were around.[early 80's]
2-Top-old mackeral pattern rebel[sinker] which has also caught MANY
schoolies,we found that sinking rebels casted almost 2wice as far as
floaters hence others wondered why we fished them.[80's]
3-2nd + 3rd,small bombers blasted onto the scene,loved them,tossed them
around bridge abutments and such with great results.
4-4th is a 71 creek chub pikie? it has glass eyes and I love the
color, metallic mint green with gold face, caught a few small bass with
it.
5-Starboard side, another old sinking rebel, many on that one as well.

Bicycle George looks like he has worlds of experience. Do you have any stories to share about him?
Rip-Plugger
06-03-2009, 06:26 PM
BG and I go waaay back, back to about 1985 I think.
He really didn't sling swimmers with us much.
he was more of a wader and popper slinger than ANYONE at that time.
he got me into wading AAMOF,I have waded with him many times and always had fun with him.
I tell ya,this 70 year old can sling a 2 oz popper so far that you'd think it snapped off and just vanished.
this man would put many of us to shame with his casting ability,he beats me and I ain't no slouch.
anyhooo,I am happy to know him as he is not a jerk that will not help you land a fish.he will share spots that hold fish and things that work.

The stories of the old salts will always live on as their legacy. Many consider themselves great fisherman but I think it takes years and years to build a reputation and become 1st rate. RP it's great that you were able to go and learn things from what seems to be one of the best out there.

yeah plug,
I sure miss those days,it was great hanging out with the older guys and buying atom swimmers, dannys and such, that was the highlight of everyday.
most of those guys are gone now,Ernie the fly, sam[bite on my line]D'Urso, blue eyed Tony, waterbury Tony,4:30 Joe,Art [King Arthur] King,Danny the rod breaker,Tony "he's not ona yet"Vuolo, sherman "Crazy Rebel" McGilton and more.
They really were great folks and no one fought at all.
still in all there are some that still fish and fish with them today,Malibu Kenny,Tommy "get me some tyres" Pirelli,No *** eddie,Cadillac Joe,Bicycle George,Tony Ohhh and the guy whos' like my brother Big Steve Franco, those guys are still great folks.

oh yeah, used to go into reservoirs armed with musky jitterbugs to catch only the biggest bass, worked great as I always got one 5 pounds or more.
I once caught a 21 inch Calico bass on one, that thing was a monster.
I also caught an 18 inch yellow perch on one too.
can't beat them for night topwater action.

A 21", calico, at least 4lbs or close?
18" yellow perch had to be close to that also, those are some very big freshwater fish you're talking about. :wow:

I lived in a lake (big pond) development. Had a great time fishing for perch and large mouth. Rubber worms, those jitter bugs. I remember my father catching a big bass on a jitter bug when I was about 9 or 10. Getting up early with him, trps to Wawayanda and swartswood. They were the glory days for sure.

oh yeah,every bit of that.
both came from Lake Saltonstall in branford/east haven Ct.
it is open to fishing now but when those fish were caught was years before that.
ya know, sometimes we would catch calicoes on spinnerbaits at night too and they were 17-18 inches on a regular basis.that was one of the reasons we switched to the musky jitterbugs was to keep them off it.
funny thing was most of the largest bass were just 5 pounds, some more but I know there has to be 10 pounders there.
funny,,,,

it was september, late september 1981,tide was ebbing just 1 hour.
1-am,cool temps,perhaps nearbout 55 degrees.
a southeast wind was raging about 20 knots steady, gusting up to 40 at times.
Dark cloud[me],Malibu Kenny,Big Steve Franco, his brother mike and perhaps 2 others were ther as well.
there we stood on the west shore of New Haven Harbor[wyatt oil company],the rocks are sort of large there, several oil storage tanks are behind us.the water level is right at our feet.
we are facing dead east with waves entering the harbor at near dead south, tide is bucking the wind .
the waves are more like swells at near 5 feet, unheard of around here.
there we stand like warriors ready to attack, waiting for battle to begin.
we are all drooling, breathing heavy, aching to begin.
wedged in the rocks in front of me stands a custon 8 foot white lamiglass fiberglass rod[magnum series] built from a heavy,9 or 11 foot blank cut down.
on my line,a 3 foot wire leader 3 feet long with black nylon coating and big daddy mackeal goo-goo eyes swimmer.
most of the others have similar sticks but they are all honey lamis.
on my stick is taped a daiwa gold series GS-3 full of JT 25 pound mono[florescent blue/white].most others are using ande.
Malibu Kenny has an 8 footer with a daiwa Gold series GS-6 taped on,Big steve Franco has a 7 footer with a Gold series GS-20 on it,his brother Mike Franco has an 9 footer with a daiwa silver series 4000-C taped on.
we stand silent, then begin to chatter.
Big Steve decides to sling out his L.Cooper goo-goo eyes Hustler out into the swells.
after about 20 seconds he gets hammered by a chopper that looks like a submarine with teeth.
as you retrieve your plug,it would go up and waay down, crazy.
the chatter stops and that is replaced by screeching drags and big splashes.
I pick up my stick, sling out a mackeral big dady goo-goo eyes swimmer and get slammed hard,I lean back on it and it takes line.
as I handle my fish I look at the others we are all into a fish.
I grab my leader and slide the fish up,it has only the front hook in it's mouth.
I grab the tail and unhook it,then it's released.
this fish is around 16 pounds.
I tell you,it was true carnage and we all were bashing them.fish after fish was landed and we kept on going.
lines began to snap sounding like 32 slugs going of on a saturday night.
I stopped, cut off about 20 feet of line and retied.slung out a big daddy rudolph plug and BAM,I was into a very heavy fish,it dove, thrashed, took line and I finally land it.
this chopper was HUGE,nearly 44 inches, light green top with very silver sides, maybe it was an albino or something.Big Steve gave them the nic"Cape Cod Runners"
more than several of these odd looking choppers were caught and all were big.
Steves brother mike got 2 of them like that.
as I stated before, there were 2 other guys there but I don't remember who they were.
one of them got one too,it was 46 inches and later found to be 25 pounds.
at the same time I find that mine was 22-1/2 pounds.
3 hours of action that was never duplicated, bad weather, crappy wind and no bunkers around that we could see and the choppers moved in and stacked up there.
that spot was and still holds fish at times but access is now tough unless you want to get dirty.
an interesting discovery was when I dressed my fish[I only kept that one] it had several tommy cod inside along with 2 front halfs of nice sized flounder.
I must tell you, that night was one to remember, noting like it has happened since.
SO,between all of us the total caught was 63 fish.
my take was 14 in that 3 hours.
what a grand time we had,so many fish and extreme action,,,I doubt I could do that today,,,,,
It is great sharing, remembering and I am happy to have a place to do so.
stay well and remember,,keep your drag tight!

Sometimes our best memories dont have to include larger than life or colorful characters. I have very few early memories of fishin with my Dad because he was always too busy or he got seasick. The ones I have are later in life when I took him fishin, instead of him takin me.
But these are all priceless, including the memories you have of your Dad, Monty. Whey they're gone, that's all we have left of them.

Hi Jigfreak,
yeah, that one knew hand to hand combat, some WW-E tactics worked on him.
I have not seen the schools of adult herring for a few weeks now but,I have seen schools of 4 inch bait that look like p-nuts but they don't have the yellow tail so,I am not sure what they are.
they have black tails and look like herring, plain black, silver.hordes of them.

man,I wish you all could have seen this battle, heavy current, fish kept diggin and MK was huffing/puffing like an old steam train.12 minutes of hard fighting is what he got.
I stopped fishing to watch him get beat up.it was a great fight, taking line against a tight drag and straining muscles,,,wow,it beat him up.
I put the lipper on it and I could not lift it all the way up,I handed the lipper to him as I was on my knees and laying over the edge,it's a 2 foot drop to the water.
I gave the fish 35+ but,who knows,it swam away after a few minutes and we were happy.
I had more fun watching him get beat up than me catching it.

Hi Madcaster,,the boone trolling lure swims just like a giant rattletrap,it is about 4 oz and casts a mile like a bullet.
I had great success fishing with that one.back then huge gators were the only game around and they would actually stop you from cranking your reel and yank your rod down.

she was slinging a capt bills atom jr in bunker color, watching her fight with the fish was great!

the bass/gators are on adult bunker,herring,5 inch bunkers and gizzard shad, which are from this springs spawn.
fish are picky and I believe it's because they are well fed.

oh man,who you telling?,,,they are simply motivated by demons or something.
most are during darkness but, some are in the very early light.
I have been fishing with plugs on the larger size, they seem to get their attention much more so than say a bomber or such.
they are around and seem to be spread out so,anywhere I fish i sling big wood to alert them to my offering,,,it's been working well.
as for the ruber,i am using the largest i have and can find in my parts.6-9 inches.

11-10-2012, 03:07 PM
yes they are M8,they are eating up well, good to see them bigones around again, have not seen them in a very long time.
they are not afraid of my big wood either,,,maybe they are packing?,,,,,
they are not gone though, they are still getting some on chunks but, they are not bashing on top anymore,my guess is the water is below their comfort zone but, they are lingering because there are some bunkers, herring and baby gizzard shad still around.
I don't doubt they will take slim plug subsurface.
some years ago we did catch them on thanksgiving day night with bombers fished over these 2 humps in shallow water I know of well, they would hit soft and fight softer than normal.
I remember the water being cold and they were still there.
we even took along some wooden fence pickets to make a fire to stay warm and the fish would be there at the first half of the tides ebb.
some folks woud look at us like we were crazy when we were heading back to our cars and saw us with a big gator each,,,the many others caught those nights were released.

Hi CT,well what I saw them bashing were herring about 5-7 inches long.there was a good amount of them too.

I'm coming up there this Spring Roddy....Spent 4 hours fishing last night in brutal conditions..managed 3 fish....
5 hours the night before, 7 stops, only one fish to show for it.
I was thinking of the conditions and opportunities that you guys have, and all the dead water we have down here......it has been real tough for me to catch from land so far since the season opened. I know I haven't had the time to put the usual effort into it but if you want fish on artificials the opportunities have been limited where I fish....
The spawning areas aren't that much better, lots of grumbling from guys who normally catch large bass every year. I keep telling folks there are less bass but few seem to want to listen.....:learn:
With that said, congrats on you getting there out and catching...don't be surprised if ya look over your shoulder and see me...(or smell me first).... :HappyWave:

I would think you guys have the same thing down there with your large backwater areas.I wonder why the fish don't stay in the back spots.the thames river for example has ten tons of bass in the dead of winter the only thing I can think of as to why is because they were/are born there?.I also believe that open beaches don'thold fish because of the vast open/shallow space.fish simply move through and do the same thing on the opposite tide. one catches them whilst they are moving back/forth. find structure and shallow water offshore or even inshore with deeper water close by and you will find fish.I dunno,it could even be a toss-up.R-P

Roddy, things have gotten a lil better since I posted that....;)
Maybe I was just feeling a little sorry for myself....with the Drag Island and other involvements, it's been tough for me to get started this season.
Never used to be this hard for me to catch fish....and I'm probably crabby that as the fish numbers seem to be dwindling in our area, less people seem to care, about this reality, and the access issues that we should be fighting for........
I'm in a better frame of mind after last night...
May still come up there one night soon....
Before I die, I have to finally meet this icon of CT salt water fishing, by the name of Heavy Hooksetter....ever heard of the guy?.... :HappyWave:

well Dark,it's all a game and sometimes you win, sometimes you don't.I know you are aware of that fact,I think that's why we love doing it so much.it is good to see you are in better spirits now and that's a good thing. I remember when there were no stripers that we saw at all. there were only very large gators and fluke in our area.the only striper I saw back then was on a an atom swimmer package and it was not until 1984 that we started catching schoolies on sandworms by accident.one night under the bridge next to shiners cove one april night for tommy cod and we were getting them good too up to a foot long.my heavy duty LMB rod doubled over and I hooked the fish and it was a good fight.when I saw it I freaked out.stripers are in town! after that,it was a big quest that continues to this day.myself and our click were catching them by the hundreds and the size limit was 16 inches.it was a wonderful thing.after that every year the sizes became bigger and we had to upgrade our gear to land them.from then till now,I am looking to hook that monster, the one that will be over the top! ripplugger you do a great job withi thread but there are a lot of us catching fish. Just look in the nj fishing forum. I don't post pics of my fish because if I catch a small fish I'm not impressed, why would you be?
As for bigger fish too much trouble to edit out the details.
Lately ds has been posting pics of pieces of the fish or just the heads. Sadly it seems that is what is has come to you need to edit out every freaking detail so the lurkers won't come running.
Must be way different up where you fish. Having all those rivers close by would be paradise to me.
Good luck and thanks for sharing, brother.:fishing:

ya know what Hookset,I think it is the area I am in.most guys around here would never pay 15 dollars for a plug and most are chunk slingers.i believe you are right in the fact that guys here[locally]are not real fishermen, they go fishing to take home something,I don't.i do take a fish every now/then but, that's all.sometimes one has to almost fight if you release a fish, they want it so I tell them give me 10 bucks and you take it.they decline after that. I fish in the night so,I am almost always alone, one can hear the pops better that way. R-P

they are feeding on bunkers and atlantics now, they seem to be very nomadic as they are here then they are 4 miles away then they show up 2 days later.i hit them just perfect and was in the right spots.

believe it or not,I got the plug out and the fish swam away fast/strong.
the center hooks treble had only one of it's 3 in the back of the roof of it's mouth, the single 5/0 tail hook was through the throat tissue where it looks like an accordion.
I took my very long nosed pliers and it all worked out which was a good thing,I didn't want to kill the fish, hope it made out ok.

I have to say some of those bluefish are impressive. It looks like you are catching them in the day too? Could I ask if it's a dawn/dusk thing or do you catch them at other times? In Jersey whenever we get a bluefish bite it never seems to last that long maybe 30 minutes to an hour. Awesome fish thanks for sharing.
Rip-Plugger
09-08-2014, 11:57 PM
well, around here in the rivers at least they seem to be triggered to the bite by the transition from dark to light.
this action day started at around 6:15 am,then it opened up a bit later when it got lighter out,it was a very overcast day that day.
it was a good am that day,the next morning I only got 1 fish and had several smashes.
